Mr. and Mrs. Green were very worried about their son, Daniel. He was born normal (正常) in every other way,1 seemed to be dumb (哑的). Mr. and Mrs. Green tried everything to get him to 2, but with no success.

    When Daniel was six years old, the best doctors in the town examined (检查) him3, but could find nothing wrong. And he seemed to be smart. It was just that he 4 spoke.

    “There might be something wrong with his 5, and he doesn't know he's able to speak,” one doctor said.

    “But he can read and write,” said Mr. Green, “We've written him notes, telling him to speak some day.”

Ray was thought to be a strange boy. One day when he was flying his kite, he said to himself," Did anybody ever try to fly a kite at night? I think it must be very fun. But the kite can't be seen in the dark. What if I tie a light to it? That would be really good. I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(try) it tonight."

As soon as it was dark, he {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(take) his kite and lantern, and went to a large field about a mile from his home. He tied the lantern to the tail of his kite. The lantern {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(make) of paper. The kite flew higher and higher. He tied the string (线)to a tree, and then he stood there, staring at his kite. It floated (飘) high up into the air. How wonderful! While Ray {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(enjoy) his special kite, some people in the village also saw it.

"Look! A light{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (fly) in the sky," one person said. "It can't be a light," said a man.

"Perhaps it's a big firefly (萤火虫) ,"said another,

"Maybe it's a comet (彗星),"said another man.

"How strange!" said a boy.

"Let's find out what this strange light{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (be)," the last one said. Then they went to the field.

Ray, who had gotten tired of standing, was sitting behind a tree. He{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (see) the men as they came, but they didn't see him. When they reached under the light, and saw what it was, they looked at each other and said, "There is nothing unusual {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(happen)! This is just a trick of some naughty boys, but it {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (fool) us all.

Let's keep the secret. "Then they laughed and went back to the village. When the men had gone, Ray thought it was time for him {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(go), so he went home, too. When his mother heard what he had done, she hardly knew whether to laugh or scold (责备), but just told him to go to bed.

Long ago, a little boy was walking through a park. In the middle of the park there was a 1 with a sign on it. The  2 said, "I am a magic tree. Say the magic words and you will see."

The boy tried to 3 the magic words. He tried "open" "hurry", and many more, but none of them worked.

Tired and upset, the boy 4 out, "This is too difficult. Please, dear tree!" Suddenly, a big 5 opened at the bottom of the tree. He came in. Inside everything was 6 . He couldn't see anything except for a sign. The sign said, "Carry on with your magic." Then the boy said, "That is a good idea. 7 , dear tree!" With this, the inside of the tree lit up 8 and showed a road. The road led to a 9 full of toys and chocolates.

The little boy brought all his friends to the magic tree and they had the best party ever in the room. This is why people always say that "10 " and " thank you" are the magic words.

Shortly after I arrived in France, my phone was stolen. 

I was taking a trip by 1 . After knowing my phone was gone and I had missed the last train into the city, I 2 to spend the night at the train station. The workers there were very kind, assuring (向……保证) me their country was 3 . However, I still felt a little 4 and didn't want to take the bus in the dark. 

The next day, I arrived in Paris and reached the hotel at 8 am. At the front desk, a man 5 my story. Being 6 , he wanted to show me that Paris was a great city. He gave me his phone number after only 7 me for 20 minutes. He told me that 8 my visit to the Louvre the next day, I should call him so that he and his friend could 9 and show me around.

His friend spoke poor English, but was very 10 . They took me to the best cultural places in Paris. They acted as my guides 11 I had no map. They provided me with a lot of 12 that I would have never known if I had been on my own—or on my phone! 

They even took me to try traditional French food, like crepes, and didn't let me 13 anything. They were so kind and caring and we 14 became close friends. It's safe to say that the 15 of the trip was not so good, but I had the best experience in Paris and would love to go back!
