Many musicians meet and form(组成)a band because they like to write and play their own music. They may start as a group of high school students and practice their music in someone's house. Sometimes they may play to passers—by in the street or subway so that they can get some money for themselves or pay for their instruments (乐器).

    However, there was one band that started in a different way. It was called the Monkees and was formed in 1965. It began as a TV show. The TV show had planned to find four rock musicians who could act as well as sing. But they could only find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three members of the band.

    Since some of these actors could not sing well enough，they had to ask for help from other musicians. So at first，the band just pretended (假装)to sing. Anyway，their performances were excellent and they got lots of fans. Each week on TV，the Monkees would pretended to play and sing songs written by other musicians. After a year or so，they became more serious about their work. They started to play and sing their own songs like a real band. Then they produced(制作)their own records and started touring and playing their own music. In the USA they became even more influential and popular than the Beatles and sold even more records.

    However, the band broke up around 1970，but happily they reunited(重聚)in the 1980s. They produced a new record in 1996 to celebrate their time as a band. It was very successful. Today the Monkees are still making music for their millions of fans.

    Chrissy had only been in heaven for a few days. She was a (n) 1 angel there. Even though she was the newest angel, Chrissy had been given a very important task (任务). She was in charge of the 2 . Every Monday and every Thursday, she had to be 3 that the clouds get together and spread their raindrops all over the world. Every living thing on the 4 needed rain. Trees needed rain to grow 5 and strong. Grass needed rain to 6 green. All the animals had to have water to 7 and to take baths in. And of course flowers needed the rain to look lovely and smell wonderful. So making the rain come was a very important 8! But no one had told Chrissy how to make it rain, and she didn't know what to do at all.

    Chrissy asked one of the old angels if he could 9 her. "The angel that had the job before you used to tell sad stories to the clouds, and that made them cry," said the old one. But Chrissy was a very 10 little angel and she didn't know any sad stories. So she didn't think that would work.

   It's a fine day. TheWhite family gets up at seven o'clock. They have breakfast at seven forty. Andthen they go to the park. They take a basket of food and a carpet (地毯).The park is not far from their home, so they ride bikes there. When they get tothe park, it's half past eight. Mr. and Mrs. White are talking with each other.Their son, Ted, is playing with a ball. Their daughter, Jenny, is takingphotos.

    After about an hour, Ted and Jenny sit down to relax. At that time, they see a squirrel eating a pine nut (松子)in a big tree. When they see the squirrel eating, they feel hungry. They go tohelp their parents take the food out of the basket. Ted has a hamburger.Hamburgers are his favorite food. Jenny has an apple. Mr. and Mrs. White havesome bread. They have a great time in the park.

This week, we are going to learn about great inventions in the world. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The inventions were trying to make something completely different. Here is one story. 

In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, Percy LeBaron Spencer, an American scientist, was working on a machine to produce powerful radio waves. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} The machine was able to cook things! Percy called it a microwave. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}However, the first microwave weighed around 350 kilograms and was as big as a fridge! {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Now millions of homes have microwaves. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. So we can say that the microwave has changed the way we live. 

One day, Mr Smith takes an apple to the class. He stands in the front of the 1 and says,"Please smell the smell (闻气味) in the air!"

One student puts up his hand and answers, "I can smell it. It is the smell of a(n) 2 ."

Mr Smith asks, "Are you 3 about it?"

"Yes, I am sure about it," the student says.

Mr Smith walks to the students, passes by each of 4 and says, "Please smell again to see if (是否) the smell of the apple is still (仍然) in the air."

Half of the students put up their hands to show that they can smell it. Mr Smith returns (返回) to the front of the classroom 5 asks again if the students can smell the apple. Everyone says 6 except one student called Henry. Mr Smith goes him, asking, "You really can't smell the apple?"

Henry answers, "No, I can't smell it. I don't think it is a real apple."

Mr Smith smiles and says to the class, "He is 7 ! This is not a real apple. 8 doesn't have any smell."

Some of the students may have thought that the apple is not real, but they don't 9 any confidence (自信) to speak up. They just follow (跟随) others and go along with the 10 student. 

If you didn't know my father well, you might think that he was a serious man. But he wasn't. He was actually a wildly funny person What made him appear so serious was the fact that he never smiled with his mouth. He did it all with his eyes. And you could see a tiny golden light dancing in the middle of each eye.

My father was not what you would call an educated man and I doubt if he had read twenty books in his life. But he was a talented story-teller. He used to make up a bedtime story for me every single night, and the best ones were turned into serials(续集).

One of them was about an enormous man called BiGi. He was three times as tall as an ordinary man and his hands looked like bike wheels.

"BiGi lives in an underground cave and has a factory where he makes magic powder (粉末) that out of the dreams that children make when they are asleep," my father's stories continued. "he then carries the powder and blows it through a child's window and the powder floats around the room…and the child breathes it in…"

"And then what?" I asked.

"And then. Danny. the child begins to have a fantastic dream and when the dream reaches its most fantastic moment.. then the magic powder really takes over….and suddenly the dream is not a dream any longer but a real happening" 

Once I fell asleep as my father had hoped. he would kiss me good night and turned down the lamp. I could feel the love in his smiling eyes as I started my dream.
