Our Day Camp is more than a place where children simply play. We are a group of devoted educators who long to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. 

Sailfish

Entering 3rd & 4th Grades

Sailfish groups are separated by gender(性别) and enjoy intramural(校内的) sports with a greater emphasis placed on teamwork and sportsmanship. Sailfish group also enjoy all of the aquatic(水生的) activities our waterfront campus has to offer, along with a daily schedule of activities that enrich the mind and body. 

Tadpoles

Entering Kindergarten

This group of campers have their own learning facility(设施) and take part in age-appropriate specials throughout the day. The Tadpoles swim twice daily in our in-ground swimming pool. A certified teacher and counselorsc指导老师) arganize and monitor the day's activities, helping the Tadpoles to prepare for the fun of the upcoming school year. 

Minnows

Entering lst & 2nd Grades

These campers are grouped by gender and have the chance to play sports-centered games, explore art and saence and become acquainted with the excitement of sailing on Stony Brook Harbor. Daily swimming lessons are also included, and trips to the beach are a favorite of the Minnows. Both certified teachers and senior counselors work with these campers to provide a safe and enriching experience. 

Dolphins

Entering 5th & 6th Grades

These campers participate in a wide variety of sports and activities. Same-gendered grouping allows flexibility for the groups to choose their favorite games during meeting times. Dolphins also spend time sailing on the Harbor, swimming in our in-ground swimming pool and participating in adventurous activities. 

In Rio, soccer was not only a sport but also a lifestyle. Lamine's flashy1 and exciting gameplay were the drive to his success. He was in a team called FC that had the best players.

As FC made it to the soccer final,2 filled the air. They were against their biggest rivals KD. As the clock counted down, one of Lamine's teammates3 the ball over to Lamine.

With a powerful4 , Lamine aimed for the goal, the ball soaring（呼啸） through the air. Time seemed to stop as the goalkeeper leaped5 . Luck was not at Lamine's side as the ball was cleared by the defender. The referee's whistle blew,6 the game.

With the sun setting, Lamine's father found him sitting7 on the field. Father was once a skilled soccer player, knowing the8 that came with the game. He patted Lamine on the back, "Lamine, even the greatest players would9 chances. Don't let one setback define you. "

Encouraged by father's words, Lamine10 and hugged him. For the next few days, they spent mornings and evenings on the field,11 his shots and improving his speed and skills.

The next game arrived, and Laminez found himself in a12 position. This time, with a swift move, he dribbled past defenders and13 the ball into the net.

The crowd erupted in cheers, and Lamine's teammates14 him carrying him to the sidelines to celebrate. Lamine went to hug his dad tightly. "I'm proud of you, son. I'll15 you my signature move in my old days. "his father said.

The Boy Made it!

    One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

    Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
    He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
    Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
    By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
    The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
    Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs. Wild. Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
    When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

In 2011, Nancy Ballard went for a routine check-up that turned into something extraordinary. In fact, she was carrying a painting of a plant she'd done when she arrived at her doctor's San Francisco office. "It would be great if we had artwork like that for our chemotherapy(化疗) rooms," the nurse said. Ballard asked to see one. 

She was shocked by what she found. The walls were dull and bare, and the paint was falling. It was a depressing room for a depressing routine—patients were restricted to chemo drips for perhaps several hours, often with nothing to look at other than those sad walls. Ballard didn't have cancer herself, but she could sympathize with the patients. "I couldn't imagine how anyone could even think about getting healthy in a room like that," she says. As it happened, Ballard's physician, Stephen Hufford, was ill with cancer himself, so finding time to decorate the rooms was low on his to-do list. So Ballard made it her task to brighten up the place. 

She started by emailing 20 local designers. "I wrote, ‘You don't know me. But my heart hurts after seeing these rooms,'" she remembers. She then asked whether they would donate their time and money to transform just one of Dr Hufford's rooms each. 

As it happened, six of them wrote back almost immediately. Six rooms got new paint, light fixtures, artwork and furniture. Dr Hufford was delighted. "All the patients feel relieved of the pain because of it," he said. He even noted that his own tone of voice was different in the rooms and that he was better able to connect with his patients. 

Ballard was so encouraged by the patients' reactions that she created a non-profit organization to raise money and decorate more spaces. Since then, she has worked on 20 projects, including one in Pennsylvania. "We were in Philadelphia for a ribbon-cutting(剪彩), and a woman was there on her third battle with cancer," says Ballard. "When she saw what we'd done, she said, ‘I'm gonna beat it this time. I thought I wasn't going to, but now I know I'm gonna beat it.'"

I was sitting at my desk when another graduate student in my lab approached me. "Can you help?" he asked. His experiment wasn't working and he desperately needed help. I was then a fifth year PhD student, and I took pride in being the senior member of the lab, whom everyone looked up to. But that also meant I was the one everyone turned to for help — which ate away bours, days, and sometimes weeks that I could have spent on my own research.

There were many reasons I had a hard time saying no to such pleas (恳求). I was new to the United States for graduate school. I found it difficult to make new friends and discover activities I enjoyed. So I spent a huge chank of my time in the lab, with my lab-mates serving as my primary source of social connection. I feared that if I turned down their requests, I'd lose their favor.

But the extra responsibilities came at a cost. I had to work extra hours to catch up with my own work, and I often made sacrifices to my personal life.

It wasn't until my wife gave birth to our first child that I realized how thin I had stretched myself and how misguided my priorities(优先次序) were. While she lay in a hospital bed in the early stages of labor, I sat nearby hunched(伏首前倾的) over my laptop finishing up a work report. Hours later, after hearing my daughter's first cry and watching her tiny fingers grab tightly onto mine, it dawned on me: I should have been fully present during my daughter's birth. I was clearly spending too much time working if my job had intruded(侵入) into one of the most precious moments of my life.

From then on ,I decided to spend more time with my family by declining extra assignments and carefully considering each request for help. I still enjoyed collaborating with others, but I prioritized mutually beneficial tasks or those my manager asked me to take on, rather than accepting everything that came my way.

I noticed many benefits: no longer working overtime and improved work performance. I was also pleased to discover that "Sorry , I'd love to help but I have a deadline coming up" is an acceptable response to a request for assistance.

It's hard to say "no " to those you work with. But I've learned that sometimes that's the best course of action to avoid an excessive workload and lead a freer and happier life.

At just 18 years old, Khalifa Aminu from Kano, Nigeria, has proved himself as an amazing inventor, with his sensory glasses designed to help the visually impaired (视障人士).

The glasses are fitted with infrared sensors (红外传感器) that can "see" obstacles in the user's path, warning them about possible dangers without the need for traditional walking sticks or guide dogs. In their current form, the glasses let out a beeping sound when an object is nearby, helping users move past it safely. Aminu is now working on making the glasses even more effective, particularly in low-light and nighttime conditions.

Aminu's journey into the world of invention began in childhood. He started small, building a canoe (独木舟) as his first project, and quickly realized that his creations could be used to solve real-world problems in his community. This love for invention has led him to create various innovations such as a radio station, a bomb detector and an automatic water sprayer for farmers.

As for how Aminu came up with the idea of his latest creation, Aminu explained, "I grew up in an area where there are visually impaired people, and I understand what they're going through. This is why I began the process for a technology-based solution for them."

The glasses have received positive feedback from testing. In a recent trial, a blind man was highly impressed by their effectiveness. "He suggested several improvements, like a wireless switch, smaller parts, and lenses for better usability," Aminu explained. "These suggestions will be carried out in future versions, but the challenge remains the lack of materials and resources for further development."

Luckily, in June, Aminu's invention caught the attention of Nigeria's National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, suggesting a bright future for him in further innovation and mass production. "My ultimate dream is to build a global company that continues to develop innovative technological solutions not only for Nigeria but for the world," said Aminu.
