I was born in a poor village in Uganda. I spent the 1 days of my childhood there. My mother died when I was born. My father never cared about me, which 2 me to leave when I was ten. For the next three years, I helped people do something and they provided me with shelter and food 3 . Luckily, a 4 family paid for me to go to school. For the first time after leaving home, I felt 5 . Then, I attended school and got a job. I always 6 to help children in need. Yet I 7 felt I could do something more.

In 2016, I got passed to be a foster (收养) parent. By the end of 2019, ten kids had filled my house. In 2020, I got a call from a center for 8 children. When asked if I could take Anthony, I 9 it because ten kids were all I could do with. 10 , I was talked into taking Anthony just for the weekend. I didn't ask about his situation 11 .

Anthony arrived that night, "Can I call you Dad?" he asked.

"No." I needed to keep my 12 .

Monday morning a worker in the center came to 13 Anthony. From their talk, I learned he had been 14 three times, but nobody would take him in.

Looking at Anthony, I saw something that made me think of the 15 boy I had once been. "I'll take him in," I said.

I was shocked when my socially awkward sister, who had suffered from Asperger Syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症), decided to sing in front of the school. I knew she would 1 me in some way, so I protested. However, my parents insisted that she 2 and I would have to be part of the audience. I silently hoped that something would happen to 3 me from watching her losing face.

As I waited in the hall, sweat 4 my forehead. I comforted myself that no one knew she was my sister and tried to persuade myself that it would be 5 . The lights darkened and the 6 opened to reveal (使露面) my sister standing alone on stage. She seemed 7 , taking a minute to stammer (结结巴巴地说) her name and class. 8 began to be heard in the audience.

I shifted nervously in my seat, afraid what was about to happen. But as my sister started to sing, I was 9 . Her voice flowed effortlessly and melodiously, filling the hall with its 10 . I watched in wonder, realizing I had never known she could sing so 11 . I listened carefully to the lyric (歌词) she had written herself, feeling ashamed for doubting her 12 . My heart gave way as I heard the heartfelt words.

 In that moment, guilt and shame flooded my heart. 13 my unwillingness to support her, she had never taken anything that I had done to her to heart. It was then that I determined to love her 14 . It was as if a veil (面纱) had been 15 from my eyes, and my heart was full.

Several years ago, my company experienced a slowdown in business. We hoped that it was only 1 . We had work enough for only four days of the week. So we decided that we would work from Monday to Thursday, and take Fridays to do 2 projects in our hometown. 

One day, we went to a very old gentleman's 3 to do a total clean-up. When we arrived, an elderly woman 4 us at the door. We thought she was the wife, but it turned out that she was the 5 . She was 75, and her father 97! Soon, we began to clean the house and the yard. It was 6 how much work a group could get done when everyone was working 7 . That gentleman's house went from dirt to a sparkling clean palace by the time we finished. 

The thing I most remember about that day, 8 , was not the great cleaning job that we did, but something 9 . When we walked into the house, I noticed the wonderful drawings that 10 the walls. The daughter told us that her father had 11 them, and that he hadn't

12 art until he was 80 years old. I was 13 : these drawings were works of art that could have easily been hanging in a museum. At the time, I was in my early 30s and wanted to do something that would use my creative and artistic competence more than being president of a company would 14 . I had felt that it was too difficult to make a change at this "advanced" stage of my life. Boy! My 15 belief system got expanded that afternoon!

Culture and tradition are the soul of a country. When a country 1 them, it is difficult for it to make 2 . Chinese culture can be seen everywhere in China. 3 , I did not really understand it in the beginning. Then I realized I had to 4 something in order to understand it.

Last winter I decided to stay at our university to 5 all the activities organized for foreign students to celebrate the Spring Festival.

The 6 began a month ago with the decorating of our rooms with Spring Festival couplets (对联) and New Year paintings. On February 10, we 7 an activity to write Spring Festival couplets. When I saw the brush, I became 8 . Why is there such a pen? How do we use it?

After understanding the tools, we started our creative 9 . I tried to hold the brush and start writing 10 , but the tip of the pen was too 11 and I couldn't grasp it at all. I was 12 , but I didn't give up. After several 13 , I wrote a line of words. At this time, I found that my sleeves were dirtied with ink as I was too 14 practicing. Even so, I was very happy, because I felt that I had learned the essence (精髓) of writing calligraphy.

Through this activity, I came to 15 the amazing Chinese culture more.

This year, the Music Educator Award, presented by the Recording Academy and Grammy Museum, went to Annie Ray, the performing arts department chair and orchestra director at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. She attended the awards ceremony in Los Angeles and brought home both a $10,000 prize and matching grant （资助） for her school's music program.

Ray created the Crescendo Orchestra for students with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as a parent orchestra that teaches nearly 200 caregivers a year to play the same instrument as their children. She got the idea mostly from the Annandale community, which she says represents over 60 countries, including many refugees and immigrants. "There're many cultures that might typically clash, but they come together in this very beautiful harmony," Ray explained. "And that's really uniquely expressed in the orchestra classroom, where we're just all music-ing together."

Ray says the Crescendo Orchestra is focused on teaching students how to play an instrument, through one-on-one instruction tailored to their needs. The orchestra is about much more than just making music, however. "I really push my students to be brave and go outside of their comfort zone. We have to learn how to work together with others," she says.

Ray, who comes from a family of musicians and has played the harp （竖琴） since the age of five, knows firsthand the impact that a great teacher can make on their students. "Why I am where I am is because a teacher changed my life and made me want to be a music educator," she says.

Ray says her warm reception on the awards ceremony is especially meaningful because not many people understand what exactly music educators do in the classroom or how much their work matters. She says that lack of understanding is one of the biggest challenges facing the profession in general. Moreover, she says her school desperately needs new instruments, and adds that she'll use some of her grant money to buy more.

Growing up in poverty in rural Kenya,Nelly Cheboi watched her single mother work tirelessly so she could attend school. 

From an early age,she realized that her family,along with others like hers in their village, was1 a cycle that left them little hope. Cheboi attended college.2 a scholarship in the United States,worked odd jobs to support her family,and discovered her3 for computer science. She4 the success in finding jobs to her computer literacy. She knew she wanted to share it with her5 back home. 

Today,she's giving 4,000 kids the chance for a6 future through her nonprofit, TechLit Africa. The organization uses recycled7 to create technology labs in schools in rural Kenya. 

In 2018,she began8 recycled computers. She started small,carrying the machines to Kenya and9 customs fees and taxes herself. TechLit Africa now works with shipping companies to10 the donated computers so it's more cost11 . The donated hardware is12 to partner schools in rural Kenya,where students aged 4 to 12 receive daily classes and13 opportunities from professionals and gain skills that will help improve their education and prepare them for future jobs. 

"My hope is that when the first TechLit kids graduate from high school,they're able to get a job online14 they will know how to code,"Cheboi said. "The world is your oyster when you are educated. By bringing the resources,by bringing these skills,we are15 the world to them. "
