However, the rich man wanted to make his son realize that his lifestyle was extremely rich and that poor people suffered a lot. He planned a day's visit to the entire town to show him the life of the poor people.

The father and the son took a chariot and visited the entire town. They returned home after two days. The father was happy that his son was very quiet after seeing the poor people honoring(尊敬) the rich man and after witnessing the sufferings of the poor.

The rich man asked his son, "Dear boy, how was the trip? Have you enjoyed it?"

"Yes my dad, it was a great trip with you," the son replied.

"So, what did you learn from the trip?" the father asked.

    The son was silent.

"Finally you have realized how the poor suffer and how they actually live," said the father.

"No father," replied the son. He added, "We have only two dogs, they have 10 dogs. We have a big pool in our garden, but they have a large bay(港湾) without any end! We have luxurious and expensive lights from various countries, but they have countless stars lighting their nights. We have a house on a small piece of land, but they have abundant fields that go beyond the horizon(视野). We are protected by huge and strong walls around our property(财产), but they bond with(与……连着) each other and surround themselves with their fellow beings. We have to buy food from them, but they are so rich that they can grow their own food."

In ancient China, a woman told the best stories. She married to the emperor (皇帝). Sadly, one day, this woman became ill and died. Everyone thought the emperor would soon find another favorite among his wives, but the emperor was very sad. He spent more and more time in his garden, and less and less time caring for the needs of his people. Everyone in the kingdom was worried.

One day, a priest (牧师) passed when some children were playing with their dolls. The dolls made dancing shadows on the wall. This gave the priest an idea. He knew the stories the emperor's wife used to tell. What if he could bring those stories to life?

The priest made a puppet (木偶) out of bits of clay (黏土). He painted the puppet to look somewhat like the emperor's wife. When the puppet was finished, the priest silently walked into the emperor's garden, carrying his puppet, a candle and a curtain. He placed the curtain near the emperor's chair. He placed his candle, his puppet and himself behind the curtain. He waited for the emperor to appear.

The emperor did not even notice the curtain at first. The dancing shadow drew his eyes. As the priest moved the puppet behind the curtain, he told wonderful stories as the emperor's wife. It seemed as if his wife was spending time with him. The emperor was no longer sad. At the end of each busy day, the emperor went into his garden to visit his shadow wife and hear her stories once again. That is how shadow puppets first began.

 Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题) (12分)

It was Saturday that day. Luke was wearing his basketball clothes, waiting for his chance to play but until last week, nobody asked him to play. Although the 18-year-old student does well in playing basketball, his coach wouldn't like to bring Luke into play. This is because it isn't easy for Luke to see things even when he wears glasses. He has to try his best to aim at the basketball hoop by focusing on the right corner of his glasses. His mother said that he was born with cerebral palsy

On the high school's Senior Night last week, Luke's coach finally called him to play during the final minute of the game. With the teammates already coming to give him a warm welcome, Luke got into position as the crowd cheered him up.

"I want to get him in. It was Senior Night, the most important moment for every player in the team." the head coach told the reporters, "If there was a chance for him, I would want to take advantage of it."

Once the game was back in play, one of Luke's teammates passed him the ball. Though he had been practising shooting hoops since he was in the third grade, this was the first time he had ever taken a shot on his high school basketball team. He took a deep breath to release the nervous feeling.

As the watchers waited, Luke took the shot and dropped the ball. It fell through the net, hardly touching the hoop. He made it! In fact, his score helped the team win the game. All his teammates came to hug him, showing great admiration and respect.

"I heard the watchers calling my name," Luke told the news reporters. "They were jumping and shouting. I still can't believe I was awarded the title of MVP (Most Valuable Player) of this game."

① basketball hoop n. 篮筐 ② cerebral palsy n. 大脑性麻痹 ③admiration n. 钦佩
