I was in line waiting to pay. In line there were two people before me. A little boy was buying some rather strange clothes. He chatted with anyone who was interested in the clothes and soon we learnt that he was going to a kindergarten(幼儿园) party. He had done a great job of putting together interesting costumes.
I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change(零钱). It seemed that he had robbed his pig bank(猪形储蓄罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was short after counting all the money. The boy thought for a moment and said, “Please keep the shirt and I will come back with more money. “
It was clear that he had already used all the money he had and he was $ 8.00 short. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that. “I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills(纸币) and we needed the cashier to get the change for us. Other shoppers began digging into their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and touching(令人感动的) as all these strangers seemed to react(反应) with the same mind. All wanted to be of help. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” The cashier didn't need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me, who had been the first to offer help, said, “Wait! I didn't even get a chance to give anything!”
I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this. “ The little boy smiled and thanked us. We wished him the best and he left. I was left with a good feeling. I had seen the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It sure feels good to give, doesn't it?” I smiled back and said, “Yes !”

    Andrew Engel was puzzled. He was sitting in class, but had no idea what the other students were talking about. He had done his homework, paid attention to lectures. and taken notes, but nothing was familiar." Everyone is se much cleverer than I am, " he thought. It was a strange feeling, as he was always a good student in high school.

    He felt even more puzzled a few days later. He got lost on his way to his favourite cinema. What's worse, he began having trouble finding the right words when speaking. He asked, "What's for dinner, Mum? "after he had just eaten. Poor Andrew, he was only 15!

    His parents were worried and took Andrew to see a doctor. A brain scan(扫描)made it clear: Andrew had a malignant brain tumor(恶性脑肿瘤). It was pressing on the part of the brain that makes new memory. He should be operated on as soon as possible. Andrew was scared

    Doctors removed the tumor, but Andrew's memory was still poor. He was told he would probably never go back to school. Andrew was eager to enter a university, but it seemed that his dream wouldn't come true.

    "Even though they told me this, I knew I wanted to go back to school, "Andrew said." I wanted to get my memory back. "

    Andrew began to audit(旁听)an English class at a nearby school. In class, he took notes carefully and read his notes several times a day, then typed them again and again. He studied twelve hours a day, seven days a week. He worked ten times harder than other students. In 2007, at age 29, he graduated from a local university. Six months later, Andrew found a job.

A novel is a long story, usually a fictional book, which describes human experiences and interactions. It is in the form of prose(written or spoken language in its ordinary form), rather than poetry. The English-language novel, as we know it today, mainly began its development in the 1700s. Realism became important in literature at this point. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It was in this time period and mode of literature that women writers truly came into their own. Two famous women authors who influenced the history of literature were Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf.

Jane Austen(1775-1817) was an English author. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Jane's father was a priest. They were middle class, thought not rich. In the polite society of that time, which they were part of, the lives of girls and women were very much ruled by the social rules and morals of the day. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} The writer Walter Scott said of her novels, "That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements of feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I have ever met with."

She was concerned with how women came to marry as it was not a simple matter of falling in love with someone in those days. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}The other problem was money; parents needed to provide women with some money to take into a marriage. Parents often tried to find their daughters the right partners. That's why Jane herself never married and died aged only{#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

A.Parents had to be of a similar social place.

B.This means that authors tried to have their novels reflect real life.

C.Jane saw the ambition(野心) of parents in many of these situations.

D.Jane's stories focused on middle to upper class society which she knew, and the place of women in it.

E.Among her most famous novels are Sense and Sensibility(1811), Pride and Prejudice(1813) and Emma(1815).
