When Daniel woke up yesterday morning, he found he was a bit late for school, so he started running to catch the bus. Moments later, he saw a dog, but not its lead. He tripped over the lead and fell down. He jumped up quickly, went on running and got on the bus. After a while an old coach broke down in the middle of the road, and the driver couldn't move it. It was eight o' clock, the middle of the rush hour, so it soon created a terrible traffic jam. The bus driver tried to go round the coach. Unfortunately a taxi was coming in the opposite direction. The driver tried to stop the taxi, but he couldn't prevent the accident-the taxi crashed into the front of the bus! Luckily nobody was hurt.

When Daniel finally got to school out of breath, the science lesson had been on for five minutes. Daniel said sorry to the teacher and sat at his desk. He reached out for his school bag-no,it was nowhere to be found.

We walked all afternoon with Infadoos and Scragga. Their men walked about a hundred metres ahead of us.

“When did your people, the Kukuana, come to this place?”

“They came from the north many thousands of moons ago,” Infadoos explained. “When they reached the mountains, they could go no farther. They stayed here where the land is good and there is water.”

“Do you live here in peace?” I asked.

“There have been two wars. Once an army came down from the north, but we killed most of them. Soon after that, we fought among ourselves.” He said, “The king at that time had two sons—twins. When he died, both young men wanted to be king. One of the twins, Twala, killed the other and became king.”

“Did the dead man have a wife and children?” I asked. I knew that if he did, the fighting could start again one day.

“Yes. He had a wife, Imotu, and a son, Ignosi. They ran away.” He pointed to a village a short way ahead. “That is the village where Imotu and Ignosi first hid,” he said. “We shall stay there tonight.”

As soon as we were within a mile or so of the village, an army of men came out. As we passed them, they shouted a welcome.

Their women were in the village. They stopped whatever they were doing to watch us pass by, but they were not rude. As soon as we were comfortable in a hut, they came with milk, honey, and cooked food.

A young man brought a fat young ox which he killed and cut into pieces. We took a few pieces for ourselves and gave him the rest. We don't want them to think we were selfish.(选自《所罗门王的宝藏》,有删节)

2 the teacher said this task was special,Rita felt disappointed. However,she decided to try her best with her new responsibility. She began to study and 3 the ant ,She made the box a comfortable home for the ant,and it grew much bigger than anyone expected.

Rita's 4 caught the attention of her science teacher,Mr Thompson. He turned her work into a class project,and Rita became the class expert on ants.

As the school year progressed,Rita's classmates became more interested in the ant project. They 5 to ask her questions and watch the ant's behavior. Rita shared her knowledge with her classmates 6 . She even made a report to share her findings with the whole school during the science fair.

At the end of the year,the school chose Rita's class as the best of the year. They also7 Rita for her hard work and how she turned a small responsibility into something big. Rita learned that every task,no matter how small,could make a big 8 . She also learned that sometimes the most unexpected things can lead to great success.

Several years ago, I moved to Spain. I thought my Spanish would improve quickly. I gave up everything about the{#blank#}1{#/blank#}learning: classes, books, exercises and so on. I did nothing but speak o native(本国的)speakers. It was easy and fun!

However, about a year later, I noticed that my Spanish had hardly improved. I still spoke with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} grammar structures(结构)and sentence patterns as well as limited words(有限的词汇).

Sometimes I {#blank#}3{#/blank#}felt that my Spanish was getting worse. It made me upset. What was wrong? I wondered.

I {#blank#}4{#/blank#} started to realize that because I didn't get training in other aspects(方面), I would not {#blank#}5{#/blank#} any progress as I liked. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} I started to go back to my old language learning {#blank#}7{#/blank#} , including reading books, watching movies and doing grammar and reading exercises. And they {#blank#}8{#/blank#} ! I quickly made progress. I could hold more difficult conversations.

To learn the language, one should speak it first and then use it! That's the secret to {#blank#}9{#/blank#}and effective(有效的)language learning, right? Well, I know now, that if that's all you do, progress will come very fast. Considering the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} at which native speakers speak, you don't really have the time to learn new words or grammar structures. To learn a language more effectively, you need to spend some time on other trainings besides {#blank#}11{#/blank#}.

 阅读下面的短文并填空。每空限填一词。

Here are some accidents which often happen to children:

◆ Scalds (烫伤) — Small children don't understand that hot water and hot drinks can be dangerous. It only takes a cup of tea or coffee, or a bath that's very hot to scald a child badly.

◆ Falls— Children of all ages fall and hurt themselves from time to time. For babies, the danger is rolling off the edge (从边缘滚下来) of something like beds, chairs or tables. It's very easy for babies of two to four to fall off a piece of furniture, down the stairs, out of a window or off a balcony (阳台).

◆ Burns— Many children die in house fires and more are badly burnt. A cigarette (香烟) can easily start a fire. A child can also be burnt by a hot iron or matches.

◆ Cuts— Glass causes the most serious cuts. So keep away from broken bottles, doors or windows.

(1) Small children don't understand:

◆ Hot water and drinks are not {#blank#}1{#/blank#} for them.

(2) What often happen to children and babies?

◆ Children of all ages may fall and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} themselves again and again.

◆ For babies of two to four, they can fall off furniture, stairs and so on {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

(3) Why are many children easily burnt?

◆ Because a cigarette can easily {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a house fire.

◆ A hot iron or {#blank#}5{#/blank#} can make kids burnt.
