Jazz is a type of music. Some people say that jazz is America's only true art form. That's because it began here. Hundreds of years ago, black people worked as slaves (奴隶) and made up songs to pass the time. It wasn't called jazz then, but the way the slaves were playing and singing music was special.

The music of America's black people began to be called jazz in the early 1900s.

What makes jazz special is improvisation (即兴创作). That means making the music up on the spot (当场). No music in front of you. No long discussion with other people in your band.

"It's free. It's beautiful," says Geoffrey, a sixth-grader at Stratford Landing Elementary School. Geoffrey is such a good musician that he has performed at the Kennedy Center.

Geoffrey says, "It's easy to express your feelings through jazz. You are more focused on being creative and using your imagination in jazz. "

Washington DC is a very important place in the history of jazz. It has a famous jazz piano player: Duke Ellington.

Born in Washington in 1899, Ellington as a child wanted to play baseball instead of the piano. But his parents played the piano, so he started playing the piano when he was seven years old.

In 1920, he played small shows at the Howard Theatre. When he was 24, he moved to New York, but he didn't forget his hometown. He called his band the Washingtonians and later he returned to perform at the Lincoln Theatre.

(1)、Did the music of America's black people begin to be called jazz in the early 1900s?
(2)、What does jazz improvisation mean?
(3)、What should you focus on when you play jazz according to Geoffrey?
(4)、Who is Duke Ellington?
(5)、What is the main idea of the passage?

The Chinese language has a history of 6,000 years. But Pinyin, which tells {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (we) how to read Chinese words correctly, is still young.

In 1958, Chinese linguist Zhou Youguang and his team made Pinyin. Before that, Chinese people used many other ways to show how to pronounce Chinese characters, but these ways couldn't be used as {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (easy) as Pinyin. Because of Pinyin, more people learn how to read. It is {#blank#}3{#/blank#} helpful system that improves Chinese language learning for all.

This year, Pinyin turns 66 years old. It {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (use) everywhere in our daily life. We learn to speak Putonghua with the help of Pinyin. We write Chinese words on {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (computer) by using Pinyin. It is also becoming a bridge {#blank#}6{#/blank#} China and the world. Many people around the world start to learn Chinese by learning Pinyi {#blank#}7{#/blank#} you may say "nihao" to mean "hello" to a foreign friend.

Now, many people in other countries are {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (interested) in using Pinyin than before. For example, fewer foreigners use "dumplings". They prefer to say "jiaozi". The Oxford English Dictionary has {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (hundred) of Chinese words in Pinyin, such as wanggou for "shopping online". Maybe one day, Pinyin will play a key role in {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (spread) the Chinese language.

"Robots, drones(无人机) and AI will do around 90% of the housework by 2040, " scientists from King's College said.

Mischa Dohler and Dr. Ian Pearson wrote a report to predict what homes will look like in 20 years. In it, they said that housework like washing the clothes and doing the dishes would be much easier because of technology progress(进步). If technology kept making progress, they expected that people would spend less than two hours a day in doing housework.

But most British people still don't believe their predictions. Just 2/5 of the people think that house robots will become a reality(现实) by 2040.

The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival in China when people light lanterns, set off fireworks, eat yuanxiao and enjoy family time. But do you know how this festival started?

In the Han Dynasty, there was a man named Dongfang Shuo who worked for the Emperor Wu of Han. One day, Dongfang met a crying maid(哭泣的宫女) named Yuanxiao in the emperor's garden. He asked her what happened. And the maid said she was sad because she couldn't see her family.

Dongfang promised to help Yuanxiao. He left the garden and went to the street. He started telling people that a big fire would happen on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It was the order of the Jade Emperor. Word spread quickly and people in the city were scared.

The Emperor Wu of Han heard of it and asked Dongfang for advice. Dongfang advised him to let Yuanxiao make glutinous rice(糯米) balls for the God of Fire to make him happy. He also advised everyone in the city to put up red lanterns and set off fireworks to create an illusion that the city was on fire. Seeing this, the Jade Emperor would not set fire.

On the special day, the city was full of people and lanterns Yuanxiao's parents were able to meet up with their daughter in the crowd. The city was safe, and the Emperor Wu of Han was happy. He ordered that every year on this day, people should make glutinous rice balls and hang lanterns.

From then on, the 15th day of the first lunar month has been called the Lantern Festival or Yuanxiao Jie. Since Yuanxiao cooked the best glutinous rice balls, people call the food yuanxiao or tangyuan.

Everyone wants to know what is out there in space. And almost everyone  {#blank#}1{#/blank#} of going to space one day. Since humans started sending spaceships to space, we've left space junk(太空垃圾) behind. Space junk is the name for any machine or pieces of spaceship left in space by humans. The junk mainly comes from spaceships we send into space, and it stays in space till it falls back to the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} .

Right now, there are around 2, 000 working satellites (卫星 ) in space and we are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} of it. But scientists also feel nervous about the other 3, 000 old and broken ones. That's because the space junk can be very dangerous if they hit the spaceships or  {#blank#}4{#/blank#} in space. They have to  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} away from the space junk to stay safe.

This  {#blank#}6{#/blank#} very terrible. To solve this problem, some companies have thought of new  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} for many years. One idea is to take away space junk from space and bring it back to the earth. And then, the junk will burn up(燃烧) in the air. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} this way, we can make sure there is less junk in space in the future.

However, it is very hard  {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the secrets to make it come true. At first, it needs high technology(科技). Also, many countries can't afford it. Someone thinks it is  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} for scientists to solve the problem because it is really difficult. But we believe in them and look forward to the day when this problem is solved.
