As an engineer, I've spent years living in Beijing. But I haven't had many truly outdoor experiences. However,{#blank#}1{#/blank#} trip to Nanshan Skiing Village gave me some unforgettable memories.

As my friend and I sat together, I felt for the{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(one) time that I had truly left the busy life of Beijing. Hanging up in the air a few{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(meter) off the ground, I took in the wide view of the countryside and enjoyed the peace.

My friends had already started making their way down the hill. And I was about {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(join) them but suddenly felt afraid as I found how easy it was to pick up speed. I tried to turn to the side to slow down, but I ended up{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(fall) down into the snow instead. However, I was not ready to give{#blank#}6{#/blank#} and pulled myself together. I worked hard to make{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(I) way to one of the starting points.

{#blank#}8{#/blank#} I still felt nervous,I made some progress after failing to slow down a few times. I was able to ski {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(well) and faster.

By the day's end, I have learned by accepting what seems scary, and find both{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(confident) and peace. I have also understood what it meant to take risks and get out of my comfort zone(舒适区).

Children all around the world love Lego bricks(乐高积木). With those bricks, they can make anything they want. Lego bricks are a great toy(玩具) to play with. Now, for the first time, Lego makes Braille Bricks in English and French, making them a useful toy for blind(失明的) children. 

Lego Braille Bricks have dots (小圆点) on them. The dots are Braille. By feeling (感受) them, blind children can read words and numbers. They can also learn Braille when playing with the bricks. It makes learning easy and fun. 

Olivia is a blind girl, and she learns Braille when playing with the Lego bricks at her school. She loves to play with them and learn Braille at the same time. Her mother also plays with her at home and now she also knows Braille. 

Reece, a little boy, uses the Lego bricks to teach his family Braille. Now, his mother and sister know Braille as well. He says, "I feel so good. Because my loved ones learn something new and I am their teacher. So cool!"

Lego makes its colourful bricks useful. Let's thank it for bringing a new way of playing and learning!

Mr. Dawson was an old man with a bad temper. Kids were afraid to go into his yard to pick apples. 

One day, 12-year-old Janet and her friend Amy had to walk past Mr. Dawson's house. When Janet saw him, she suggested crossing the street to the other side. But Amy said they needn't. 

When Mr. Dawson saw Amy, he smiled and said, "Hello, Amy! I see you have a new friend with you today." Amy smiled back. Mr. Dawson looked friendly and gave them each a fresh apple. 

Later Janet asked Amy, "Everyone says he is the most unwelcome person in town. Why was he so kind to us?" Amy explained that when she first walked past his house, she was also afraid of him. But she imagined there was an invisible smile on his face and then started talking to him. Beginning with a "hello" at first, and then speaking more each time. 

"An invisible smile?" Janet was puzzled. "Yes," answered Amy, "My grandma told me to think so. She says smiles can spread. If we keep smiling at someone, sooner or later they will smile back."

Remember what Amy's grandma said, and we will find that most people can't refuse our smile.

One day Jack's wife was cleaning out a closet(壁橱)."Look at all these umbrellas," she said to Jack. "There are eight and they are all broken. I'll take them to the umbrella shop and have them mended." Jack said. Jack took the eight umbrellas to the shop and left them there. "They'll be ready tomorrow," the shopkeeper said.

That evening Jack went home from the office by bus as usual. He sat next to an old woman. She had an umbrella on the floor near her. When the bus reached his stop. he picked up her umbrella and stood up, "Hey!" the woman said. "That's my umbrella!"

"I'm sorry," Jack said, and at the same time he gave the umbrella to her. "I took it by mistake. Please excuse me."

The next day he got back the umbrellas from the umbrella shop and got on the bus. As he sat down, a person behind him said, "You certainly have a successful day!" He turned around and saw the woman whose umbrella had almost been taken by him the day before.

I felt coming steps. She was coming to teach all things to me, and to love me. 

I still remember the morning my teacher came, she led me into her room and gave me a doll (玩具娃娃). When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word "d-o-l-l". I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate (模仿) it. When I succeeded in making the letters correctly, I was so excited and proud. I did not know I was spelling, even didn't understand everything has a name. 

 Once, as I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan put my old doll onto my leg, spelled"d-o-l-l" and tried to make me understand they were both dolls. Another time, she tried to tell me that"m-u-g" is mug and that"w-a-t-e-r" is water, but I still mixed them up. Hopelessly, she had to teach me from the beginning.  ▲ , so I threw the new doll upon the floor. 

I was quite happy when I felt the pieces of the broken doll at my feet. I was neither sad nor regretful. In my still, dark world, there was no warmth or love. I felt my teacher sweep the pieces aside, and it seemed that my trouble moved away. 

Later, we walked down the path to a well house. Someone was drawing water(抽水) and she placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stream flowed over one hand, she spelled the word"w-a-t-e-r" into the other, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still and paid my whole attention on her fingers. Suddenly I knew "w-a-t-e-r" meant the wonderful thing flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, and set it free!

I left the well house and wanted to learn more about the world. As we returned to the house, I remembered the doll I had broken. I picked up the pieces and tried to put them together. Then I cried, for I realised what I had done, and for the first time I felt sad and regretful. 

I learned many new words that day. I do not remember what they all were, but I do know that mother, father, sister and teacher were among them. It would have been difficult to find a happier child than I was. While lying in my bed at the end of that day, I hoped for a new day to come for the first time.

When "the goddess scientist" Yan Ning was {#blank#}1{#/blank#} teenager, she was interested in science and was truly {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (talent) in it. Her Chemistry teacher told her that girls were good at science. That's why she expected {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (become) a scientist.

After years of hard work, she went to Tsinghua University to study and then studied for her doctor's degree (学位) at Princeton University. There she {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (choose) the most difficult project in the lab. In 2007, she finished school and went back to teach at Tsinghua University. At the age of 30, she became {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (young) professor (教授) at Tsinghua University.

{#blank#}6{#/blank#} the road to being a woman scientist is not easy. Yan works so hard that she{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (usual) works for more than 14 hours a day. She never feels tired because she thinks it is very enjoyable to do what she loves. Yan got lots of {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (prize) for her great work. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}November 21, 2023, she helped to set up (成立) Shenzhen Academy of Medical Science (深圳医学科学院).
