It was a hot summer day. Mr. Lee was in bed and was trying to go to sleep when he heard the doorbell {#blank#}1{#/blank#} . He turned {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the light and looked at his clock. It was twelve o'clock."Who can it be at this time of night?"he thought. So he got up and went to the door. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} he opened the door, there was nobody,"That is very strange."Then he went back to his room, got back into bed, turned off the light{#blank#}4{#/blank#} tried to go to sleep.

A few minutes {#blank#}5{#/blank#} , the bell rang again. Mr. Lee jumped out of bed very fast and rushed to the door. He opened {#blank#}6{#/blank#} , but again he found no one there.He closed the door, making himself calm down and trying not to be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} . Then he saw a piece of paper on the floor. He {#blank#}8{#/blank#} it up in surprise. There were some {#blank#}9{#/blank#}on it,"It's now after midnight, so it is April Fool's Day. April fool to you!""Oh, it was the English boy {#blank#}10{#/blank#} door!"

"What a naughty boy he is!"Mr. Lee said to himself.

Jane was a young girl. She loved to see the negative side of life.

Once, her father took her to the kitchen. He asked Jane to take a potato, an egg1 two spoons of tea leaves. Jane was 2 , and asked her father, "Do you want me to cook?"

"No," her father said.

He then took three pots and 3 some water into each pot. The pots were placed on the stove. Once the water started to boil, he dropped the potato in a pot, egg in 4 one and the tea leaves in the third one.

"Why are you doing all these things?" Jane felt puzzled and asked.

"You'll get the answer in fifteen minutes" said her father.

The impatient daughter tried her best 5  for around 15 minutes.

Now, he placed the two plates, one with the potato and 6 with the egg, and the cup of tea in front of Jane.

Jane asked, "What does it mean, father? I don't understand!"

"Each object faced similar adversities（不幸）, but reacted（反应）7 . After we put the potato into boiling water, it became very weak. The soft egg became very hard 8 we put it in boiling water. And the tea leaves changed the water itself, giving it a nice smell. 9  fantastic it is!"

Jane understood that we could create 10 new even when we experienced adversities.

Tears went out of my eyes when I talked to my mum on the phone. It was 7:30 in the evening, she was still{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (work) in the fields. These are my parents. They are always working hard. My father works from seven in the morning{#blank#}2{#/blank#}nine in the evening. And my mum is much {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (busy) than him because all the housework is left to her. Besides, she also has to look after the vineyard（葡萄园）.

Every day she gets up early at 4:00 in the morning, and keeps on {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (work) till evening. One day I called her at eight in the evening. She said, " I've just got home {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the vineyard and I haven't {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (have) supper yet. I am washing the clothes now."

Although they are busy and tired, they forget it as soon as I appear. For them, the happiest time is to be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} me. Once my mum saw me walking towards home, she cried{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (happy). Whenever I go back home, she always runs into the kitchen {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (cook) something delicious for me. 

Dear mum and dad, I am your hope. I'll take more exercise to keep {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(health). I will study harder to be excellent at school. 

Love, sometimes, doesn't need many words. Love your parents as they love you. Give them a call and tell them you miss them. 

Song Lian was a famous litterateur (文学家), historian and thinker in the late Yuan Dynasty (朝 代) and early Ming Dynasty.

Song Lian loved reading. But he was from a poor family, he could not afford to buy books. He borrowed books from others and returned them on time. He never broke his promise. One day, Song Lian went to borrow books from Mr. Liu who was a rich man. But he never lent books to strangers easily. Mr. Liu thought Song Lian was a hard-working man so he agreed to lend Song Lian a book. Song Lian told Mr. Liu he would return it in three days. Mr. Liu thought for a while and said nothing. Finally, Song Lian borrowed the book home.

After he returned home, Song Lian couldn't wait to start reading. He didn't go out to play and stayed up to read.

Finally, on the third morning, Song Lian left early and returned the book to Mr. Liu. Mr. Liu was very happy and praised Song Lian for his integrity (诚信). It's great to be a person with knowledge, but it's more important to be a person who keeps his promise.

Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1700 London had no policemen at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid much. 

About 300 years ago, London was starting to get bigger. More and more people went to live and work there. However, there were many thieves in the streets, so most people wanted to stay in their homes as much as possible. 

In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen, but they were called "Bow Street Runners" because they worked just near Bow Street. Fifty years later, there were 120 Bow Street Runners, but London became very big and needed more policemen. 

In 1829, the first London Police Force was started with 3, 000 officers. Most of the men worked on foot, but a few rode horses. And until 1920 all the police in London were men. 

Today London Police are quite well paid and for the few police officers who still ride horses, the pay is even better than for the others. 

Life is like the four seasons. Now I am very old, but when I am young, it is the spring of my life. I play a lot, and I grow bigger and bigger day by day. There are sweet days and heartbroken (心碎的) days. Some days the sun shines. I have a good job. I am strong and happy. Then I marry (结婚) and have a child. In those days, I am busy and work hard. I start to get gray hair. It's the summer of my life and it passes quickly.

Then the days get shorter. Leaves fall down from the trees. My child is a university（大学） student and then an engineer. My home is much quieter. I start walking more slowly. One day I leave my job, and I retire. I have more time. I know this is my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change colour and give people delicious fruit. But the days are getting shorter and colder. Winter comes. I am older and weaker. I know I do not have many days, so I will enjoy them to the end.
