    English is spoken by about 400 million people in Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. In India and Singapore, English is used as a working language. In China and many other countries, it's the most important foreign language that children learn at school, because when they grow up, it will be quite possible for them to meet people from other countries. They will need a common language to communicate with each other. English is now used by about a quarter of the world's population, and wherever you go in the world, there is a good chance that you will meet someone who speaks English.

    The reason why English is spoken everywhere is that in 19th century, the UK sold its industrial products all over the world. And in the 20th century, the US spread English to the world through newspapers, television and films. It is now the common language for international travel, science, industry, and recently, information, technology and the Internet.

    English has borrowed many words from other languages. For example, "restaurant" from French, "zero" from Arabic, "piano" from Italian, and "tofu" from Chinese.

    Will the importance of English last? As China continues to grow, many people think that Chinese will become as common as English by the middle of the 2lth century. More and more schools in Europe are teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Chinese may be the next world language in the future.

    So who owns English? The answer is everyone who speaks it — the British, the Indians and the Chinese all help make it a rich language. It changes every year with new words and expressions.

    Even though there are differences in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling, we all belong to the international English speaking world.

    Every year, more than nine million people all over the world come to visit London. They go to the museums and theatres; they look at interesting old buildings or have a drink in a park.

    A quick and easy way to get to different places in the city is to take an underground train. The London underground is one of the best and most widely used transport networks(网状组织)in the world. The trains run all day and most of the night. (3)You'd better not take the underground between eight o'clock and ten o'clock in the morning, or four o'clock and six o'clock in the afternoon. (4) The trains are so crowded that you can hardly move or find a place to sit.

    London's famous red buses form a big part of getting around in London. Although the London underground is the fastest and the simplest way of getting around London, the buses play their part and are an experience you should try at least once. By sitting on the top deck (层) of the bus, you can get a great sightseeing (观光的)  experience of London as well.

    Some special visitors' buses take you to many of the interesting places in the city on one journey.  It takes about one and a half hours, but you can cancel your journey and get off (and on again) at the different places you want to visit.

    London taxis are called "black cabs”. Most of them are black, but some are not. You can stop one if it has a "For Hire (供租用的)n sign on it. The drivers are friendly and helpful.

    In a word, London is a big and beautiful city with Lots to see and to do. Welcome to London.

根据短文内容,完成下列小题。

    On 19th September 1783, Pilatre De Rozier, a scientist, sent the first hot air balloon. The passengers were three animals and the balloon stayed in the air for about 15 minutes before hitting back to the ground.

    The first manned(载人的) flight was about 2 months later, with a balloon made by 2 French brothers. The balloon flew for a period of 20 minutes.

    Sailing through the sky in the balloon, high above buildings and trees, you can't feel or hear the wind because you're traveling in the same direction and at the same speed as it is.

    A hot air balloon has three main parts: the balloon, called an envelope; a basket, where passengers ride; and a burner system, which supplies the hot air.

    Most balloon envelopes are made of strong, lightweight nylon(尼龙). They are different in size and shape, but they have to be really, really big to lift even one person. Most weigh more than an adult man.

    The basket is usually made of wicker(柳条), which is strong but not too hard. It needs to bend a bit for a soft landing, just like a good jumper bends her legs instead of keeping them straight when she lands.

    The hot air balloon works on the theory that hot air rises faster than cooler air. When the burner system is turned on, it makes a noisy sound, but once the balloon is flying, the burner can be turned off. The air in the envelope will then cool, and the balloon will slowly go down unless the pilot starts the burner system again.

    To control a hot air balloon, a pilot adds hot air to it to go up or lets the air out to go down until he finds a wind blowing in the direction he wants to fly. But no matter which way the wind blows, the passengers have an amazing bird's-eye view of the world.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入文中横线上的最佳选项,所给选项有一项为多余选项。

    One would think that campers would know not to break the branches off trees for firewood, drive fast around the campground, litter, or leave a fire not looked after, but I've seen people do all of these things. No matter where you put up your tent, here are five things not to do at a campground.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    What's it like to be near someone who decides to arrive late at night? Last summer, on a rainy night at a state park in Vermont, we heard noises from excited kids and barking dogs very close to our tent after midnight. There is no beautiful way to set up camp in the middle of the night, so please, just don't do it.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    No one thinks that his dog is annoying, but we all know that some pets are better off left home. The only thing worse than a camper who stands by lazily as his dog barks at passers-by for no reason at all, is that he leaves his dog at his campsite while he goes off for the night.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    This is the most important and often unnoticed camping manner in the book. Nearly every campground has rules that do not allow noise late at night and early in the morning, but most places also don't have the staff to carry them out.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    You might accept leaving your bar of soap thinking that someone might have forgotten to bring theirs, but I can assure you that non one wants to use your leftover soap especially if it's hairy, so please take it with you.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    No matter how good your taste in music is, I'd say most people prefer quiet hours with the nature. The truth is that no one want to hear your music except for yourself. Headphones are a great invention, but since too many campers fail to pack them, don't forget your earlugs.

A. Bring a noisy dog.

B. Check in late at night.

C. Fail to bring your soap

D. Push quiet hours rules aside

E. Leave behind your used soap

F. Take sound equipment with you
