Forests have always been useful and important to men who make use of them in many ways. Every day trees are serving man everywhere. Trees supply man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats, bridges and so on. Furniture such as desks, chairs and beds is made of wood. Trees can stop man from the terrible heat. They're also useful in preventing(阻止) good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains. If there were no forests, heavy rains would wash away the rich surface(表层) soil that is so important to plants. The result is that the land will become a desert. There are plenty of desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas used to be very rich areas, but men in the past had no enough knowledge about science of nature, and they cut down too many trees in the area where they lived and never planted new ones. By and by, the rich surface soil was blown and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the rich land changed into useless deserts where nothing could grow.

    In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution．They join environment clubs．In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean．

    Here are some things students often do．

    No-garbage lunches．How many lunch bags do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again．Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school．

    No-car day．On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car including the students and the teachers．Cars give pollution to us, so remember:

    Walk, jump, bike, or run!

    Use your legs! It's lots of fun!

    Turn off the water! Do you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty cubic meters of water an hour? In a year, that would fill in a small river. In the environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets．

    We love our environment．Let's work together to make it better．

    More and more people like bicycling and it is no surprise. It is fun, healthy and good for the environment(环境). Maybe that's why there are 1. 4 billion bicycles and only 400 million cars on roads worldwide today. Bikes can take you almost anywhere, and there is no oil cost!

    Get on a bicycle and ride around your neighborhood. You may discover something new all around you. Stopping and getting off a bike is easier than stopping and getting out of your car. You can bike to work and benefit(受益) from the enjoyable exercise without polluting the environment. You don't even have to ride all the way.

    Folding(可折叠的) bikes work well for people who ride the train. Just fold the bike and take it with you. You can do the same on an airplane. A folding bike can be packed in a suitcase. You can also take a common bike with you when you fly. But be sure to look for information by getting on airline websites. Not all airlines are bicycle-friendly to travelers.

    Taking away a city's rubbish is a big job. Every day tracks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.

    In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.

    To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.

    In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus, which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help make them grow.

    Both seasonal flu, a disease like a very bad cold, and much larger pandemics, like the one caused by H7N9（禽流感） in 2013, are the result of a race between the flu virus  and the immune system which can protect people from illness. Here's how it works.

    Viruses, which cause pandemics, have two important proteins "haemagglutinin(H) and neuraminidase(N).H helps the virus go into a cell .N helps new virus break out of that cell .They are parts of a virus that may be known and dealt with by the immune system

    A flu virus attacks a host cell in order to reproduce itself. But the virus created out of it is quite different now. The virus's genetic material is copied with low fidelity. That difference produces virus which immune system does not always know and deal with immediately. Each year's seasonal virus is therefore a little bit different, and thus requires an updated vaccine to prevent people from getting that disease.

    Pandemics viruses have bigger changes in this process .Many hosts' defences are unprepared for such big changes, which happen three or four times a century .The 1918 pandemics was caused by viruses carrying H1 and N1.Anotber two pandemics in 1957 and 1968 were caused by viruses carrying H2and H3 together with N2.They are numbered by scientists. Much of this change goes on outside humans. A flu is usually from sick binds. Sometimes a bird-flu appears with materiel that enable it to spread among people .The H7N9 is recently worrying scientists in the health center.

    The flu virus sometimes jumps directly from a bird(often a chicken) to a person, but more usually passes through a pig The cells in bird and human are built differently, It means us that the virus needs different sets of material to attack them .Pig cells have features of both so that it can act as a platform in which the virus can fit from one to the other .Even after it has made humans ill, a virus cannot go ca to cause a pandemic unless it also gets the ability to pus easily between people, Luckily, this is something H7N9 has yet to do.
