One day a lady who was riding in a coach saw a boy on the road without wearing any shoes and was seemingly very painful. She asked the coachman to take him up, and said she would pay for him.

When the coach reached the end of its journey, the kind lady found that the poor boy was going to the nearest sea port, trying to find a job as a sailor.

Twenty years afterwards, on the same road, a sea captain who was on a coach saw an old lady walking tiredly along, and he made the coachman pull up his horses. He put the old lady inside, saying," I'll pay for her." Feeling thankful, the old lady said," I am too poor to pay for a ride now. You are such a kind man!"

The captain told her that he always felt sorry for those who had to walk as she had been doing; then he added," I remember, twenty years ago, near this very place, I was a poor boy walking along the road, and a kind lady paid for me to ride."

"Ah," she said," I am that lady! But things have changed with me since then."

"Well," said the captain," I have made a fortune. I'm rich now and have come home to enjoy it. I will allow you twenty-five pounds a year as long as you live." The old lady burst into tears, and gratefully accepted the sailor's offer.

"Throw the bread upon the waters, and you will find it after many days." Let me explain these words.

In the land of Egypt the river Nile overflows its banks once a year. When the fields on the riversides are covered with the water, people throw their seed on it, and the seed sinks down into the soft mud. When the water disappears, the seed takes root. After many days, then comes the harvest, and rich crops of grain are reaped (收获).

The lady had thrown her bread upon the waters and was rewarded (奖赏) with more bread. She had done a kind act to a poor boy; and, after many years, he in return was able to do her a great kindness.

I am off on a trip on my own. Yes ! Alone! I can't wait to get going to Europe to see some cities I really want to visit. It is great because I can choose what I want to do in each city. I am going to travel by train on the Eurorail.

The train trip was fast and the views of the countryside were amazing. Now I am in Salzburg, Austria. The quiet hills of Austria are a great place to relax. The movie The Sound of Music was filmed around this area. Mozart, the famous musician, was from here. I listened to some of his classical music.

The train ride to Amsterdam was a long one. It gave me time to write some postcards to send back home. Amsterdam is a fun city, full of friendly locals and many tourists. I spent the whole day visiting the art museums here. The museum about the famous Dutch artist Van Gogh is filled with history and beautiful art. I took a boat ride and saw local people in traditional dress. I even got to taste some delicious Dutch cheese.

Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of the safest places in the world. I spent a busy and nice day at the Tivoli Amusement Park. It is a huge park which even has concerts and dance shows. Hans Christian Anderson, a famous writer of children's books, was born in this city. I found a lovely bookshop and bought two of his fairy tale books, The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling. My travels alone are done! What an adventure this trip has been! I love it.

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view (观察) of the art works.
A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chatted non-stop between themselves. I watched them a moment and decided the wife was doing all the talk. I admired the husband's patience for putting up with her continuous talk. Distracted by their noise, I moved on.
I met with them several times as I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant burst of words, I moved away quickly.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a purchase when the couple came near to the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended it into a long stick and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wife's jacket.
“He's a brave man.” The clerk at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery he made a promise that his life wouldn't change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there's a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked, “He can't see.”
“Can't see? You're wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do.” The clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away hand in hand.
