The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and TV, telephone and so on. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has also brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution (污染). Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad to all living things in the world. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal (煤) in houses and factories in the city.
The pollution of SO2 is now the most dangerous problem of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.

第一篇

Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal.

This man-made waterway — known in China as Da Yunhe — is more than 1,700 kilometres long and some parts of it are more than 2,000 years old. It connects the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It's the longest man-made waterway in the world.

It was built as a way to transport grain(谷物) from the rich agricultural land in China's south to cities in the north. In fact, it's not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers connected together. It's still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport grain and many other types of cargo(货物).

Now the Chinese government is doing new work on the Grand Canal. It is making parts of it deeper, so bigger ships can use it. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not as much in the north. The canal will carry millions of litres of water from the south to the north.

The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall, and not very many tourists visit it. But it's possible to go on a cruise(乘船游览)along some of the oldest parts of the canal. Passengers on these cruises see beautiful parts of China that other visitors don't see.

 阅读理解

There's nothing better than having a sweet sleep after a full day of tiring work. Like people, animals need to rest after working hard, too. Some animals sleep in water while others dig holes under the ground. Some even sleep high in trees or under the leaves. Although they sleep in different ways, all of them find ways to have a good rest.

Some animals in the sea sleep in strange ways. For example, fish sleep with their eyes open. They seem to look ahead far into the sea when they take breaks. Sea otters(海獭)sometimes sleep in beds of the plants that grow in the sea. This keeps them from moving away. Parrotfish(鹦嘴鱼)blow something from their mouths when they are ready to sleep. Then a bubble(气泡)will be formed around them. The bubble protects them from danger while they sleep.

Some animals sleep under the ground. Chipmunks(花栗鼠)sleep curled up(蜷缩)in a ball. Their beds are made of leaves and grass. In winter, they sleep for two weeks and wake up to eat the food. Then they go back to sleep for another two weeks before waking up again. Some desert frogs(青蛙)dig underground holes during the hot and dry season. A frog may stay in its hole for months.

High above the ground, monkeys find places in trees each evening before they sleep. The tall trees help to keep monkeys safe during the night. Some insects(昆虫)even sleep under the leaves that will be their next meal. A bee may climb down into a flower to rest. When it climbs out the next morning, it rests well and is ready for work.

阅读下面短文, 按照句子结构的语法性和上下文连贯性, 在空格处填入一个适当的词, 或使用括号中词语的正确形式填空。

A growing number of"silent cafes"appear across Japan. People can't talk in the cafe. They can write down what they need on the pad to communicate {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the cafe workers. This kind of cafes meets the need of people {#blank#}2{#/blank#} like to be alone for a while.

Chihiro, a 23-year-old nurse, is one of the big fans of silent cafes. "It's a pleasure to sit somewhere quietly by{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(I), "she said. "I work as a nurse and life is so busy that sometimes I just want to escape. "She continued, "This is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} amazing place {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(help) me find some peace. I feel{#blank#}6{#/blank#}( comfort) here. "

Taiki Watanabe, the owner of a silent cafe, used to work in another cafe. "I really like the idea of{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(open) a silent cafe. Now I enjoy working in {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(silent) all me time. "Mr Watanabe added, "You can't speak in my cafe. If you need to make an order, there are pads to write on. Most people come{#blank#}9{#/blank#} their own and read a book, work, write or enjoy a hobby. Few of them even do nothing. It's a way for people to-forget their daily tasks. Everyone {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (be) happy with the quiet environment in the cafe. "
