Table Talk

As we got out of the car, our son announced, "Phones stay in the car."

"Why do you always have to tell us that?" complained our fifteen-year-old grandson.

Our son's wife winked at us and then explained, "We have a family1 that no one may bring anything electronic to the table."

We 2 our phones in the car. Even though the restaurant was filled with families, there was little noise. All I heard were a few quiet conversations and the ding of forks on plates. The 3 unnerved me. I looked around. Everyone, even the young kids, was 4 at some kind of screen. 

The silence was broken when the six of us sat down, and started talking. The waitress stood patiently and waited for our orders. When our food came, we continued to chat. 

An elderly couple at the next table were finishing their dinners and conversing quietly. I noticed that they shot us a few glances, and wondered if our constant chatter was annoying them. 

After the dessert, my son signaled the waitress for the check. She hesitated when she brought the black folder to our table. My son opened the black folder — it was5 . "You forgot the check," he told her.

"There isn't one. Someone else6 your bill — and the tip too." she said with a giggle (咯咯笑).

"Why?" asked our son, his wife and myself at once.

"They loved it that no one was connected." she continued. "They loved watching you guys7 . The old lady went on and on about how nice it was to see a family eating and talking instead of looking at ‘electric games'."

For a moment, everyone at our table was at a loss for8 . Then we all started talking at once. My son's voice rose above the others. "Where are they? We want to thank them."

"They left after you ordered dessert," the waitress replied.

We spent the next fifteen minutes discussing this goodness and camp up with a 9 . Next time we see a family eating at a restaurant 10 looking at anything electronic, we'll pay it forward, just like what happened to us.

Dean Moberg works at SeaWorld, which rescues more birds than any other type of animal. The hardest part of Dean's 1 is when he finds birds that were hurt 2 . Sometimes Dean finds sandhill cranes (沙丘鹤) that have been shot by arrows (箭) or hit by golf balls. Most of the time, the cranes that Dean 3 have been injured by chance. One way that they can get hurt is by looking inside rubbish for food.

When people see a crane that 4 help, they know to call SeaWorld. Dean and his team will drive hours to 5 the bird.

Usually, sandhill crane adults are found in pairs. The mother crane and the father crane work 6 to raise their babies. Dean knows how 7 the cranes are when they are separated, but if one of them is hurt, it must go back to SeaWorld for 8 .

Dean writes down exactly where he 9 each crane. When the cranes are 10 , he takes them back to the same place. He lets them go and they are able to find their 11 again.

Saving sandhill cranes with serious injuries isn't 12 ! Inventive, specially designed lift and support tools allow injured cranes to eat and rest while keeping weight off their 13 legs.

It takes a great deal of patience, determination, and love for these special birds to fully 14 . Luckily, that's something they find with Dean and the other 15 members of his team.

I still remember that busy fall evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena, to get to her classroom on time for a parent-teacher night. We walked in and all 1 were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids' 2 . A classmate 3 my daughter, "What's wrong with your mom's 4 ?" Shocked, I started to explain my 5 , but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, "It's my mom's birthmark! Don't be rude!" I was extremely 6 of how she handled that situation. 

I was quite young when I realized I looked 7 . I always thought I would be alone because of birthmark, but I was lucky enough to meet my 8 who saw me for who I am inside. When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to 9 if the world would judge my children. 10 , my facial difference has 11 my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or certain kids are no longer friends with mine. 

When my kids were 12 , I explained how my special purple skin was rare, and we talked about acceptance and never 13 others on how they look. With time, both my daughters have become my strongest 14 : we see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more 15 heart.

During my last stay in France, I got used to biking down a quiet road. Round a corner, I 1 a little house. In its yard, there was an elderly woman. I waved at her as I went by, and she must have thought I was some 2 tourist, because she didn't wave back.

The 3 thing happened the second day. But on the third day, the old woman 4 a wave, and by the fourth day, she nearly got out of her chair as I5 to her.

"Good morning, Madam!" It became a small ritual(礼节) between us.

On my last ride there, however, I didn't' t6 the lady there. Back at my house, I told Roger, the gardener, of my missed7

"She has a bad leg and has gone to the hospital for8 , " he said.

"Who is she? "I asked.

"The 9 road used to be a railway, and the lady's husband was once the stationmaster," Roger explained, "Several times a day, 10 a train passed, the couple would see passengers waving to them excitedly. 11 , the station was moved away. Everything is 12 except for this couple. She has 13 the trains and the waves. And you just brought them back to her14 ,"

By reaching out, in a way that cost me nothing, I had given more than I had15 .
