What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects(建筑师) believe that they are all possible. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.

     Two children stood outside the door with old coats. “Any old papers, Lady?” asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say no, but I saw that their shoes were broken and wet. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot tea.” They came in, saying nothing. Their shoes left snow on the floor.

      I gave them tea and bread to protect them against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started my housework again.

      The silence in the front room surprised me. I looked in.

      The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked me in a low voice, “Lady, are you rich?”

      Am I rich? Oh, no! I looked at my old things in my room.

      The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟) carefully. “Your cups match your saucers.”

They left then, holding their papers against the wind. They hadn't said thank you. They didn't need to. They had done more than that. The blue cups and saucers were simple. But they said that they matched. The potatoes and meat before me, a roof over our hands, my husband with a job—these things matched, too.

      I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The prints of their small shoes were still wet on my floor. I let them be. I wanted them there to remind (提醒) me how rich I was.

    A beautiful and very successful actress played the lead role in a new musical show. Her home was in the countryside, but she did not want to go back there every night, so she bought an expensive house in the centre of the city, she got some beautiful furniture(家具) and had a man to paint the rooms in new colours.

    It was very difficult to get tickets for her show, because everybody wanted to see it. So she decided to give the painter two of the best seats. She hoped that this would make him work better for her. He took the tickets without saying anything, and she heard no more about them until the end of the month, when she got the painter's bill (帐单). At the bottom of it were these words: “Four hours watching Miss Hall sing and dance : 3 pounds,” with this note: “ After 5 p.m. I get 15 shillings (先令) an hour instead of 10 shillings.”

My name is Susan. I am a student of Green Middle School. It's a nice and beautiful school. Here is a map of it. 

Look at the map of our school. This is the music hall, just across from the science building. The music hall is a yellow building with two floors. We often listen to music in it. Sometimes, we have music lessons in it too. The science building is yellow too. A small shop is between the science building and the teachers' building. We can buy many kinds of school things in it. The teachers' building is white. Our teachers often correct (批改) our homework or prepare (准备) lessons in it. Behind the teachers' building is the school hall. It's new and nice. We often have parties or speeches (演讲) in it. A large sports field is next to the school hall. All the students go there and do exercises together in the morning. Every Monday we raise the flag there. The classroom building is across from the school hall and the sports field. We spend most of the time in our classroom. It's big and clean. 

I love my school. It's a beautiful place and I can learn a lot in it.
