    Mica and her little sister got a tree house this year. "I'm Mica! I love my tree house!" This $28,000 tree house is a gift from their parents. Almost three metres above the ground, the platform (平台) was built between two large trees. "One of the things I really wanted was a little door within the big door. If you go up, you'll find that there is a door handle, which is of the kids' height. And there is an adult size door as well. I told the designer to make it feel like a secret hideout (躲藏处)," said Mica's mother Keenan.

    Bala Sundar and his wife came to America 20 years ago. Unlike Keenan and her husband, who bought a tree house for their daughters, the Sundars got one for themselves. "We wanted to have a regular place where we can relax. So we bought it," he said. With beds, tables and windows, it's a welcoming, comfortable space to spend a summer night.

    Both of these amazing tree houses were created by Dan Wright. He's the founder of Tree Top Builders Inc., and has built more than 400 tree houses since he started the company in 2003. "I think the sense of freedom and independence is why Americans can resonate (共鸣) with tree houses. They get people up off the ground and, for kids, their parents can't reach them anymore. They are up looking down, getting a new perspective on life," said Wright.

    Since the beginning of history, man has been fascinated by the idea of living forever, of winning the fight against death and disease. So far, this has only remained a dream, though a very powerful one. Many people have wondered whether it would be possible to find a way to preserve human bodies, and what would be the best way to preserve human bodies.

    It has long been known that meat or fruit can be kept fresh for long periods by freezing; in ancient China, for example, food was stored with ice to keep it fresh. This method could also be useful for preserving humans, and in fact many people have explored this possibility.

    However, most living beings that exist under warm conditions die when frozen. This is because of the harmful effects of freezing ice crystals, which are not only larger than the volume of the water originally in the cells, but also form sharp cutting shapes that harm the cells.

    In the 1940s Dr B. J. Luyet and a group of scientists in England were working on the problem of freezing cells without damaging them. Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause of the damage, Luyet suggested removing some or all of the water from the cells before freezing them.

    Using living cells from chicken, Luyet and his assistants discovered that they could partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture of the white part of an egg and glycerin, a clear thick liquid made chiefly from fats and oils. Some success was obtained. The chicken cells were dried, frozen for a period of time, and then carefully unfrozen.

    Almost all the cells recovered when they reached normal temperature. Since then, the cooling of whole animals to a temperature very much below freezing point for later unfreezing has become more of a possibility, and the glycerin method would probably be used to accomplish this. When this can be done completely and successfully, science will have moved much closer to its aim of freezing and storing incurable patients until the day they can be cured.

    A new camera made by a company named Netatmo has facial recognition software (人脸识别系统) that can tell parents at work that their children have returned from school, or that a package (包裹) has been taken to their home. It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home.

    Janina Mattausch is a product marketing manager for Netatmo.

    "The common security (安全) cameras at present are not that smart. So, they can tell you if something is moving but they don't necessarily know if it's a human being or, ah, if it's your kid- they don't know the difference, so they will warn (警告) you all the time."

    When family members enter a home, the new camera "recognizes" (识别) them and sends information to the owner's smartphone. The owner can choose to see the video then or later. But if an unknown person enters a home, the camera will send the owner a warning that will cause an alarm to sound on the owner's smartphone.

    That is what happened recently to a smart home camera owner named Damien. He lives in Paris.

    "On a Friday I was at work, attending a big monthly meeting when my phone warned. At first I told myself 'Oh, it must be a mistake, maybe I have to set the system again.' —but the notice on my phone was telling me that there was a movement in my flat and also a face that the software did not recognize."

    He watched the video and was very surprised by what he saw.

    "I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on. I was watching it live on video. So I felt totally unbelievable, frozen. I asked a workmate to take me back home as fast as possible and I called the police on the way."

    With the help of the video, the police found the intruder (闯入者) later that day.

    People don't like trash. Trash is smelly, dirty, ugly, broken and useless. That's why we throw it out. But everyone knows that trash influences our environment. It can pollute our land, water and air. So it's important to recycle our trash as much as possible.

    Some Americans were very interested in recycling and they were curious about what really happened to their trash. So, what did they do? They became detectives and decided to "Follow that trash!"

    They took some items out of their recycling bin and put electronic tags (标签) on them. The tags sent signals to a computer so people could follow their trash on its journey. They found that some trash only travelled a few kilometers but much of it went into landfills.

    Waste management companies in America think this detective work will be helpful to them. Dealing with waste is very expensive and this u trash tracking" will help them to become more useful. It will save their time and money.

    However, the trash detectives say it's also important to reduce the amount of trash we produce. After all, if we produce less waste, we won't have to worry about where it goes.
