I had an unpaid job at a small station, and one night, when everyone else was ill, I read the news on air. I did well, and as a result, I got my first paid job!

    The teacher sent me home with a note for my mother that said I needed to visit the eye doctor because I failed the vision test. The trip home that day was very slow.

    My mother said it would all be just fine. "It wouldn't hurt a bit," she said. But I wasn't worried about pain-I was worried about looking 1.

    The next day, my mother pulled me to the eye doctor's office. I 2 a set of frames (镜框) and tried to believe my mother when she said they looked really 3 on me. The doctor said the glasses would be ready soon. But I wasn't ready at all, and I didn't think I ever would be.

    When the glasses arrived, the eye doctor put them on my face and walked me out onto the sidewalk in front of his office. When I looked 4 from my shoes, I found myself in a whole new world – a world filled with 5 pictures, bright colours, and fine detail everywhere I looked. The past summer, Elaine had spent long hours working in the McMurdo research station. Her job was to look after the fire extinguishers (灭火器) and fire alarms. But on her days off, Elaine loved to explore (探索) ice and caves outside the 1 .

Her penguin guide would join her group for the long winter ahead. Thanks to that bird's 15 , Elaine would head home with a story that she'd never forget.

Dong Lina grew up in a farmer's family in Dalian, Liaoning. She couldn't see clearly when she was a baby. She couldn't see anything when she was only ten years old.

Dong went to a special school for people who can't see or hear. After that, she learned tuina and then found a job. One of her teachers said tuina was her only way out. But Dong didn't think so.

In 2006, 22-year-old Dong took part in a radio host (主持人) programme. Soon she fell in love with broadcasting. It was really difficult for her to learn that, but Dong tried her best and practiced every day. A year later, she got good grades (等级) in the Mandarin Proficiency Test. She could work as a radio host!

In 2015, Dong became the host of a radio programme. And in the same year, she went to learn radio and TV broadcasting in Communication University of China. She also worked as a part-time teacher in her free time.

Last July, Dong finished her study in the university.

She's the first visually impaired master (硕士) of broadcasting in China. She says, "We should always have dreams and work hard for them."

How did you spend your summer holiday last month? I'd like to tell you 1 happened to me during my holiday. 

My 2 planned a relaxing and happy trip. We didn't need to keep up with our work and studies. On the first day, 3 we started out for Shanghai, we saw on TV that the traffic was heavy. So my parents 4 not to drive our car but to take the bullet train(高速火车) to Shanghai. It was the first time that I had ridden on the bullet train, so I was really 5 .

On the way, an American girl sat next to me and I talked to her. She told me that she came here for a short stay—her father came to China on business. In one year he would 6 to his company in the US. "How are you getting along here?" I asked. "Pretty good. I 7 the life here. China is a beautiful and great country. Besides, Chinese people are pretty 8 , "she said. Hearing that, I felt proud that I'm Chinese! With new friends around, the girl still missed her friends in the US very much. "It doesn't matter. I could always connect with them by writing letters and emails or making phone calls, " she said with a sweet9 . It was so great for her to be able to go through life in10 countries and cultures. I hope I can experience different cultures in other countries some day.
