It's Sunday. Children don't go to school on Sundays. But Kate gets up early in the morning. “It's my birthday. I'm eight years old today.” she thinks, “Where are Dad and Mum? I want to know what they can give me for my birthday.”

    Her father and mother are not at home. They are going shopping. And now they are talking about what to buy for Kate.

—Dad: How about the doll? It looks nice. I think Kate would like the doll.

—Mom: I don't think so. She is not a little girl. I think she likes a new dress. Girls often like new dresses very much.

—Dad: But she has a few new dresses and some new blouses. Oh, I think she must be very happy to have a box of colorful pencils and some picture books. Do you think so?

— Mom: Yes. Let's go over there and buy them.

    We often hear stories of animals rescuing people .But now someone has managed to return the favor .

The event took place one snowy January morning Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park." As I was walking, I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out, "said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog." someone else told me the lake was only one - meter deep, but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6- cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck, and pulled him out. I don't think I have ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay—— no one was particularly worried, about me!"

    A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen."The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it, the owner Smith was in the water forcing his way through the ice. I can't begin to imagine how cold it was. Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber — he just crawled back out, put the dog on its lead, and went home."

    Many regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith is quite laid- back about it."Most dog owners are the same as me.They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future, I'm going to make sure he's on lead near any ice ponds,

"Never give up!"It is my law(法则) of my life. It has brought me 1 . I learnt the law from my father's 2  story.

My father was 3  in a poor village in the north of Jiangsu, China. When he was a young boy, he went to school in the morning, and then 4  in the fields till sunset. And then he did his homework and didn't sleep 5  midnight. Life was hard, 6  the family had no money!

At the age of , my father 7  the United States. It was the land of gold. and8  people could become rich there.

"Why don't I go to America?"he thought to 9  , full of hope.

So my father came to America."I had thought it was easy to 10  money in America," he told me."But when I arrived there, I realised it was not true. They did not like to hire (雇用) me because I spoke 11  English. Later, I worked in a small restaurant, cleaning up tables, washing dishes and sweeping the floor. Life was 12  for the first few years, and I worked from am to pm. I wanted to go to school to learn English, but it was impossible. I couldn't 13  to go to school."

My father 14  working hard, and finally succeeded. He often says to me,"If you want something, you have to work for it and never give up."

Things do not come 15  in life. That is what I learnt from my father.

When I had something difficult to do, I used to ask my mother for help. But she always said, "Do it yourself, dear." I was not glad at all. I thought she was the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} mother in the world!

For example, one day, I decided to invite some friends to my home. My bedroom was not in order. Books were everywhere. And I didn't {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. I asked my mother to help me clean it, but she still said, " Do it yourself, girl."

Because of my "lazy mother" , I have to {#blank#}3{#/blank#} my clothes and clean my room. I have to help my parents cook food and I even have to go to the dentist by myself. It is really hard for me to do everything {#blank#}4{#/blank#}, but I have learned a lot.

As time goes by, I understand my mother. She makes me clever and hard-working!

Health is very important to everyone. Different people have their own ways to keep fit. A lot of people like running on the treadmills (跑步机). But it is not a good way to make you strong and healthy. Here are some reasons why you should run outdoors but not on the treadmills.

It costs you a lot of money to buy a treadmill. You can run outdoors, and it costs you nothing! Walk outside and the whole world is your treadmill. If you don't mind getting a little dirty, outdoor activities will help you.

Treadmills can become boring. You are limited to what's in front of you. Running and exercising outside provides a beautiful scenery (风景). Studies show that just looking at photos of nature can lower blood pressure (降低血压), so imagine what running through it will do. The fresh air and the unpolluted nature will also make you run more easily.

You burn (燃烧) more calories running outside than you do on a treadmill, because you have to work harder in order to move your body. When you run on a treadmill, you only move your legs. But when exercising outside, you must move your legs and your hands and so on.

Why not go for a run outdoors? Come on!
