I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world. Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she would say again, “it's for Elizabeth.” I never saw her be angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me—she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface(表面)”. As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive(原谅) me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came. My hope turned to disappointment(失望), then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not. Now the present of her desk told, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(折叠) and refolded many times. Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

My Plan for the Weekend

It was in fall. A woman was sick. She stayed in the hospital by {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(she). She had no daughters or sons. Her husband died ten years ago. So nobody cared {#blank#}2{#/blank#} her. She felt very {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(alone). There was a tree outside her room. She saw the leaves fall down. Day after day, there were fewer and fewer leaves on the tree. The woman was very sad. She didn't want to eat {#blank#}4{#/blank#} drink. She became {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(bad) day by day. She got a strong {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(feel) of death. One day she said, "When the last leaf falls down, I {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(die)."

When {#blank#}8{#/blank#}old artist heard of that, he came up with a good idea. He {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(volunteer) to paint a green and yellow leaf and put it in the tree when all yellow leaves fell down on a cold night. The next morning, when the woman looked out of the window, she found the last leaf was still there. The woman was so surprised that she decided {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(live) strongly like the leaf. From then on, she little by little got better.

My name is Eric and I am a ninth grader now. When I was in Grade 8, I met one of my classmates, Susan, one day. I greeted her "Hello" at once. However, she didn't answer me and still went on her way. I ran and caught her, "Hello, Susan." But she looked very surprised. Just then, a girl who looked similar to her came over to me, "Hello, Eric." I realized I made a mistake and knew she was Sally. They looked the same a lot.

I'm Linda and I'm about 1.71m tall. When my mother took me to the zoo at my seventh grade, she forgot to buy a ticket for me. As a result, the doorkeeper certainly didn't allow me to get in. Till then, Mom realized my height was so high that I should buy a ticket. In her memory, I'm still a little girl. After that, Mom often laughs, "My little daughter isn't little."

I'm Helen and I like drawing very much. Last year, while I was drawing a bird in a tree in a mountain, my cousin Maria came. She wanted to make fun of me and drew away the bird in the tree. When she ran to the tree, she realized it's not a real tree. It's a picture of mine. Till now, I often laugh with her when we think of it. She says I'm so good at drawing.

Old Mother Wind was talking with the tall tree in the forest, "I've just passed by the grass, and there I saw the best thing in the world. "

Bobby Mouse happened to sit under the tree and heard those 1 . " The best thing in the world—What can that be?" he 2 . "Well, it must be plenty of delicious nuts! I'll go and find it. " Then Bobby Mouse ran 3 the grass. He was running so 4 that he didn't see Peter Rabbit until Peter Rabbit jumped out. He asked, "5 are you going in such a hurry?"

"To find the best thing in the world, " Bobby Mouse replied. 

"The best thing in the world? I really want to 6 carrots(胡萝卜). I'm so hungry. That must be lots of carrots. I'll go with 7 , " Peter Rabbit said to Bobby Mouse and ran after him. 

Before long, they met Johnny Chuck, who asked the same question as Peter Rabbit just did. 

"To find the 8 thing in the world! Would you like to join us?" they shouted. 

"The best thing in the world?" said Johnny Chuck. "9 is more enjoyable than my own little home, the warm sunshine and the beautiful blue sky. I will 10 go with you!" So he stayed at home and played among flowers with Old Mother Wind happily. 

When Bobby Mouse and Peter Rabbit finally reached the grass, they had run far and fast all day long but still they didn't find the best thing in the world. When the 11 came, they started going back home. Now they didn't hurry in the dark 12 they were very tired and hungry. 

They came across Old Mother Wind halfway home. 

"Did you 13 the best thing in the world?" asked Old Mother Wind. 

"No!" Their 14 sounded very sad. 

"Johnny Chuck has it, " she said. " It is being 15 with the things you have. The best thing in the world is already around you. "

 Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone(克隆). So do I. My son Jody has  1 school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren't written until the last minute.

I' ve been a  2 all my adult life. My daughter is a university student who is  3 in learning language. Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a"vo-tech" student(技校学生). They' re called"motorheads" by the rest of the students.

I was  4 when an assistant in my office first called him" motorhead". "Hey, he' s a good kid," I wanted to say. "And smart, really."

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed,5 . They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don't often make school honor rolls(光荣榜).

 But being the 6 of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who work in clean shirts in offices don't have the  7 that motorheads have. I began to learn this when one day my car 8 . The cost to repair it was about $800. "Hey,I can fix it," said Jody. I  9 it, but let him go ahead. To be honest, I think I had nothing to  10 .

My son, with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got  11 from a junkyard(旧车场), and ability from vo-tech classes. The cost was $25 instead of $800.

 Since that  12 repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a fridge have been fixed. Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repair to him.

 These kids are happiest when doing  13 . They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright14 their hands and clothes are dirty.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics. My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made15 . I don't want him to be my clone anymore!
