Mother's Day first began in America. A mother was very kind. After she died, her daughter wanted to remember her so she wanted to make a day for all the mothers. In 1913, America decided to make the second Sunday of May to be Mother's Day and every family had to put up a national flag to show their love to mothers. Later, it became an important festival to remember and praise(赞扬) all the mothers in the world.

In China, some people want to make our own Mother's Day. There is a famous story about Mother Meng. She loved her son very much and did a lot for her son. Chinese people think she was a great mother, so people want to make lunar(阴历的) April 2nd to be the day. Because Mother Meng's son——Mengzi was born on that day.

On Mother's Day, children often help their mothers do some cleaning and they also buy gifts for their mothers. Some mothers even go for a trip and have some other activities to celebrate this day.

At the end of year 2022, the Singaporean government announced that all drinks sold locally must use nutritional grade labels (营养等级标签) A, B, C, or D on their packaging, marking the percentage of sugar and saturated fat (饱和脂肪) in the drinks. So recently several Singaporean drink companies have already started to put these labels on every drink. In March, 2024 Shanghai, China did the same. The labels are from A to D. The more sugar and saturated fat a drink has, the less healthy the drink is. 

Bill was a boy of 15. His parents went to gambling (赌博) day and night. 

Nobody cared about him. He always failed in his exams. So his teachers didn't like him, nor did his classmates play with him. Bill often slept in class because his heart was not in school. He almost gave himself up. 

One day, Miss Jones, a new teacher, came to Bill's class. She was a smiling, beautiful woman. Bill was in love! For the first time in his young life, he couldn't take his eyes off his teacher. 

It was Miss Jones' class. She was asking a question. "I'd like the smartest boy to answer my question. " Then she said loudly, "Bill, please!" Bill was surprised. And he stood up without a word. 

"Just try it! I believe you can!" After school, Miss Jones had a long talk with Bill. She told him that she cared about him and believed in him. 

Bill thought a lot that evening. From then on, he arrived at school on time every day. Miss Jones helped him with his homework in the afternoon. She even cooked delicious food for him. She told Bill, "Nothing is impossible if you put your heart in it. "

Later, Miss Jones gave another exam. Bill did it with all his heart. He was very excited to find that he had passed the exam. Now Bill discovered that not only could he learn, but he could do it well. A change took place in Bill's heart. 

You see, one teacher saved one boy. It's simple, really.

He has many kinds of animals. Look at the horses. They are white. How many horses can you see? I can see twelve. Does he have cows? Yes, he has. He has ten black and white cows. He has fifteen rabbits, too. They are brown. Look! What are under the big tree? Oh, they are baby chickens. The chickens are yellow. Are those ducks? No, they aren't. They are geese. The geese are white. Do you like sheep? He has eleven white sheep, too. What's that over there ? It's a black dog. I like it.

What else can you see on the farm? I can see apple trees, tomato and potato plants and flowers.

If you've ever seen elephant seals(象海豹) lying on a beach, you might think all they do is sleep. But now scientists have discovered that when elephant seals are in the ocean, they hardly sleep at all. They just sleep for about two hours a day.

Even though elephant seals are large animals, they have to be careful in the ocean. Near the surface(水面), predators like sharks and orca s are a danger. So elephant seals spend most of their time diving(潜水) deep underwater, looking for food. Usually, they will dive for about 30 minutes, then come up for air for just a couple of minutes before diving again.

Scientists have wondered how elephant seals can sleep while they're at sea, since they are almost diving all the time. Animals like dolphins and sea lions have a special way. One half of their brain can sleep, while the other stays awake. But elephant seals are like humans- both halves of the brain need to go to sleep at the same time. So how do they sleep?

To find out, a scientist named Jessica Kendall- Bar did a research. She created a special cap that could record the elephant seals' brain activity. The cap also collected information on the elephant seals' heart rates, how their bodies were moving, and how deep they were. Dr. Kendall- Bar and her team put the caps on thirteen young female elephant seals.

The scientists learned that elephant seals steep in short times while they are diving. They only sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. They wake up in time to go up for more air. The scientists found that elephant seals only sleep for about two hours a day when they're in the ocean. That means that the rest they get once they return to land is very important, which helps them have energy again. Back on land they sleep for about 10.8 hours a day

The researchers hope that their work will help to protect the places where elephant seals sleep when they're on land.

I saved the rice and wheat carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away. 

Then when my crop(庄稼) bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them, but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows(稻草人), which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat. 

With my new rice and wheat to store, I found a new problem. The fine rice and wheat ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly bowls — one for rice and one for wheat. 

Next I made some tools from hard wood and cloth to make bread. I made bread with my tools. I spent the third year on the island in farming and making bread. 

Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore(探索) the island by sea. 

I tried to turn over the ship's boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined(坚定的) to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn the tree into a boat. 

When it was time to sail, I realised I had made my boat too far from the nearest river. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of work. 

I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.
