Harry and Annie live a mile from the town, but they walk there to school every day. It is a pleasant walk around the pond* on their way to school. In winter, when the ice is thick and hard, they go across the pond. But their mother doesn't like them to do it unless* someone is with them.

"Don't go across the po nd today, children,"she says, as she kisses them goodbye one morning."It is    beginning to thaw."

"All right, mother,"says Harry, not very happy, for he likes running and skating on the ice very much.

When they come to the pond, the ice looks hard and safe.

"There,"Harry says to his sister,"Let's skate over it."

"But you promise mother,"says Annie.

"No, I don't. I only say‘All right', and it is all right."

"I don't say anything, so I can do as I like,"says Annie.

So they step on the ice and start to go across the pond.

They don't go far before the ice melts*, and suddenly they fall into the water.

A man who is at work near the po nd hears the children asking for help and rushes into the water to save them. They are almost drowned * before the man can reach them.

They get home almost frozen* and learn a lesson they will remember for a lifetime.

A horse fair was an interesting place. There were young horses and many beautiful horses from the country. But there were also a lot of poor and thin horses.

At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds for me, but the salesman refused. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked away. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said, "I'll give you 24 pounds to buy him."

"Done," said the salesman. "He's an excellent horse and if you want him for cab (出租马车) work, he can help you earn more than you pay for him. The horse is well worth the price."

Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small and old houses.

My owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a woman, a little girl and a boy came out.

"Is he gentle, Dad?"

"Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a little cat. And you can pat him."

Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a comfortable, clean room, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking "I'm going to be very happy here".

My new owner's name was Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, Harry and Dolly. The next morning they came to see me. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.

"Let's call him ‘Jack', after the old horse, shall we, Harry?" said Dolly.

"Yes, sounds great!" said Harry.

The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse, was very hard. The noise, the people and the traffic on the streets scared me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped me a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn't whip (鞭打) me.

He kept me very clean, and gave me as much food as I wanted. But the best thing was that I had Sundays off.

Hello, I'm Tom. I go to McDonald's farm today. There is a vegetable garden and a fruit garden on the farm. First I go to the vegetable garden. The potatoes are big and brown. The tomatoes are red, yellow and green. They are tasty (美味的). The green beans are so long and green. Then I go to the fruit garden. The watermelons are so big and sweet. The strawberries are red and sweet. But the grapes are green and small, they are not ready. There is an animal field, too. There are white horses and black horses. Look! Are those ducks? No, they aren't. They are hens. The hens are fat. I can see fourteen sheep over there. They baa and baa (咩咩叫) everywhere. The farm is so fun. I like it very much. 

Bruce is a boy from the UK. He has a pet 1 called Floppy. Bruce plays with Floppy every day. They are like good friends. They are 2 to each other. 

It's Tuesday morning. Bruce has a sore throat (喉痛) and can't 3 a word. 

"Bruce isn't 4 now," Bruce's mom says. "He lost his voice (声音)."

"Let" s take him to the doctor," Bruce's dad says. 

"Can I help Bruce 5 his voice?" Bruce's dog Floppy thinks. 

Bruce and his parents go to see the doctor, and Floppy comes to Bruce's 6 . He first looks at the table and sees a phone on it. Then, the phone rings (响起铃声). Floppy gets the phone, and a voice says, "7 ? Is that Bruce?"

"Oh, Bruce's voice isn't here," Floppy thinks. 

Then, he8 the bookcase. He sees some books and a black CD player. 

"Is Bruce's voice in it?" Floppy thinks. Then he plays the CD, but there is no voice. 

"Where is Bruce's voice? Is it under the bed?" Floppy thinks and goes on looking for it. 

At this time, Bruce comes home with his 9 and he feels much better now. 

"Floppy. I'm back," Bruce calls. 

"Haha, Bruce found his voice, "Floppy thinks and runs to Bruce happily. They can play10 again.
