It never occurred to me to think about my future job till I entered high school. In the years before high school, I 1 much on football and music. That was 2 I spent most of my spare time. After I entered high school, my 3 for civil engineering （土木工程） inspired me to make greater efforts.

I found my way to civil engineering 4 when I read an article about the Los Angeles earthquake in 

1994. Its result was so awful that I was totally shocked. During the earthquake, many buildings fell down. The disaster led to many deaths. The 5 sent me into thinking about how the building projects could be safer, and how I could get them that way. From then on, I 6 to learn civil engineering. 7 different kinds of buildings is a form of recreation for me. Sitting on my bicycle for hours watching the houses around me has made me feel the 8 to shape our buildings into solid ones.

To achieve my ambition, I must 9 that I can get high grades in all my subjects. In school, I am truly fond of science and good at math. 10 , my high school years had been challenged. My poor writing skills used to 11 me a lot. Fortunately, I had a strong wish to achieve my dream. It was the desire, which 12 me to keep practicing, that helped me overcome my shortcomings.

Over the years, I have learned to stick with things that I find right 13 . This character will stay with me till my efforts 14 . That, combined with my longstanding curiosity about 15 our world, is what will make me a great civil engineer someday soon.

Two weeks earlier,my son,Ben,had got in touch.He'd moved to England with his mum when he was three and it had been 13 years since I'd 1 seen him.So imagine my 2 when he emailed me saying he wanted to come to visit me.

I was 3 !I arrived early at Byron Bay where we were supposed to 4 .The bay was 5 in sunshine,and there was a group of kayakers around 150m off the shore.Getting a little 6 ,I realized one kayak(皮划艇) was in 7 ."Something's not 8 !"I took off my T-shirt and 9 into the water.I saw there were two instructors on board and a man lying across the middle.He was 10 violently.Linking arms with one of the instructors,I helped 11 the young man out of the water.He was unconscious and as I looked at his face,something 12 to me.Those brown eyes were very 13 ."What's his name?"I asked the instructor."Ben,"he replied,and immediately I 14 .That stranger was my son! 

The instructors called an ambulance.15 ,after a brief stay in hospital,Ben was well enough to be allowed to 16 and later the family met up for dinner.We chatted about everything and then Ben 17 to me."I just want to say thank you,"he said."You 18 my life!"

I still can't believe what a 19 it was.I'm just so glad I was there 20 to help my son.

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin,it might be "slow".He didn't learn his ABCs as fast as other kids.He never came first in the schoolyard races.However,his smile was bright and he showed great interest in everything.So when he discovered that Randy was putting together a boy's basketball team,Kevin immediately joined.

At practice,Kevin worked so hard that you'd have thought he was preparing for the NBA.And the whole team truly loved basketball.But just loving the game doesn't help you win.They lost every game that season by a very large margin(差距),except one...that night it snowed and the other team couldn't make it to the game.

At the end of the season,the boys unfortunately played against the first-place team.The game went pretty much as expected,and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin's team stood nearly 30 points behind.At that point,one of Kevin's teammates called time-out."Coach,this is our last game but Kevin has never made a basket.We should let him try," said the boy.With the game completely out of reach,the idea seemed reasonable.So every time Kevin's team had the ball,they would give it to Kevin.His first shot missed and he missed another shot again.This continued a few more times until the player from the other team grew wise.Instead of running off down the court,he threw the ball to Kevin who shot...and missed again.

Soon,all the players were circling Kevin,throwing the ball to him.The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping,chanting,"Kevin!Kevin!" Finally,after amounts of tries,the ball went in.Kevin's arms shot high into the air and he shouted,"I won!I won!" The first-place team remained unbeaten,but on that evening,everyone left the game truly feeling like a winner.

I recently read Pablo Picasso's quote, "I'm always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it." It reminded me of myself—and how I do, learn, and improve. I recalled one of my earliest memories of doing before learning: baking scones(烤饼) when I was 10 years old. I wanted to bake scones for my mom.

I always sat at the kitchen table when my mom baked, and I had observed her process numerous times. She always used a recipe book and followed the process carefully. As I started to try, I didn't know I shouldn't handle the dough (面团) with my hands too much once I had added the baking powder(发酵粉). However, I knew exactly how to roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to cut the scones, because I had repeated it in my mind hundreds of times.

As my mom arrived home, the smell of freshly baked scones welcomed her into the kitchen. They were baked to golden brown perfection—flat, as a result of over-handling the dough, but they tasted OK. My mom praised me for my attempt, rather than blaming me for the state of the kitchen, which was a surprise! That night she told my dad how proud she was, and what a good job I'd done. Over time, she taught me the finer tricks of baking and cooking.

My habit of doing before learning still stands me in good stead. Whatever computer program or application I have to learn, I do so by simply starting to use it. I learn as I go on, and I've often been able to help others because I've gone through the process of learning from beginning to end. What I discovered from my experience is the wisdom to know when it's OK to do and then learn, and when it's probably better to learn and then do!

Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik's kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death

After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "For just this period of time, we didn't think about cancer," Kelli Boehle said. "All we thought about was enjoying our time together." In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He'd been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.

"It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn't stop coming into my mind," she said. In 2012, Kelli Boehle started Nik's Wish. The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization's first wish recipient. "It's meant to bring them joy and know that they're loved and that we're fighting for them, too," Kelli Boehle said.

Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a Taylor Swift concert as part of a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. "I think it's something to get me through whatever comes my way," she said. "And I'm thankful for Nik's Wish for that."

In the 1lyearssinceNik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn't sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults.But now, it'sher favoritething to do.

It was not until photographer Rita Nannini left New York that she grew fascinated by the city's subways. While living in Manhattan for some 15 years in the 1980s and early 1990s, Nannini only commuted (通勤) on the one train-given the subway system's bad reputation. But after relocating to New Jersey for several years where subway is not an option, Nannini found that absence did make the heart grow fonder — maybe even for pizza rats. During her visit back to New York, Nannini nodded, noticing improvements in the subway's facilities.

While Nannini was waiting for a train, a bench on the platform opposite caught her attention due to the ever changing faces and characters. They were people of different accents, colors and beliefs. They were from all walks of life, a diverse mix of New Yorkers all there for their own different reasons. Having learned the teenagers' popular "End of the Line" challenge — boarding trains at random and riding them until their final destination; Nannini decided to visit every first and last stop across the NY subway's lines with her beloved camera.

Nannini's "End of the Line" experience saw her traveling some 665 miles across 26 routes in New York city. She took over 8,000 photos of the final stations, as well as the communities they served. In many cases, she rode the routes two or three times over to ensure she got "the shot". "The project really shows me how important the subway is, and how sustainable it makes our lives," she said 

"It's often said that my photos show the end of the lines — the last stops," she said. "But theend of the line is indeed the start for so many people. That made me think about who the people and the communities that live at the two ends are and what it is that the subway means to them."

Nannini was proud of her set of images directly challenging the traditions of story telling, which echoed both the boredom and excitement of travel on tracks.

Nannini enjoyed taking her time, starting her challenge in 2013 and only shooting the final photos last year. Her first monograph on the terminal stops of the NY subway was released in April 2023.

"When you drive in the suburbs, you don't have those encounters," she continued. "People enter your life on the subway. That's what strikes me most on my jouney on tracks."
