In many countries, holidays are important parts in people's life. Let's take some countries for example.

America

    American people's holidays are flexible (灵活的). They can use up their holidays once, and they can also use them up a few times. During the holidays, they still get money.

Canada

    Many people in Canada can rest three days a week. They have all kinds of activities (活动) for holidays. They may go fishing, boating or mountain climbing. Also, they have long holidays. They may go to the beach to spend a sunny winter holiday. Like American people, Canadians also get money during the holidays.

France

    People in France are very good at enjoying life. They have a 6-week holiday every year, and they work less than 40 hours a week.

Mrs. Baylor has a pet parrot. The bird is smart and it's learning (学习) to talk these days.

This morning, Mrs Baylor goes shopping and leaves (留) the parrot at home. There is something wrong with her sink (水槽) and Mrs. Baylor forgets a plumber(水管工) will come to fix it.

KNOCK(敲门声) KNOCK "Who is it? " the parrot calls.

"It's the plumber." the man says. He waits, but no one comes to the door. 

KNOCK KNOCK "Who is it? " the parrot calls.

"It's the plumber!" the man says. But still, no one opens the door.

KNOCK KNOCK "Who is it? " the parrot calls.

The man lets out a shout (吼叫), "IT'S THE PLUMBER! " This time, he shouts so loud that he loses his breath (呼吸)and falls down (倒下).

Just then, Mrs. Baylor comes back and she just finds a man on the ground.

"Oh, my dear!" she says, "Who is this?" And the parrot shouts, "IT'S THE PLUMBER!" 

Today is Sunday. Qing Lan Clothes Shop is open (开业). It is very big and its clothes look nice. The following form (表格) is about the clothes and the prices.

Billy always loved blueberries. They were his favorite fruit. Today he was going to make juice with his uncle. His uncle liked to make juice out of everything. He made carrot juice, apple juice, vegetable juice, and more juices. He had never made blueberry juice before though!

First, Billy and his uncle went to a blueberry farm. They were each given a basket. They picked for an hour and got several pounds. It was hard work picking the little berries from the trees. Now Billy understood why they were expensive in the store.

Next, they had to wash the fruit. Some of them still had leaves. Those had to be pulled off. Then the bad berries had to be thrown away. They washed the berries and made them air- dry.

After that, they pushed the blueberries through a strainer(过滤器). The strainer caught most of the seeds and skins, and only left a small glass of dark purple juice to them.

When they tasted the juice, it wasn't very sweet. Billy's uncle didn't want to add white sugar(糖) to the juice. It was better to use a naturally sweet juice, like apple juice, pear juice, or grape juice. They use grape juice as a sweetener, because grapes had a similar color to the blueberries.

Finally, they could drink it. It was a lot of work to make juice, but it sure was refreshing!

In China, it's common to see people on the streets using their fans(扇子) to beat the heat in summer. However, the traditional Chinese fan is not just a tool for cooling down, but a symbol of traditional Chinese culture.

The history of Chinese fans goes back to the Shang Dynasty (朝代) ( about 1600 B. C~1046 B. C). One of the earliest fans was known as Shanhan. It was a bit like today's umbrella. It tried to keep people away from the strong sunshine and rainfall. Later, Shanhan developed into a long- handled fan called Zhangshan(障扇).

In fact, the fan was not used to help people cool down until the Zhou Dynasty. At that time, fans were usually made of birds' feathers and mainly used by the emperors. Later, bamboo fans and cattail- leaf fans(蒲扇) were invented during the Han Dynasty. Both were most popular among the common people during the Song Dynasty.

Years later, the folding fan was introduced. It soon became popular. However, the best thing of a folding fan was the pictures on it. If a famous person painted the fan, it could cost a lot of money. For example, a folding fan painted by Zhang Daqian was sold for$252,000. Qi Baishi and Xu Beiho ng were also well known.
