The Youngest Skier To The South Pole
On Friday December 9th, a 16-year-old skier, Ameba Hempleman-Adams reached the South Pole with her father after skiing 97 miles and spending 17 nights on the ice. On the final day they skied 14 miles and afterwards Ameba said she felt" elated and tired" on reaching the South Pole.
"The biggest challenges were the freezing cold and eating only dried food. The best bit has been experiencing what Dad does on expeditions(探险).It's the first time I've been on a difficult long journey with him and now I know what it's like. The trip brought me closer to Dad, but I also had to put up with his snoring(鼾声)which was terrible.', She added," Would I do it again? I'm not sure. I'll have to think about that after a few nights' sleep! At times it's been really hard: I've got aching shoulders, and my back's been sore from pulling my sledge(雪橇), I've got blisters(水泡)on my feet from the boots and I've got a cold burn on my nose from my sunglasses. _______"
She said the most extraordinary part of the trip had been the breathtaking scenery and the sense of isolation in the Antarctic landscape." I've really missed my friends while I've been away and want to thank them for all their messages of support."
Friends and relatives who posted comments on Ameba's expedition website paid tribute(致敬)to her positive attitude which , they said ,would be an inspiration to others.
Her father, David, said" Ameba has done amazing well. I'm proud of her. She showed real determination. She was tough and she pulled her sledge the whole way. It was a special experience to share those 97 miles with her."
Kinds of friendships
There are many different kinds of friendships to distinguish. If people are honest with one another and clearly define(界定)which kind of friendship they have, they can avoid a lot of misunderstanding. And if people can learn to move on from a relationship that is over, they will be better off.
Then, what are the different kinds of friendship?Well, the first kind is the social friend. This is the kind of friend that people have most of.This kind of friend isn't someone who you hang out with all the time or live with, but you know them and associate with(与…交往)them at a bar, store or some other public places. They're nice to talk to when you see them and are usually good for a laugh. However, they are not good to talk about a problem with.
The second kind is the counselor(顾问).This is a friend you go to when you need advice or just someone to listen. You value their wisdom or at least the fact that they are good at listening to you.You can tell this kind of friend almost anything without fearing gossip(闲言碎语).They are the kind of friend you can trust but you just don't hang out together, unless you want to talk about something important.
The third kind is the fun boy/girl.This kind of friend can usually be counted on to go somewhere with you at a moment's notice. They like hanging out with you whether you're going to a store or a bar or wherever. They're good tension relievers because you know you're just going to have a good time. This kind of friend isn't someone you go to for advice;in fact you shouldn't affect your relationship by getting serious about something. They're trustworthy and you know they aren't going to gossip about what you do together.Don't expect anything else from this kind of friend; just have a good time.
The fourth kind of is the work friend. This is the friend you have at work. You interact(交流)at work only. This may include having a break together, maybe even shopping with them or running an errand(差使)during lunch or after work. They're usually not good to get advice form but on some occasions things might be discussed and you might give each other advice.Mostly you talk about the job.
The last kind is the lifetime friend. This friendship is very rare and usually is found in marriage relationships. This kind of friend is all the above rolled into one.

Sometimes we can get so caught up in the stress and worry of our personal lives that our minds become too confused to operate effectively. This is especially dangerous in a test-taking situation. After hours of reading and studying, our brains can lock up in a state of overload.
In a stressful situation it's often a must to clear your mind completely to allow your brain to refresh itself and recalibrate all of its functions. But when you're tense, clearing your mind isn't so easy!Try this relaxation technique if you think your brain has seized up from information overload.
⒈Set aside at least five minutes for quiet "clearing" time.If you're at school, see if you can put your head down somewhere or find an empty room or quiet space. If necessary, set a watch (or phone) alarm or ask a friend to tap you on the shoulder at a designated time.
⒉Think of a time or place that puts you into a complete state of peace. This place will vary from person to person.Have you ever sat on the beach watching the waves come in and realized you've "zoned out" fora while? This is the sort of experience you're looking for.Other experiences that make us zone out could be: Sitting in the dark and staring at Christmas tree lights—remember how peaceful that feels?
⒊Cover your eyes and go to your "place".If you are at school preparing for a test before class, you may simply rest your elbows on the desk and put your hands over your eyes. For some people,it may not be a good idea to put your head down.(You might fall asleep!)
Don't let any thoughts creep into your head.As soon as you start to think about a test problem, clear away the thought and concentrate on your peaceful place.
⒋Snap out of it!Remember, this is not nap time. The point here is to refresh your brain. After five or ten minutes of clearing time, take a brisk walk or take a drink of water to re-energize your mind and body.Stay relaxed and resist the urge to think about the things that are stressing you out or clogging your brain.Don't let your brain go back to freeze-out.
Now go on with your test or study session refreshed and ready!
