Working in Africa, one day we went to an orphanage (孤儿院). There we met a lovely little girl named Tanzile. I gave her a sweet I brought. “She 1 one more, doctor,” said the nurse. I said “Of course.” and gave her 2.

    Before we left, we went to say 3 to Tanzile. She was holding the sweets I had given her.

    I said to the nurse, “This little girl is clever. She has taken two sweets for herself.”4 after the nurse asked her some questions, we learned the 5 about Tanzile.

    Tanzile was 7 then. Two years before, her mom and dad had both died of AIDS. Her baby sister was taken away from her. From then on, whenever she  6 anything from people, including food, she refused to accept unless they gave her two — one for her and one for her 7.

    In fact, in her room, we found quite a few old things which she  8 38   to give her sister one day.

    Later that day, I was 9 to find that this was not an isolated (个别的) story. There were many orphans just like Tanzile. With a lot of things in their rooms, they 10 for their brothers and sisters who they hadn't seen for so long.

    People sometimes think African children are different from our kids. They think that the children there don't feel pain or sadness or love. But that is not true. Their pain is deep. And so is their love.

A Meaningful Gift

    Emily was an eight grader. To pass her Civics course（公民课程）,she had to do some volunteer service in a nursing home for a week.

    One Monday, Emily went to the nursing home after school. When she arrived, she was told she would1an hour every weekday with an elderly lady, Mrs. Blair. She was then led into a room, where an old lady in a flowery dress was sitting on a sofa.

    Emily2awkwardly（别扭地） in front of the lady. She cleared her throat and said,“Good afternoon. I'm Emily.”

    “Good afternoon, Emily. Take a seat,please,”Mrs. Blair replied.

    Then,3filled the space between them. Emily wondered what to say.

    “Tell me about yourself,Emily,”Mrs. Blair said suddenly.

    “Well,” Emily started, “I don't have any grandparents, so I can't relate to elderly people much. I love the performing arts. I'm here mainly because I have to 4here to get a good grade for my Civics class.”Mrs. Blair didn't seem to5.Many people, especially teens, don't seem to care about old people like me. Now you're here, and I'm going to change that about you. Ask me anything.”

    Emily thought for a moment, and finally decided, “What was your job?”

    “I was a Broadway star in the 1950s,”Mrs. Blair answered.

    “Cool! Can you tell me about it?” Emily asked, amazed.

    Mrs. Blair smiled. “Back then, only the lead actress had the honor to wear a 6bracelet. I was the lead in almost all of the plays, so I always wore the bracelet. Till this day, I still have it.”

    Emily smiled along with Mrs. Blair and listened to the other stories, attentively. She had become so interested in Mrs. Blair's7that she decided to come earlier the next day.

    Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday passed by quickly. Then came Friday. As she was leaving, Emily was really8to say goodbye.

    “Don't be sad. You can still visit me,” Mrs. Blair comforted her. She then handed a small box to Emily, “It's my gift to you.”

    Emily9opened the box and was surprised to see what was inside. “It's the bracelet that you wore. Thank you!” Emily said, with tears in her eyes. “I'm sure to visit you whenever I'm free.”

    On her way home, Emily thought of her own love for the performing arts. She touched the bracelet and made a10that she would keep her word to Mrs. Blair.

    Wang Hui and Daming are good 1. Daming is 2 Beijing and Wang Hui 3from Shanghai. 4 are twelve years old. Daming is 5 Class Two. Wang Hui is in6, too. Their English teacher is Miss Li. 7 is a good teacher.

    Daming 8 football and Wang Hui likes basketball. Wang Hui can swim, but Daming 9. Look ! Daming is 10 football. Wang Hui is playing basketball .

    A Seeing Eye dog is very special. One1thing about having a Seeing Eye dog is that you can go anywhere in the city safely.

    I live in Barcelona, Spain. It's a big2, and there are many cars, but my dog Terra goes everywhere3me and doesn't let me get hit by a car. Terra also guides me to walk safely in the subway.

    I have a baby boy, so another good thing is that my dog watches out for4 , too. I can put the baby in his stroller, and Terra makes sure we are5okay. I have had Terra for ten years, and I'm happy to have it.

    That day was like any other day in his life. After school Michael walked past the shop in the street corner. He stopped to1the front row of shoes, and he felt sorry for himself. He2wanted to have a pair of shoes for his birthday.

    He walked away sadly and thought of what to tell his mother. He knew she would give him 3if she could. But he also knew very well she had 4money. He decided not to go home 5, as he looked worried and his mother would notice it. So he went to the park and sat down on the grass. Then he saw a boy in a wheel chair. He noticed that the boy moved the wheels with his hands. Michael looked at him carefully and was 6to see that the boy had no feet. He looked 7at his own feet. "It is 8better to be without shoes than 9feet." he thought. There was no reason for him to 10so sorry and sad. He went away and smiled, thinking he was more lucky in his life.
