Table Talk

As we got out of the car, our son announced, "Phones stay in the car."

"Why do you always have to tell us that?" complained our fifteen-year-old grandson.

Our son's wife winked at us and then explained, "We have a family1 that no one may bring anything electronic to the table."

We 2 our phones in the car. Even though the restaurant was filled with families, there was little noise. All I heard were a few quiet conversations and the ding of forks on plates. The 3 unnerved me. I looked around. Everyone, even the young kids, was 4 at some kind of screen. 

The silence was broken when the six of us sat down, and started talking. The waitress stood patiently and waited for our orders. When our food came, we continued to chat. 

An elderly couple at the next table were finishing their dinners and conversing quietly. I noticed that they shot us a few glances, and wondered if our constant chatter was annoying them. 

After the dessert, my son signaled the waitress for the check. She hesitated when she brought the black folder to our table. My son opened the black folder — it was5 . "You forgot the check," he told her.

"There isn't one. Someone else6 your bill — and the tip too." she said with a giggle (咯咯笑).

"Why?" asked our son, his wife and myself at once.

"They loved it that no one was connected." she continued. "They loved watching you guys7 . The old lady went on and on about how nice it was to see a family eating and talking instead of looking at ‘electric games'."

For a moment, everyone at our table was at a loss for8 . Then we all started talking at once. My son's voice rose above the others. "Where are they? We want to thank them."

"They left after you ordered dessert," the waitress replied.

We spent the next fifteen minutes discussing this goodness and camp up with a 9 . Next time we see a family eating at a restaurant 10 looking at anything electronic, we'll pay it forward, just like what happened to us.

It was the end of the school day, and I was tired. I grabbed a pile of about 130 exam papers to1 on the train ride home. I'd bring them back the next morning.

My principal (校长) pushed her head into my classroom and said, "Friendly2 ! You need to make sure your word wall is3 by tomorrow morning." She then moved on to the next classroom to4 the message. I sighed and thought, "Are you making a(n)5 ? What a waste of my time!"

My principal was6 about making our school beautiful, while my goal was to get my students to pass the Algebra Regents Exam. She wanted every classroom to have a word wall, where student's works on creative projects would be7 . She brought in beautiful planters (花盆) that8 the hallways with greenery. However, I assume that school and classroom9 aren't important when it comes to learning. To me, spending time and money making our school and classrooms beautiful was just a distraction (使人分心的事). Those things don't10 my students with math.

However, after three years of teaching, I went to graduate school in part to study how resources 11 teachers and students. What my research found 12 me: When teachers 13 their classroom environment resources, their students did better on standardized tests. My principal was 14 . She was creating more than just a beautiful 15 —she was building a welcoming and positive environment for students to learn and teachers to work.

We were about to gather up our things and return to our car when a man came up.He looked very 1 indeed and asked us 2 if we knew that these grounds were his own.Father looked troubled and the man 3 a notice,which said that camping was strictly 4 .My poor father explained that he had not seen the 5 and did not know that camping was not allowed.6 Father apologized,the man did not seem satisfied.He asked Father for his name and 7 .All the way home,we were so 8 that hardly anyone said a word.This 9 thing had spoiled(损害)a wonderful day in the country.

For the rest of the week,we 10 what would happen.The following Sunday,we stayed at home even though it was a 11 day.About noon,a large and very expensive 12 stopped outside our house.We were surprised when we saw several people preparing to have a picnic in our small 13 .Father got very 14 and went to ask them what they thought they were doing.You can imagine how 15 he was when he saw the man who had taken our address the week before!Both men burst out 16 and Father welcomed the strangers into the house.We became good 17 .And we learned a lesson we have never 18 .That's "Don't do to others 19 you don't like to 20 to you."

For the past 18 years, my daughter has been around me all the time. Now that she is in college, the 1 of our relationship has totally changed and our relationship is completely 2 . I'm not going to be there every morning to have breakfast with her. I won't know when she's mad or when she's happy. Here's a little story of our new 3 .

A week ago, my daughter wanted to 4 so she called me during the day as I was in meetings. I 5 her later on, but she was in class. At midnight, she reached out 6 to ask if we could talk. Well, guess what? I was 7 . I thought we would talk the next day, but she was not 8 ... 

Research shows that parents are 9 when their children are grown up, but for me that is when I start to get concerned. I am always left to 10 , how can I, as a parent, remain 11 to my daughter to guide, support and love through life's changes?

We may have to 12 the way we communicate. My daughter encouraged me to go digital. That's how I ventured into the world of social media, following her updates and occasionally sharing my own experiences. Through this 13 presence, the physical gap is 14 and I feel I still have an active role in her life.  This experience serves as a reminder that 15 , however scary, holds the promise of growth in our shared journey. 

 "Mommy!"I called over my shoulder. "Grace is here!" Our neighbor, Grace, stood on our front door holding a cardboard box. 

It took Mom a few minutes to get to the front door. At forty-two, her health wasn't good. She smiled at our next-door neighbor. "Come in and have a cup of coffee." "I can't stay, Nancy," Grace answered. "I just thought you all might be able to use some of this food. We get more at those giveaways than we can use." I felt relieved that Grace couldn't stay. She was friendly enough, but she and her husband drank a lot and they were given to loud arguments late at night. Sometimes, the police had to come and break up the fights. I was a little frightened of them. Grace placed the box on the kitchen table. Mom, who was not the sentimental type, got tears in her eyes."Grace! We can't take this."

Dad wandered in from the bedroom where he had been napping. He wasn't dealing very well with the unemployment at the processing plant. "We don't accept charity," he said. "Now, Jim," said Grace, "this is no time for your pride. You have two little girls and a sick wife to think of. This isn't charity. It's one neighbor helping another." I stood a little distance from the grownups, looking into each of their faces, wondering what was going to happen next. "I thank you kindly," Dad said at last.

When she was gone, we examined the contents of the box. It wasn't what we were used to. Mom smiled and said, "This will get us through for a couple of weeks." The gesture from Grace confused me because she wasn't family, or close friends with us. Even though I didn't like most of the food in that box, I knew there was something significant about this woman's generosity. She didn't have much to give, but she gave what she had at a time when our family needed help.

I always miss Grandma. Settled in the armchair, I often find myself 1  by the fond memories of my grandma. Her influence was as gentle as a summer breeze(微风), yet 2 . 

" Love, " she would say, " is the most 3  force in the world. " Her words were not just a lesson but a 4  light that led me through life's journey. She taught me to love 5 , to give selflessly, and to always find joy in the simple things. She effortlessly wove(编织) those 6  into the fabric of my being. 

Now, as I sit with my grandchildren, their eyes wide with 7 , I find myself recounting the  8  Grandma told me. I show them how to take care of the garden that Grandma once lovingly  9 , where each plant holds a tale of patience and growth. We bake cookies together, just as I did with Grandma, and I 10  as they embrace the joy and affection baking brings. 

The emotion of 11  swells in my heart as I realize the legacy(遗产)I now carry. Grandma's wisdom went beyond time, connecting generations and 12  the gap s that life presents. It's a legacy that I'm proud to 13  to my grandchildren. In this way, the love of a grandma becomes a timeless(永恒的)14 . 

As they grow, I hope they will remember the stories, the lessons, and the love. And one day, when they become 15  themselves, they will still remember the unique legacy of our family.
