Terry wants to make friends with the most popular girl in his class because everyone else likes her.

Max talks to a girl in his class on Monday, but on Tuesday he's afraid to say "Hi".

When Pedro feels uncomfortable talking to someone, he starts to look away.

Julia often asks herself, "Why do I have so few friends?"

Carl is never sure what to talk about when he meets people.

Ways to make friends

A

Look at people in the eye when you talk to them. That way, they'll find it easier to talk to you. It's very difficult to have a conversation with people whose eyes are looking to the left, to the right, at the floor—anywhere but the other person's face.

B

Have confidence in yourself. Think of your good qualities(素 质 ). People are attracted to those with self-confidence.

C

Try to make friends with the kind of people you really like, respect, and admire(钦佩)—not just with those who are easy to meet. Be friendly with a lot of people. That way, you'll have a bigger group of people to choose from and have greater chances for making friends.

D

Plan things to talk about with people. Find out what's in the newspaper headlines, listen to the top CDs, learn about what's new with your favorite TV or movie star. The more you have to say, the more people will be interested in having a conversation with you.

E

Once you start to get to know someone, don't be friendly one day and then too shy to talk the next day. Be consistent ( 前后一致的). Consistency is something people look for in friends.

F

You should not be too confident. If so, sometimes you might annoy people. You should enjoy the company of other people so that they would like to come to you when they want advice.

What do we really mean by being open? Being open is a kind of invitation to others to come in, to speak and to share. It is important to let others get to know what we think and how we feel. In this way we will be understood and accepted by others. If we aren't open with others, we won't fully believe in ourselves or others.

Here are a few ways for you to be more open. First, make your outside behavior the same with your inside feelings and thoughts. Second, share how you really feel about something instead of just opinions. Third, try to change your questions into statements(陈述句) and talk in the first person so that people will understand you more easily. For example, you might say, "I feel happy that you're here." instead of "Are you glad that you're here?" Finally, try not to say, "I don't know." This usually means I don't want to think about it any more.

Remember also that it is not suitable to be open with everyone in every situation. You may want to be more open with close friends, but not with people you don't know well, because you are not sure how someone else will use what they know about you. Besides, some people may not be used to too much openness. If we say everything we feel or think to them, they will feel every uncomfortable at times.

In all, being open is a good way for us to get on well with other people, but we'd better keep the balance between being open and not being too open.

Do you have a tail? Of course not, we know. But tails are like opinions, actually, everyone has them: fishes, birds, most reptiles, and even some of our closest relatives

Since tails first evolved(进化) at least 500 million years ago. Geckos (壁虎)use them to store fat. birds use them to steer through the air, But for most mammals (哺乳动物).{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Yet, as you get closer to humans on the evolutionary tree, tails disappear, Gorillas(大猩猩)don' t have them, and neither do chimps(黑猩猩) or any other apes (类人猿) including us, of course, To understand why, take a look at how we walk.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}walking like this gives us a huge advantage because unlike four﹣legged animals. which have to pour energy into every step they take, two legs take advantage of gravity(重力),which does some of the work for us. You see, each time we take a step, gravity pulls us forward. The end result is that when we walk, we use around 25% less energy than walking on all fours, and this way of getting around also totally eliminate (淘汰) the need for a tail.

It's said that you can still see a reminder of a time when our ancient ancestors had one. Just look at a human spine(脊椎).{#blank#}3{#/blank#}That's your tailbone. It's all that's the rest of our tail.

    Now, babies are born with what looks like a tail, but that's not what's really going on. Most often, these tails are actually a parasitic twin(寄生虫). These types of tails usually form as a birth defect(瑕疵).{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

So the tail of humans has gone, it's the result of evolution millions of years Will humans be much taller, stronger or smarter in the future?

A. Nowadays, humans can walk completely upright.

B. And in these situations, doctors will advise to remove the tails with no harm to the babies

C. they serve one major purpose—balance.

D. You can see how the last few bones are partly fused(融合) together
