Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in Italy. He is best known as an artist today. One of his famous paintings is called Mona Lisa. However, Leonardo had many other natural abilities. He was also a great inventor. Many of his inventions have become important in modern daily life.

Although Leonardo hated war, he invented many different machines used for war. His most special invention was the machine gun, which was produced and used in war many years later.

    By watching the way birds fly, Leonardo tried to find out the secret of flying. Among his sketch (素描) we can see several objects. We consider them as modern flying machines.

    Leonardo spent many hours thinking about how to make good use of time. He developed ideas for labor-saving machines like cutting machines.

Leonardo was a strange man. He didn't eat any meat, which was very unusual in those times. He never published(发表) his ideas and scientific discoveries. He usually used mirror writing, which looks like writing in a mirror, starting from the right side of the page and moving to the left.

    We have very little of his work today. Leonardo finished only a few of his paintings. He left many unfinished because he thought they were not perfect. No one in his life time knew how great Leonardo was. We now believe, however, that he was one of the cleverest men the world has ever known.

There is such a story: In {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(古代的)times, there was a king who had two sons. He {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(邀请) famous teachers to teach them. After a few years, the king fell badly {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.(不健康的;有病的). So he wanted to choose one of his sons as the next king, but which one would be the right {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(人)? He thought it over for a whole night. At last, he decided to {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(测验;考查) his sons.

One day, he gave a room to each of them and said to them, "You must {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(填满;填充)the room with anything you wish. But there should be no space left and you can't ask for {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(建议) from anyone!" The next day the king and the {#blank#}8{#/blank#}.(王后) visited their elder son's room. The room was full of {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(软的;柔软的) grass. The king felt sorry about it. Then they went to the other room, but it was closed. Their younger son asked them to get in and closed the door again. It was dark everywhere, so the king shouted at him angrily. But suddenly the second son lit a candle. The room was full of light and it was {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(明亮的), The king felt very excited and hugged him.

He realised wisdom (智慧) is more valuable than simple answers that are easy to get.

Claude Monet brought sunshine into painting.

He was one of the first artists to work 1 . That may sound 2 to us today. But before 1870, most artists did all their paintings in rooms. They used models dressed up as Greek gods or heroes from history. They painted with dark colors so their pictures would look more 3 .

However, Monet and his artist friends 4 the rules. They took their paints and brushes to paint lakes, flowers and woods in the open air. They wanted to show 5 sunlight made water and boats look at different times during the day. If they painted people, they always painted common people. They used 6 colors and painted quickly. 

For years, Monet had 7 in making money. Sometimes he could not pay the rent (租金); sometimes his family had no heat; sometimes they went hungry. 8 , Monet would not give up.

Today, he is one of the most famous artists ever. Paintings by Monet sell for millions of dollars and 9 in museums around the world. We're all lucky that Monet never 10 .

Mount Tai is very famous in the world. Last Sunday, my parents took me there. In the morning, they woke me up early at about 5 o'clock. Because we didn't want the traffic to take up too much time. When we got there by bus.we climbed along the path at once. I felt thirsty and drank some water I could hardly walk any more after about one kilometer. My mother said. "Come on, my dear! Please look at the sights. They're very beautiful. But they look even more beautiful at the top of the mountain." Four hours later, we reached the top. From there we saw some strange shapes of large rocks. How beautiful Mount Tai is! My father said that it was wrong when I pulled a leaf off a plant. We should protect everything there. I think he is right.

We're still in Ireland. We arrived in Dublin four days ago. It was 1 ! My sister and I liked it a lot. Then yesterday, after lunch, Dad turned round to us and said, "We've got a 2 for you. Tonight our hotel is a castle (城堡)!" How 3 is that!

At the end of the journey, we stopped outside a real castle. A nice lady welcomed us and started to show us around 4 it was really big. What an amazing (惊人的) place! Can you believe that we walked up fifty stone steps to get to the living room?

The castle is over 600 years old, but it had 5 we needed. There was a bedroom for our parents and we each had a bedroom, too. But I didn't sleep very well last night. I felt so excited to be in a real castle! I 6 what life was like here in the past.

Jake was sitting all alone in the classroom during the break. He was thinking about the"C" he had received in his1 test. "I knew I was getting it when I was taking the test, but I just can't help feeling unlucky to be bad at spellings," thought Jake. He was good at other subjects, and he couldn't2 seeing a big"C" on his test paper.

After the break, Ms. Kaur said that the Spelling Bee Competition was going to be held. Some students were excited3 they were good at spellings, but others wore uninterested faces. So did Jake. Jake certainly was not taking part in it. He was still 4 his test. He didn't know what to do. Suddenly, he got a good idea. It seemed the best thing to do was to 5 something in spellings. He knew it took courage to take part in something he was 6 at, but it was a window of chance.

The next day, Jake told Ms. Kaur about his decision. "You are a good boy, Jake. You set an example for those who are bad at some subjects, but  7 work for them," said Ms. Kaur.

 8 that day on, Jake started working for the competition. Soon the day for the first 9 of the competition came. It was  10 turn. He walked onto the stage. He was nervous. Ms. Kaur nodded her head  11 . She asked him the word. Jake wanted to  12 right there. He knew the word!" E-N-O-R-M-I-T-Y," he answered.

Unexpectedly, Jake entered the next round and worked even  13 . In the final Jake felt his heart 14 loudly. But when he heard his word, he was no more nervous. "C-O-U-N-C-I-L," he answered correctly. He made it for the subject in which he got bad grades!

Chances come and go. The secret of success is to be  15 when a chance comes. When it comes, you must take it and go on, and never give up.
