A young whale(鲸鱼) got stuck near the beach today. The whale was small and had been born {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(recent). Some people saw the whale {#blank#}2{#/blank#} trouble. They called the police.

Soon help was on the way. Jenny Smith {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(arrive) first. She is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} scientist who examines whales. Jenny usually looks at every part of an animal {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(see) if it is healthy. A whale is a mammal(哺乳动物). Mammals are warm-blooded animals that have hair and drink {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(they) mother's milk. Jenny checked the whale's heartbeat and breathing. She said the whale seemed normal. There were no {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(sign) of illness.

Next, Jenny checked to see {#blank#}8{#/blank#} hunger was a problem or not. Going a long time without food can be dangerous for a whale. But this whale seemed healthy and full.

The helpers acted fast. They kept the whale wet. The tide slowly came in. The water got{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (deep) than before. Soon the whale could swim again. At last, the whale was rescued! Its life {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(save) by Jenny and the other helpers. If they didn't get the whale back in the water soon, it will die and they couldn't let that happen.

Do you know oilpaper umbrellas? They have a {#blank#}1{#/blank#} of over 1, 000 years in China.  Liu Weixue is a master at making oilpaper umbrellas. 

In 2015, Liu gave up a well-paid job as a designer (设计师).  He decided to learn the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} art of making Yuhang oilpaper umbrellas from his grandfather. "I want to bring the art to life," Liu said.  "When it rains, someone {#blank#}3{#/blank#}  the umbrella—that's what I want to see. "

Liu has improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people.  As the paper used in ancient times was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} broken, he started to use thicker paper.  In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1, 000 {#blank#}5{#/blank#} without breaking. He used a {#blank#}6{#/blank#} bamboo than before to make the umbrellas weigh less. 

In 2017, Liu opened an online shop to sell umbrellas.  Now  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} shop has more than 80, 000 followers.  Liu has  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}  thought about how to sell more umbrellas.  What he cares  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  is how to make

high-quality (高质量的) oilpaper umbrellas. His workshop makes only 1, 000 umbrellas each year. 

Liu hopes the art of making oilpaper umbrellas can be passed on.  He often goes to some local schools to {#blank#}10{#/blank#} students. He also goes to events in different places to promote (推广) the art.

Chen Peng won the 2024 New Times' Good Teenager award. Now, it's my great honor to introduce him to you. 

A small boy was trying to move a heavy wooden box out of his room. The box was much bigger than the boy. He tried his best to move it, but the box would not move at all. After resting for a short time, the boy tried to move it again. He pushed it with every muscle (肌肉) in his body, but he couldn't even move the box a little. He was very tired and upset (不安). 

The boy's father was coming home from work around this time. He stopped to watch his son's fruitless efforts (徒劳的努力). The father didn't help him, but instead (相反) asked, "Son, have you tried your best and are you doing everything you can?"

"Yes, I am!" the boy cried. "No, " his father said calmly (平静地), "you're not. You have not asked me to help you. "

Asking for help is not a weakness (弱点). At some point, even the best of us need help. It is important to know when to ask for help and understand why you need it. Never be afraid to ask other's for help when you're in trouble. 

Two Canadian teenagers, Faiz and Leo, have been taking on a series of wonderful challenges. Their most recent achievement was following the Lake Ontario coastline for 73 kilometers, walking from Toronto to Hamilton, Canada, in about 18 hours.

"We enjoy trying new things that are good for our bodies and minds. We like to overcome challenges like these. And we feel going on a long walk seems to be the purest form of challenge that you can have," Leo said.

With very little preparation, the two 16-year-olds began their journey at 6 am, starting in darkness and finishing before midnight. They took several breaks, stopping at benches with nice views along the way.

On their walk, one of the interesting things they came across was a cargo ship (货船) which was no longer used. "You' d be surprised by the things that you don't see when you' re driving and that you will see when you' re taking your time walking," said Leo.

However, the journey was not only a trial (考验) for bodies but also an important test of minds. There were moments of loneliness for the pair, requiring them to support each other along the way.

Around 70 km into the walk, they ran into a person on a bridge who appeared to be experiencing something painful.

"I wasn't sure what was going to happen me and Leo, we tried to talk him out of it and ended up calling the police, and the situation was eased and everyone was OK," Faiz said.

The walk is now long over but Faiz and Leo are not done challenging themselves, with plans to start a two-day 100 km walk in the near future.

 Some artists are often not famous in their lifetime. Vincent Van Gosh(梵高) was one of  {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (they). People did not pay much attention to his works. He began to think he was not a very good artist. But he did not stop {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (paint). Vincent loved it. He would become so {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (interest) in what he was doing that he did not want to stop. He would even forget {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (eat)!

 His early paintings were dark. He used lots of brown and dark green. Later, Vincent moved to France. He wanted to learn from the artists working there. They were trying new {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (way) of painting. In France, Vincent began using bright colors and bold brushstrokes, He used oil paints to create his art. He painted the countryside. He painted people, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} . He also painted his own portrait(肖像画). He created more than 20 portraits of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (he).

 People did not buy Vincent's paintings in his lifetime. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} today his paintings sell for a lot of money. Most people think his paintings are {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (popular) of all the art pieces. His still life(静物画) of yellow sunflowers in a pitcher is well-known. Another famous painting is of yellow stars in a dark blue sky. In his lifetime, he {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (finish) more than 2,000 paintings.
