The Other Side of the Wall

    There was a young woman who took great pride in her flower garden. She was raised by her grandmother who taught her to love and take care of flowers. So her flower garden was the 1.

    One day, while she was looking through a flower list she often 2 the flowers from, suddenly a picture of a plant caught her eyes. She had never 3 blooms(花) on a flower like that before. “I have to have it,” she said to 4, and she ordered it at once.

When it arrived, she already had a 5 prepared to plant it. She planted it at the back of her yard. It grew well, with beautiful green leaves all over it, 6 there were no blooms. Day after day she continued to water it, feed it, and she even talked to it, trying to make it bloom. However, it was 7.

    One morning, a few weeks later, when standing before the vine(藤), she felt very 8 that her plant had not bloomed. She was giving thought to  9 it down and planting something else in its place.

    It was at this point that her neighbor, whose 10 joined hers, called over to her. “Thank you so much! You can't imagine how much I have 11 the blooms of that vine you planted.” The young woman walked 12 the gate into her neighbor's yard, and she saw that on the other side of the wall the vine was 13 with blooms.

    They were indeed the most beautiful blooms she had 14 seen. The vine had grown through the crevices (缝隙) and it had not flowered on 15 side of the wall, but it had flowered on the other side.

    Sometimes one may not see the good result of his effort (努力), but that doesn't mean it isn't successful.

    A group of adults, highly succeeded in their jobs, went to visit their old professor. Soon they began to1 the stress in work and life.

    The professor went to the kitchen and returned2a pot of coffee and all kinds of cups —crystal (水晶), glass, plastic; some nice looking, some simple looking; some 3some cheap. And he told them to help4to the coffee.

    When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, “I've noticed that all the nice looking expensive cups were 5 leaving behind the simple and cheap ones. While it is

    You know that the cup itself adds no quality (品质) to the coffee8 you really wanted was coffee, not the cup9 you went for the best cups without thinking.

    Now consider this: Life is the coffee. The jobs, money and 10 in society are the cups. They are just11 to hold life, and the type of cup doesn't change the quality of our life. Joe Hoagland was three years old when the story began. And Fonzie is a dolphin (海豚).

When Joe was born, he had a problem with his heart and doctors had to operate (动手术) on him. The operation didn't go well and he couldn't move the left side of his body. The doctors at the hospital didn't think he could get better.

His mother Deena took him to different places for treating. Joe liked being in the water and Deena thought swimming could help him. One day, she went with Joe to a place called Dolphin Plus, where people swam with dolphins. Joe met Fonzie there and the story began.

Soon, Joe wanted to see Fonzie every day. Joe loved playing with him and feeding him. Joe always fed Fonzie with his left hand. Slowly, he got better and better. Deena saw that Joe's friendship with Fonzie helped him a lot, and she knew it was a good idea for other people, too. So, she and her family worked to open a place called Island Dolphin Care. Many people with health problems came to spend time with the dolphins. Sadly, Fonzie died when Joe was 17. Joe wrote: Fonzie was a great friend to me. We shared a lot of good times. I will always remember him.

"Good morning, Grandma! What are these on the bed?" Frank asks. "They are your old 1 . I want to sell them to the old clothes store." Grandma says.

"May I have a look? They might still (仍然) be right for me. Wow! A T-shirt! Oh, no! It's so small. It is 2 my grandpa. There are some sports things on it, like volleyballs, tennis bats and 3 . What about the sports trousers? My uncle bought them for 4 . They look cool but they're too short. Well, let me 5 my sports socks. I am very happy to get them on New Year's Day."

After a while, Grandma comes back. "Guess what? They are right for someone."

"OK, Grandma. Let's give the clothes to them."
