I had worked that day, as a nurse. Now I faced the dirty supper dishes. I wanted to 1 why Jimmy hadn't phoned as usual to say "Good night" to Bob and Tom. "Maybe Daddy's  2 working on an accident," I said to Bob. "Go to 3 now. You'll see him in the morning." Soon there was a knock at the door. "There 4 be something wrong with your phone," my neighbor told me. "The City Police Station wants you to 5."

    I went into the living room and dialed. Then I 6  the words every police wife fears (害怕): "Your husband has been hurt." When I reached the hospital, my heart sank (下沉). The entrance was jammed with TV-news trucks. In the 7 I saw Jimmy's best friend, Smith. "Just tell me -is he alive?" I asked.

    Smith 8 and didn't answer. Then I found my younger sister, Mandy. "He's 9." she told me, and we began to cry together.

    Later, Smith told me 10 had happened.

    In the morning, when my little Bob asked, "Where's Daddy?" I 11 him into my arms and tried to explain. "A bad man 12 Daddy last night." I said. "Daddy can't come home any more. He's in heaven(天堂) now."

    My son looked at me, his blue eyes 13 the picture of trust(相信). "Do they have 14 in heaven?" he asked. "Can I call him?"

    "No, Bob, Daddy still loves you, but Daddy can't 15".

    Maria Mitchell was born in 1818 during a time when many people thought that woman did not need to learn . But , Mitchell's father thought that both boys and girls should go to school .1 he tutored her at home as well as sent to her to school .

    Mitchell's father , recognizing her interest in astronomy (天文学) at early age , encouraged her interest and taught her how to use a telescope . As an 2 she worked as the first librarian at the Nantucket Atheneum library from 1836to 1856 , all the while still looking at the sky at night , studying the stars and the planets.

    In October 1847, Mitchel saw a bright star through the telescope . She was sure that she had 3seen that star before. Excited , she ran to tell her father . She carefully wrote notes about the star. The next night , it looked as if the” star” had 4It also seemed to have a tail (尾巴)！Now , Mitchell was sure that she had found a comet , not a star.

    At eh time , the king of Denmark was offering a prize to the first person to find a comet that could only be seen through a telescope . Mitchell won the prize! It was a gold medal . But , she won something else too . She won people's respect when they saw that she was 5her work . Later , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences voted her in as its first female member .

    In 1856, a new college just for women opened . It was called Vassar College , and Mitchell became a professor there . She was the first female professor to teach astronomy , or the science of stars and planets . Because of her , female students learned that they could be scientists too . Women could make valuable 6to help understand our world .

    Ann was ill. She went to see a doctor. The doctor asked her to1her tongue (舌头), and then he said,  "OK. You can put your tongue back now. There's2wrong with you, but I'm afraid you have a problem, you never do3"

    "But, doctor," Ann said, "I don't think so."

    "Don't4me what you think," the doctor said, "I see a lot of people5you. None of them get any exercise. They sit in offices all day and in front of the TV in the evening. You must walk quickly for at least 20 minutes a day."

    "Doctor, you don't understand," Ann said, "I take enough exercise every day."

    "I don't want to6any excuses," the doctor said, "You must spend time 7 exercise, if you don't, you will get8 and have health problems."

    "But I walk every day." Ann said.

    "Oh, yes, and I know what kind of walking that is. You walk9meters to the bus stop from your house, from the bus stop to your office, and from your office to your dining-room for lunch and back. That's not a real walk. I'm talking about a walk by the lake or in the park for 20 minutes every day."

    "Would you please 10  me, doctor?" Ann said,   "I'm a postwoman. I walk for nearly seven hours every day."

    For a moment the doctor was silent, then he said, "Can I see your tongue again?"

    The best experience of my life was when we went to Stonehenge. We went there on a group tour.

    When I saw Stonehenge, my first 1 was that it was huge. You know, Stonehenge is about 5, 000 years old. I 2 how the ancient people moved these huge pieces of stone. After we parked(停车) at the Stonehenge parking lot, our guide Nick took us to a 3shop. There my mum got a nice painting of Stonehenge. After we left the gift shop, we went to Stonehenge 4the tunnel.

    That was a privilege(优惠待遇)at Stonehenge 5we were able to go right up to the stones and touch them. Usually visitors 6get really close and touch the stones. At Stonehenge we walked around the circle and then 7the ceremonial(仪式的) centre. There we were given half a(n) 8 to look around and explore.9 30 minutes we got ready to leave. It was 10 that we had to leave Stonehenge.

    Hopefully, one day I'll go back.

    Shirley Temple was born in 1928 in California. She was a very lovely little girl 1 blonds curly hair (金色卷发). She was also a good actress.

    In the 1930s, life was 5 in the USA. Many people didn't have jobs, but 6 of poor people paid money to go to the cinemas to 7 Shirley Temple. People felt happy 8 she sang and danced. Mothers wanted their daughters to have curly hair like Shirley Temple. Little girls played with Shirley Temple dolls.

    9 loved little Shirley. People sent her presents. On her eighth birthday, she got 1,000 cakes. Her fans sent her 5,000 10 a week. But her mother didn't spoil(溺爱) her. Little Shirley only got $4.25 a week and had to eat the spinach(菠菜).
