The Penguin Calendar

    The chart above shows five activities of penguins over a period of one year, month by month. They are hole staying, nest building, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, chick raising and moulting. The penguins stay in the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} most of the year, from January to October. In July, they begin to build nests, just {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (before/ after) they lay eggs. Chick raising lasts five months, from September to the next {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. After chicks come out of the eggs, they begin to lose their baby hair, which is called moulting. It usually takes about {#blank#}5{#/blank#} months, from February to May.

I'm Mike I'm a middle school student. I learn many subjects in school. 我最喜欢的科目是科学 The science teacher Mrs Green, is my friend Jill's mother. She is nice and she teaches very well.

    I like maths because I think it is so interesting. I always do very well in the maths

tests (测试). My friends say I am clever (聪明的), but I don' t think so. I just work very hard.

    I also like geography. I like learning about people and places. I want to know what they are like and what they're doing. I travel a lot. I'm making plans for my trip on Sunday.

    I don't like English It is not very interesting. We read a lot, sometimes write, but we don't often speak or listen. Most children want to talk with others in English.

    Students generally find it difficult to prepare for a speaking test because they have nobody to practise    (A)    or correct their mistakes. But that doesn't mean you can't test yourself.

    Whether you're taking an end-of-course test or an official (官方 ) exam like PET or IELTS, there's one great tool you can use: your mobile phone. Nearly every smartphone these days has an inbuilt recording feature (内置录音功能) which you can use to test your speaking skills. You can record yourself speaking, play the recording back, and correct your own mistakes.

    I practised this way in Italian. I chose some speaking questions from PET and did the exercise three times. The first time, I made a few grammar mistakes and didn't speak for long enough. The second time was a bit better, and the third time was nearly perfect.

    All in all, I made a real improvement with my grammar, pronunciation and how long I spoke. Also, recording myself put me under the pressure (压力) I would experience during an important speaking test.

    Many students found this method    (B)   . Nelia, from Brazil, said that she could hear her mistakes when she listened to her voice. She was mainly using the wrong verb tense (时态) and using prepositions(介词) incorrectly. When she tried the exercise again, she got its right! Donghyeon, from South Korea, said that the exercise helped him to improve his English skills in general.

    In 1995, the UNESCO's General Conference held in Paris designated the World Book Day on April 23 to say thanks to books and writers worldwide and to invite everyone to be a lifelong reader.

    This book offers us a main introduction about the wonderful culture of Chinese characters. With enough examples, it proves that learning the most difficult language in the world can be rather interesting.

    ⒌Symbols of China (中国符号)
