Hans Christian Andersen (安徒生) was born in a poor {#blank#}1{#/blank#}^.He was very interested in arts {#blank#}2{#/blank#}he was a little boy. At the age of 14, he left his hometown and started a new life {#blank#}3{#/blank#}a singer, dancer, and actor in a big city. However, he wasn't successful at first and became very {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Later in his life, Andersen {#blank#}5{#/blank#}a lot of money from a rich person and he used it to go to university and entered the world of {#blank#}6{#/blank#}Andersen's first book of fairy tales (童话故事), which was published in 1835, sold very well, so he {#blank#}7{#/blank#} writing stories. In his whole life, he wrote many fairy tales {#blank#}8{#/blank#} he died in 1875.Andersen's fairy tales were not only for young children {#blank#}9{#/blank#} also for people of all ages. Because these stories are touching and easy to understand, they are{#blank#}10{#/blank#} very popular today.

Pam: China is famous for tea, right?

Liu: Yes, both in the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}and now.

Pam: Where is tea produced in China?

Liu: Well, in many different areas. For example, Anxi and Hangzhou are {#blank#}2{#/blank#}known for their tea.

Pam: How is tea produced?

Liu: Well, as {#blank#}3{#/blank#}as I know, tea plants are grown on the sides of mountains. When the leaves are ready, they are picked by hand and then are sent for {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

Pam: What happens next?

Liu: The tea is packed and sent to many different countries and places around China.

Pam: It seems that many people all over the world drink {#blank#}5{#/blank#}tea.

Liu: Yes, people say that tea is good for both health and business!

    Until the early twentieth century, it was always unsuccessful to transfuse blood（输血） from one person to another person. Then in 1901, Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian scientist, discovered that there are four types of blood. These four blood types were named A, B, AB, and O. People have one of these four types. Blood type O is the most{#blank#}1{#/blank#} around the world because the number of the people with type O is the largest, while type AB is the least. If people with type A blood are given type B blood,  or people with type B blood are given type A blood,  they will{#blank#}2{#/blank#} die. Karl Landsteiner's research made it possible to be sure that people who need blood get the correct type.

    The study of blood didn't stop. In 1972, a Japanese doctor, Furukawa Takeji, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} another research about blood. And he came up with the idea that it was possible to tell one person's {#blank#}4{#/blank#}only by his blood type, which can help you know about the person quickly.

    Many years ago, there was a family named Franklin. They lived in Boston. There were five girls and six boys in the family. On a January day in 1706 another baby was born. The boy's mother and her husband gave the boy a {#blank#}1{#/blank#} —Benjamin. Benjamin was the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} of all the children. He could read when he was five and he could write when he was seven. The next year his parents sent him to {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. At school Benjamin was good at reading and writing, but not good at math. He read all of his father's {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. And when he had money, he {#blank#}5{#/blank#} went to buy books. He liked books. They told him {#blank#}6{#/blank#} to do something. The boy liked to use his head and tried to {#blank#}7{#/blank#} ways to help people enjoy life more. For example, he tried to know if there was some way to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} farther, maybe with something on his hands or feet. Slowly a picture of swimming shoes, or paddles, grew in his {#blank#}9{#/blank#}. The paddles must be neither too{#blank#}10{#/blank#} nor too small. And they must be neither too heavy nor too light. At last he invented the paddle for swimming.
