In order to know a foreign language thoroughly （完全地） , four things are necessary. Firstly, we must understand the language when we hear {#blank#}1{#/blank#} spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (correct) with confidence and without hesitation（犹豫）. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} we must be able to read the language, and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are grammatically correct.

    There is no easy way to success in language learning. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}  good memory is of great help, but it is not enough only {#blank#}5{#/blank#} ( memorize) rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long list of words and {#blank#}6{#/blank#} meaning, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} we are satisfied with only a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. “Learn through use” is a good piece of {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (advise) for those {#blank#}9{#/blank#} are studying a new language. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (write) the language whenever we can.

    Katherine Commale is a 12-year-old girl from Pennsylvania. At the age of five, she learnt that {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Africa malaria (疟疾) killed a child every 45 seconds. She also learnt that people wouldn't get malaria if they slept in a bed net (蚊帐). The cost of a bed net {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (be) 10 dollars at that time.

    "It made me {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (sad) to know about those poor children," Katherine says. "I wanted {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (raise) money to buy bed nets for African Children." So she had a good idea.

    Five-year-old Katherine {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (make) speeches at churches and schools. She showed people how important bed nets were for African families. After {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (listen)to her speeches, many people donated (捐献) money. Katherine sent the money to Nothing But Nets. That organization sent bed nets to Africa.

    Besides, Katherine had {#blank#}7{#/blank#} good idea soon. She decided to make gift certificates (礼券 )to sell for the Christmas holiday. On each 10-dollar certificate there was {#blank#}8{#/blank#} message. It explained that a bed net would be sent to Africa. With the help of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (she) brother and friends, she got more and more certificate orders.

    Katherine has helped raise more than $200，000 for Nothing But Nets.

    "It makes me happy to help African children," says Katherine. "I won't stop {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (work) until everyone in Africa has a bed net."

    I recently heard a story about a famous scientist. Because of his great achievements, he was thought to be more creative than a common person. When he was asked why he was able{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(do) this, he gave the answer. It all came from an experience with his mother when he was about three years old. "I tried{#blank#}2{#/blank#}get a bottle of milk from the fridge but it fell, spilling(溢出）the milk all over the floor— a sea of milk! I was frightened and I didn't know what to do!" he said.

    His mother heard the noise and got into the kitchen. "I{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(consider) how to explain this to you, Mum, "he said. Instead of{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(punish) him, she said, "Robert, what a great mess you have made! I haven't seen{#blank#}5{#/blank#}a sea of milk before! Well, since the milk has already been spilled, would you like{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(play) in the milk for a while? We will clean it{#blank#}7{#/blank#}after that. "Then, he did so. After a few minutes, his mother said, "You know, Robert, whenever you {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(make) a mess like this, finally you have to do it by yourself. "He used a sponge（海绵）and together they cleaned up the spilled milk.

    His mother then said, " You know, we failed to successfully carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands just{#blank#}9{#/blank#}. Let's go out in the yard and fill the bottle with water to see if you can discover a way to carry it. "Then the little boy learned that if he grasped(抓紧）the bottle at the top with both hands, he could carry it without{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(drop) it.

No matter how far a person is from his home, he will manage to go home to spend the festival with his family. Children love Christmas {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Santa Claus brings them a lot of gifts. Small children believe on Christmas Eve, if they do well the past year, Santa Claus{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(come) and bring them good luck. Santa Claus is a fat old man {#blank#}6{#/blank#} long white beard and in red clothes. Santa Claus{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(fly) through the sky with bags full {#blank#}8{#/blank#} nice gifts. When children go to bed at night, they put stockings at the end of their bed. They believe {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Santa Claus will fill the stockings with gifts and other good things they want. Actually, their parents put the gifts into the stockings. The true meaning of Christmas is {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(give) love and joy to people around us.
