    "She's small and dark," he said, "and nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walks. She has a face," he said, thinking a minute, "that has lots of spirit. I mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. She's got a brown fur, but maybe she isn't wearing it."

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia was delivered to my house in Bethesda, Maryland. No card or note came with it. Calls to the florist were always in vain一it was a cash purchase. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender's identity and was just delighted in the beauty and fragrance of that magical, perfect white flower placed in soft pink tissue paper.

However, I never stopped imagining who the anonymous giver might be. My mother contributed to these imaginings. "This is just right," the little girl said. "Momma says grandpa loves music."

Just then, Pappy's expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl's heart, he told her, "I'm sorry, Missy. That's not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio. "

The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed," No, I don't think so. "

In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

My mind went back to the conversation I'd had with Marie earlier. Paul had dropped her off at the mall, where she was getting picked up for a babysitting job. "Remember we're going Christmas shopping this night," she said. "Now I'll even have my own money. See you later. "
