    A ten-year-old girl raised over 30, 000 pounds for a children's hospice in just eight months. What she did was to play her violin to the people who passed by in the street.

    Madison Glinski from the U. K. made a New Year's resolution to help poor children last year. She planned to try and raise 500 pounds for a local children's hospice before Christmas. Every day after school, Madison played the violin in front of a coffee shop. She played so well that many people stopped to enjoy her performance. People liked her idea of helping children in need so they were willing to give her money. Since she began playing the violin in the street at Easter, she had raised a surprising 32, 520 pounds by the end of the year. She also raised money by selling her own toys.

It is not the first time for Madison to help others. A few years ago, Madison asked her parents if they could all go to Africa at Christmas to help the children there.     “As long as there are homeless kids. I will never stop helping them,” Madison says.

    The snow lasted until last Friday. I opened the window this morning and saw the sun but I felt much colder.

    “You'd better go to work on foot, dear,” said my husband, “It is dangerous for you to drive.”

    I thought him right and agreed. It would take me about forty minutes to get to my hospital. There was about an hour left, so I started, with a bag of sandwich for breakfast. In the streets there was thick snow and ice and the traffic was less than before and people walked carefully. Suddenly I saw a car going fast. The driver tried to pass the crossing before the lights turned red. Maybe he didn't see two boys in the middle of the street. His car knocked down one boy and stopped just in front of the police box.

    People crowded around the boy at once. I rushed out of the gathering crowd(聚集的人群) and was going to look him over. But a man pushed me aside and said, “Step back, please. I^'ve had a course in first aid.”

    I had to stand and watch his ministrations(救助) for a few minutes. Then I said to him, “When you need a doctor, sir, I'm already here.”

    A long time ago, there lived a very old man. He was so old that he could not see or hear very well. He also could not walk very well, or eat very well for his hand shook. From that day on, the old man sat with the family when they had their meals. Even when the old man's food fell here and there, the son and the daughter-in-law did not say anything.
