Thumbs Down to Texting (屈指发短信)

    Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?

    Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling in our thumbs. Our thumbs were not made for pushing small buttons, over and over. Scientists call this problem RSI. We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many sick people with RSI. She says we need to see how much time we are spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10-15 minutes at once, we could have problems in the future.

    As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can cause the same problem. So more and more people could find themselves with RSI. Among them, most are university students and teenagers, as they do not know the risks of spending so much time using computer, video games and mobile phones. If we don't do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.

    One day a little boy came into a fruit shop. He had five dollars and wanted to buy some apples. He said to the shop owner,“Give me $5 worth of apples, please.”

    When the shop owner gave him the apples, the boy counted them and felt very surprised. Then he said:“Last Friday, my mother bought apples here for $5, too. Why did you give me fewer apples?” “Don't ask questions, boy. I have no time for questions.”

    “Excuse me, sir.” said the little boy, “but…”

    “It is all right, my boy,” said the shop owner, “Don't you know? The fewer apples you get, the less fruit you will have to carry.” “All right.” said the boy and he gave $4 to the shop owner. He was just going to leave the shop when he heard the words:“Come back! You must pay me $5.” But the boy replied: “Don't you know? The fewer dollars you get, the less money you will have to count.”

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Keep your food safe. At night put it in bags. Hang the bags from the trees. Eat food before it goes bad(变质). Keep food and water in closed boxes or bottles.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Find a place for your camp an hour before it gets dark. Look for a dry place. Don't make your camp under trees or very near a river. Look for firewood before it gets dark.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}In very hot countries, don't walk in the middle of the day. Walk in the early morning before the sun conies up.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}There are dangerous animals in some countries. Before you put on your shoes in the morning, hit them on the ground. There may be animals inside them. Do the same with your sleeping bag before you go to sleep.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}If you are walking, you need to drink lots of water. In very hot countries you may need 5~8 litres(升)of water a day. If you are thirsty, stop and drink.

    Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs. White.

    I don't remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But there were no red corrections but always a star. Sometimes even a word "Good"! That would make my heart filled with happiness, but it worried my mother.

    So one day when she went to meet Mrs. White, Mother asked her why she never corrected my mistakes, and why she never pointed out those mistakes. Mrs. White said, "The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about making sentences. I don't want to make them lose that enthusiasm (热情) with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won't ..."

    And thanks to Mrs. White, I had no qualms (顾忌) about writing what I meant even if I couldn't quite spell it out. Life isn't Perfect. It's Beautiful. She helped me understand it.
