You probably don't think about soil often, but the following report may help you learn about science of soil.

What is soil made of?

Soil is made of sediments (沉积物) and humus(腐殖质). Sediment is small pieces of rock broken down over time by rain, ice, and wind. Sediment is often found in water. Humus comes from decayed(腐烂的) plants and animals. It helps give plants a lot of the food they need to grow.

How does soil form?

Over centuries, rock breaks down into very small pieces.

The rock pieces mix with humus.

The humus gets thicker and thicker over time. Soil is formed(形成)l

How are soils different?

Soils can be different colors and have different textures(质感). Texture is how the surface of an object feels. Color and texture are two features(特征) of soil.

Plants and soil

Plants do not grow well in some soils. Sandy soi1 is too dry. It does not hold water. Soil with too much clay is too thick. Most plants grow well in dark, rich garden soil that has different sediments and a lot of humus in it.

    When I was thirteen {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (year) old my father found a job in the city. So my family moved there. I also came to a new school near where we live. My old school was far away. At first, I did not know anyone in my class. I was very lonely {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I was afraid to make friends with my new classmates. I couldn't talk to anyone {#blank#}4{#/blank#} my problem, and I didn't want my parents to worry about me.

    Then one day, something good happened. I was sitting at my desk {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(happy) as usual while my classmates were talking happily with each other. At that moment, a boy came into the classroom. I didn't know who he {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(be). He passed me and then turned back. He looked at me and, without saying {#blank#}7{#/blank#} word, smiled. Suddenly, I felt happy, lively and warm. My heart {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(light)by that smile and my life changed. I started to talk with the other classmates and make friends. Day by day, I became much {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(close) to everyone in my class.

    Thanks to the smile, I have moved on to a new life. Now, I believe that the world is what you think it is. So smile at the world and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} will smile back.

①My birthday is on May 14. I don't have many friends. I am good at math and science. It is really good to have a science class every Tuesday and Friday. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Fires do happen. If there is a fire, you might not have much time to decide what to do. Being prepared and knowing what to do early can save your life. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Your family should practice this getting﹣out plan.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}  If you have such a meeting place outside, you can quickly make sure that everyone is out of the house.

    You should also remember that smoke is usually far more dangerous than the fire. A person can die after just a few minutes in a smoke filled room.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Finally, before you open any doors, always feel the door lock first. If the door lock is hot, fire must be on the other side of the door.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} You will have to find another way out. These are simple suggestions.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

    Gina, who is thirteen years old, got first prize in the "Young Cook of the Year" competition and she wants to write a recipe book for kids. "I want it to be fun to read and easy enough for children tousle," she says. Gina learned by watching her father, who's also good at cooking, in the kitchen. She wants to encourage other children to cook because "everyone needs to eat so it's a skill that will always be useful!" Seventeen-year-old Brian used to love running until he was hurt in a serious accident three years ago.  He lost part of one leg and didn't even expect to walk again Now he's an athlete who has recently taken part in a long race. "After my accident I wanted to give up," he says. "But now I'm happy to be alive and able to continue running." Helen has always been good at science, but she thought it was too difficult to become an inventor.

    Then she heard about an accident that had happened when a car hit a train in her town. "That gave me an idea," says the clever sixteen-year-old. It took her over a year to invent a small special machine that tells car drivers when a train is coming. One company is already interested in selling it, so it maybe in the shops soon!
