Rose is a student from the U. S. She is in Shanghai with her parents now. She doesn't know Chinese, but she is trying to study and speak it. She often tries to speak Chinese with her Chinese friends. Sometimes they don't understand her, because she can't speak Chinese well.

    It's Saturday morning. Rose goes out. She is on her way to the park. She is going there to see a flower fair(展销会). But she doesn't know how to get there. She asks a Chinese boy the way. The boy can't understand her. Then she takes out a pen and a piece of paper. She draws flowers on it, and then gives the picture to the boy and says something about it. The boy smiles and then shows Rose the way to the park.

It's Friday evening. My daughters sighed (叹息) when I gently took the iPads away from their laps. One by one, our screens were turned off. We lit the candles and sat down to have a big meal.

We call it our "Technology Shabbat" (科技安息日), which lasts from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.

I first understood the importance of "Technology Shabbat" in 2008, when my father had got brain cancer. Some days he would have only one awake hour, and the only thing I wanted to do was to be with him. When I looked after my father, I turned off my mobile phone.

During our "Technology Shabbat", time slows down. Our Saturdays now feel like mini-vacations. We drive cars or ride bikes. We work in the garden, play board games and cook meals with our kids. I feel like a better mother, wife and person.

Keeping a balance between the good and the bad of technology is important for my family. The technology helps us share knowledge and funny ideas all over the world. But the technology also takes something away from us. When we stay up late at night linking (连接) from website to website or sending messages, we click again and again until we have been overloaded (超负荷的).

Now we're rushing into the time full of high technology. We should pay attention to what we are doing online and when we should go offline.

I will always remember the most important thing in my family: Technology Shabbat.

Old wives' tales are pieces of advice that are supposed to solve common problems such as the medical ones or some problems at home. They are usually passed down through talking，and there are only a few having been written down. Some of them sound ridiculous and have no scientific meaning at all，just like jokes，while others are more reasonable，which are realized to be true. 

Often，old wives' tales take the form of warnings and are a way to prevent poor behavior in children. For example， "Eating candy before bedtime brings you bad dreams" is a common old wives' tale that was probably thought up to stop children from eating too many unhealthy snacks. Similarly， "If you've been lying，your nose will be longer" is a trick trying to get naughty children to tell the truth. 

Other old wives' tales want to give advice about how to keep away from illnesses. "If you go outside with wet hair，you'll catch a cold" is an old wives' tale that's still commonly heard today. However，colds are not caused by cold weather or wet hair. Instead，they are caused by viruses （病毒）. 

"Feed a cold，starve a fever" means that you should eat plenty of food when you have a cold，but not eat when you have a fever. This piece probably comes from the fact that people with a fever usually lose their appetite （胃口） anyway. Medical science has found that the body stops eating much when you have a fever because little food makes your immune system （免疫系统） fight bacterial infections （细菌感染），while eating a little more makes your immune system fight against viruses，like colds. 

There are hundreds of old wives' tales. Although there may be truth in a few of them，if you bear one，it's best not to take it too seriously. 

Danald Stawd, a nice vet(兽医) in San Diego, had experienced defeat in his job. The animal 1 where he worked was crowded with abandoned(被遗弃的) pets,2 owners were struggling to fight with their income going down. So they had no3 to take care of these tiny creatures. In those days, animals 4 be euthanized(安乐死) if nobody wanted them in 7 days. This situation troubled Stawd, even leading him to consider 5 his job. 

One fateful day, outside a convenience shop, he 6 a homeless man with a dog suffering from a skin disease. The man,7 for a solution, shared his dog's sufferings. Stawd examined the dog and offered some medicine to him.8 , the man thanked him, saying " Thank you, . . . s. . i. . r. . , for not refusing or ignoring(忽略) me. " The very words served as a wakeup9 to Stawd and inspired him to make a big decision. 

10 he began working as a street vet during his spare time, determined to 11 on his own. Over a nine-year period, he provided 12 medical care for over 1, 000 homeless people and their pets. 

For Stawd, the most meaningful part of his work 13 the one-on-one connections with the homeless. By14 helping their loved pets, Stawd helps rebuild their15 in humanity(人性), offering hope to those in trouble.
