2) English people like DIY. There is a saying in UK—“As Englishman's home is his castle”. Huge numbers of people spend their holidays making their homes beautiful “castles”. If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people have discovered the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. With the economic downturn at present, many people cannot afford a big house. They are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.
3) DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture which people need to get together themselves with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can't understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are simple and clear, but the furniture itself is difficult to build. One thing is for sure, though most DIY projects are started with the best intentions. Many of them may not get finished. DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical should be done by a professional worker. Unluckily, many people don't care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year over 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in UK, including 41,000 who fell off ladders.
4) Therefore, DIY can bring us fun and help us save money, but it is not always as easy as it is thought to be if we bite off more than we can chew. Maybe factories should make products that are easier and safer for us to DIY.

    A month ago the Brown family, who lived in Lyndhurst, had a special experience. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} She was making coffee while her husband, Frank, was watching a comedy program on television. Upstairs(在楼上) their young daughter, Ruth, was asleep in her room and their son, Mark, was doing some homework on his computer. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} However, at the end of the afternoon, it started to change. Soon, it began to rain very heavily. Tina looked out of the kitchen window and saw big storm clouds in the sky.     "How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly way people in the United States greet each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question that often doesn't have an answer.

    When a person meets a friend on the street and asks "How are you?", he only expects to hear the answer "Fine." even if the other person isn't! The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine." isn't really an answer. They are simple ways of greeting people and saying "Hello".

    Sometimes, people also don't say directly what they mean. For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person might be thinking "No, I disagree." But it isn't very polite to answer so directly, so the other person might say. "I'm not so sure." It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.

    People also don't say directly what they are thinking when they finish conversations with others. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says, "I've got to go now." Often, the person who wants to hang u gives an excuse: "Someone's at the door." "Something is burning on the stove!" The excuse might be real, or it might not be. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't very polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.

    Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion， or ending a conversation, people often don't say directly what they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's all part of the game of language!

    We are often educated to have the courage, but we also need to understand "fear" correctly. "Fear" also has the meaning of "awe (敬畏)". If a person has no respect (尊敬) or awe, it will surely bring trouble to the family, to the society and the country. So, how should we do?

    Fear life. Life is the only one. The fear of life will make us value life more. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Fear the law. No rules, no standards. Follow the order, rules of the society, schools and public places. Know the law and understand the law. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Whoever breaks the law can't run away from punishment.
