    When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I would make it home for the holidays. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have the three-day holiday posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a little snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood, there were lights, all colors, and ornaments (饰品) shining against the green of a pine.

    “Where did it come from?” I asked.

    “I asked the Gates boy to cut it,” my mother said. “I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when in great need…such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon.”

    The pine reached to the proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Crystal Star was in its place. A few green branches reached out a little awkwardly(难看) at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas.

    “It's not like the one you used to find,” my mother went on. “Yours were always in good shape. I suppose the Gates boy didn't know where to look for a better one. But I couldn't be fussy because he had tried his best.”

    “Don't worry,” I told her. “It's perfect.”

    It wasn't, of course, but at the moment I realized something for the first time: all Christmas trees are perfect.

For most teenagers, the kitchen may be a mysterious(神秘的) place. But Flynn McGarry is already able to take charge of(掌管) a kitchen.

At the age of 15, he was already a well-known teenage chef in the US. He has opened his own dining club at home and works with some of the best restaurants in his country.

McGarry's love for cooking started at the age of 10. He practiced his knife skills after school and taught himself from books and the Internet. In his room, there are no video games, basketballs or movie posters, but pots, cutting boards and pans(平底锅).

When he was 11, McGarry's parents helped turn his bedroom into a monthly supper club called Eureka. Each month, he hosted his mother's friends and soon won the title of "culinary prodigy(烹饪神童)". Now, people pay $160(979 yuan) per person to eat at Eureka.

McGarry does not stick with just simple types of cuisine(菜肴). He likes creating interesting dishes. "I could take a carrot and raise it to this amazing level that you'd never think you're eating a carrot," he said. The New York Times described his meals as "creative enough to make an experienced chef inferior(逊色的)."

As for the future, McGarry dreams of being a Michelin-starred chef. He plans to open his own restaurant by 19 and make it, as he puts it, "the best restaurant in the world."

Have you ever seen bronzeware(青铜器)? It can be thousands of years old. A middle chool in Shanxi held a bronzeware show named Daxzling Memories.  ▲ . They were made by students!

Junior high school students from Taiyuan Middle School made more than 130 pieces of " bronzeware". The materials(材料) included recycled hard paper boxes. They cut the paper boxes into shapes and then covered them with bronze- coloured paint or clay. These "bronzeware" artworks looked so real that student visitors felt like they went back in history. 

Li Danyu from Grade 7 made a set of chimes(编钟). He once watched a chime music show in Xi'an. The sound of this ancient musical instrument was so beautiful that he fell in love with it. For this reason, he decided to make one by himself. He said that the hardest part was to add the patterns(模型). He used paper to fold some special patterns, such as xiangyun and dragons, and glued them to the chimes. 

Yang Zixing, in Grade 7, is crazy about Chinese ancient weapons(武器), so he made a halberd(戟). He tried hard to colour the halberd. He made the main body green, gold and blue and added some black to the side of the halberd to make it look real. 

In this show, students not only showed their talents for art but also had a chance to enjoy the art and culture of ancient China. 

 Sometimes, it's great fun to show people that they are important through some acts of kindness. My daughter Cindy, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}eight- year- old girl, was kind of shy in the past, {#blank#}2{#/blank#}one thing made her very active and outgoing. 

I still remember the thing that happened to her clearly. Last month, Cindy felt {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( comfortable), so I took her to see the doctor. While we were waiting in line outside the waiting room, we saw a lady standing just beside {#blank#}4{#/blank#}( we). She looked very worried. I had never seen her before, so I said nothing to her. However, Cindy gave a smile card to the lady, saying"I hope everything goes well to you. " It brought tears to her eyes. The lady hugged Cindy but said nothing. Later, Cindy gave out five more smile{#blank#}5{#/blank#}( card) to people that day. 

 Last Monday, I went shopping in a supermarket. I was in a hurry, so after I bought what I wanted, I went to the cashier(收银台) {#blank#}6{#/blank#} ( quick). To my {#blank#}7{#/blank#}( surprised), I couldn't find my wallet(钱包) and I didn't know what {#blank#}8{#/blank#} ( do). At that time, a lady came to me and paid the bill {#blank#}9{#/blank#} me. Oh, she was the lady who was outside the waiting room that day. I said" thank you" to her. She said, "I was moved by your daughter's kindness. "

 Everyone in our family {#blank#}10{#/blank#} ( enjoy) helping others since then, and smile cards are a good tool to do more. Of course, what we have done has changed my daughter.
