Dear Miss Li,

I'd like to thank you for giving money to "Animal Helpers", I'm sure you know that this group was set up to help people like me. You helped to make it possible for me to have Lucky. Lucky makes a big difference to my life. Let me tell you my story.

What would it be like to be blind or deaf? Or imagine you can't walk or use your hands easily. Most people would never think about this, but many people have these difficulties, I can't use my arms or legs well, so normal things like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors or carrying things are difficult for me. Then one day last year, a friend of mine helped me out. She talked to Animal Helpers about getting me a special trained dog. She also thought a dog might cheer me up. I love animals and I was excited about the idea of having a dog.

After six months of training with a dog at Animal Helpers, I was able to bring him home. My dog's name is Lucky—a good name for him because I feel very lucky to have him. You see, I'm only able to have a "dog-helper" because of your kindness! Lucky is very clever and understands many English words. He can understand me when I give him orders. For example, I say, "Lucky! get my book," and he does it at once.

Lucky is a fantastic dog. I'll send you a photo of him if you like, and I could show you how he helps me. Thank you again for changing my life. Best wishes, Ben Smith

Yu Minhong, president of New Oriental Education, shared his ideas with the young after the English speech competition of the 14th China Daily. Here is some of his advice to young people:

“One suggestion I'd like to give you is that it's important to do what you like without fear of failure. And the process(过程)of working toward your dreams matters more than the results. Young people should take chances to show off talents. Take competitions like this one as an example: If you are afraid to fail, you'll never get the chance to stand on the stage and make a speech. Above all, it's most important to take part.

Another suggestion I want to give you is to read books. It is not easy to keep reading every day. For me, it is much more difficult and challenging to keep reading and taking notes every day than it is to walk 10,000 steps.”

In his speech, Yu also shared his view on life. He chose a different life rather than a more successful one. He uses the famous lines of American poet Robert Frost (1874–1963) to make his point:“Two roads diverged (分叉) in a wood, and I … took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”Yu pointed out, “Your happiness should not be what others think you should run after, but instead you should decide what it is. It is you who should make choices for your own life.”

To protect the environment, China has put a ban(禁令) on thin plastic bag (plastic bag thinner than 0.025 mm). From June 1,2008, China stopped the production, sale and use of these plastic bags to the public.

Plastic bags can cause "white pollution", because they can take 400-1,000 years to break down. They pollute the soil(土壤) and water. Plastic bags also cause a serious danger to animals. Animals often mistake plastic bags for food. Thousands of them die each year after eating plastic bags.

So what kind of bags will be the best to use when we are shopping? Recently some students made their own shopping bags. Most students used old clothes to make their bags. They painted pictures like the Olympic rings on them. But Li Mei had a more traditional way to make her hag. She weaved(编织) a bamboo(竹子) basket. It was not an easy job. With her grandfather's help, Li Mei spent the whole afternoon making it.

What can we do? Use environmentally friendly (环保的) shopping bags instead of plastic ones and try to recycle the ones we have.

Baozi is one of the common Chinese foods for breakfast. Who would have thought that this simple meal would become a leading character in a film, and even win an Oscar?

On February 24, 2019, the short film Bao won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. In the film, a small baozi comes to life and becomes the "son" of a lonely Chinese woman in an immigrant(移民) family in Canada.

Domee Shi, Pixar's first Chinese-canadian woman director, got the idea from her own experience. When Shi grew up, she was busy working and spent little time with her mother.

Bao explores the life of an empty-nest Chinese Canadian mother who feels lonely after her son leaves home to go for his own life.

In the film, many details show the way the Chinese woman loves her "son". She prepares delicious food, cleans up the house carefully and always buys him snacks. These details are true to the strong and protective love of Chinese parents for their children

Traditionally, Chinese parents don't say 'I love you' to their kids. They express it with food or by fussing(小题大做) over them. "I didn't use dialogue in the film because I wanted it to be a story that spoke to everyone around the world." said Shi at an interview.

Moreover, this film can serve as a bridge to help parents and children better understand each other and learn how to express love.

"I am so busy with my study. I don't even have enough time to have breakfast." said Zhangli, a middle school student. Do you have the same problem   A   Zhangli? Researchers at the University of Iowa analyzed 18 years of data on 6,550 people over 40 years old who had no history of heart problems. They were given regular surveys   B   included the question, "how often do you eat breakfast? Most (59 percent)ate breakfast every day, but 5.1 percent never did, 10.9 percent rarely did, and 25 percent would miss for a few days. The team found that①早餐习惯与心脏病风险之间存在明显关联.Those who didn't eat in the morning were up to 87 percent more likely to develop heart problems.

"It's believed that ②an, important, day, breakfast, the, is, meal, of, but there has been an increasing prevalence (普遍)of missing breakfast over the past 50 years in the United States, with as many as 23.8 percent of young people missing breakfast every day," the researchers said. "However, studies on the health effects of missing breakfast are rare."

The team pointed out a few factors which could underlie this connection. ③Firstly, those who don't eat breakfast may be more likely to snack unhealthily. Secondly, breakfast may help to balance blood sugar levels and control blood pressure. The findings were published on the American College of Cardiology. Some days later a similar study showed people who missed breakfast and ate a late dinner were less likely to survive a heart attack. And Borja Ibanez, a doctor of medicine, also pointed out those who didn't eat breakfast were more likely to smoke, be lack of exercise, and drink alcohol.
