    Nadia Comaneci, a famous gymnast (体操运动员) , was born in Romania in 1961.

    When she was doing cartwheels (侧手翻) on the playground at the age of 6, a PE teacher saw her. He told her family that she was very good and advised Nadia to train in the capital of Romania. Although it was a long way from her home, Nadia went because she loved gymnastics (体操).

    After that, she trained hard and took part in lots of competitions. In 1975, she was named as one of the Athletes of the 20th Century.

    In 1976, Nadia went to the Olympics in Canada. She was so fantastic in the competition that everyone waited for the score, a high score. But the scoreboard showed 1.00!

    Everyone was surprised. There wasn't a sound for a moment. Then a voice came, "Ladies and gentlemen, Nadia Comaneci…10!"

    The audience (观众) cheered very loudly. So what happened? Well, when the scoreboard was built, no one thought a score of 10. 00 was possible. The decimal point (小数点) was in the wrong place! In fact, the scoreboard only had three digits (数位) to show scores, such as 9. 50 or 9. 85 at that time.

    In the 1976 Summer Olympics, Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect 10, which was thought impossible before. From then on, she was looked as a hero. In 1984, she got retired (退休的).

Once, there were two hard-working children, Che Yin and Sun Kang. They loved reading, but their families were poor and didn't have enough money to buy lamp oil (灯油) for the children to study at night. How did they get over the difficulty? Here are their stories.

Che Yin's story began on a hot summer night. He saw fireflies (萤火虫) flying and an idea came into his mind. He caught some fireflies, put them in a bag and hung it up as a lamp. He spent all of his summer nights reading like this.

The other story happened in winter. Sun Kang woke up on a cold night. He saw the moon shine so brightly (明亮地) on the snow and it made the night brighter. "I can read with it!" he thought. So he took his books outside and read, even though it was very cold. 

Later, Che Yin and Sun Kang became successful. Their stories were turned into Chinese words "nangying yingxue". Difficulties cannot stop young minds from learning. If there is a will, there is always light on the road to knowledge (知识).

Once upon a time, there was a huge crab(螃) living in the mountains

One day, the crab decided to return to the ocean. While he was moving to the sea, the whole earth shook.

An old man felt the land shake. He shouted loudly to his villagers,"We must build a raft(木筏)! Quickly! Quickly!

"Why should we do that?" asked one of them

"Because he is so massive that when he dives into the ocean, it will cause a flood!" The old man replied, "We must build a raft big enough to hold all of us and many animals!"

The villagers accepted his warming and began working together. Some of them cut down trees, while others were busy building the raft. After seeing what villagers did, the animals of the forest sensed that danger was coming so they joined in the work as well. The monkeys and the water buffalo wove(编) ropes, while the horses and the tiny mouse deer helped to pull trees from the forest. Finally, the old man tied one end of the rope to the raft and the other end to a big tree.

"What is that for?"asked a child.

The old man smiled, "This will help us find our way home."

Finally, the raft was ready. Not long after, this big crab completed his journey and jumped into the sea! Suddenly, the huge waves flooded the land. The villagers and animals climbed onto the life raft, which was swept away by the rushing water. People and animals were all in fear!

But the raft suddenly came to a stop because of the rope which was tied to the tree. People and animals hugged together for warmth. They sang to keep their spirits when they floated(漂浮) on the raft

The crab finally settled on the sea bottom. Soon after, the sea level returned to its original position, and the passengers found themselves back on land. Both humans and animals were happy to be alive! They turned to the old man, "Thanks for saving us by getting us to build a raft!"

But he smiled, "Oh, it was not me that saved you. We worked together-the men and women and children, and the animals too. When we work together, there's nothing we can't do."

 Wu Jingxun, 46, is from Foshan, Guangdong Province. About 15 years ago, when he came to volunteer at a village primary school in Sichuan Province for the first time, he found the kids there didn't have enough books to read. He also found that there weren't any books at the students' homes.

 After that, Wu and his friends at Friends Camp, a volunteer organization (组织), bought many books for the primary school.

 One year later, in 2007, when they visited the school again, they found that children in the village did not know how to read. Even though you put great books in front of them, they just looked through the picture books. They didn't learn from the books. This made Wu and his friends think how to teach children to read.

 In some good primary schools, grade-three students can finish reading 15 books a year and, sometimes even more. But, in poor villages, grade-six students only know about 1,800 Chinese characters(汉字).

Now Wu focuses on(专注) picture books and science as he volunteers to teach children how to read. "If they can take up reading as a good habit, they can benefit (受益) more. They can read in their free time but not just play games or use Douyin on their phones," Wu said.
