A young man is sitting by the road eating something. A policeman is coming over. At once, the man gets up quickly and runs down the road. The policeman runs after him. The man runs very fast. But the policeman runs faster. After a few minutes, the policeman catches him. ‘Where are you going?' says the policeman. ‘You must be a criminal (罪犯) if you run like that when you see a policeman.' ‘No, no,' says the man, ‘I'm not a criminal. I'm just too fat, you see. The doctor says to me that I must always run fast after eating.' ‘I see,' says the policeman, ‘You are running to help to lose some weight (重量).'

    Years ago, Tareq and his family left their home in Bangladesh to New York City, US. Tareq was only 12 years old then.

    In Bangladesh, Tareq's dad was a farmer. He worked hard for little pay. Every day, Tareq walked 6 kilometres to school. After school, he had to work on the farm.

    But Tareq had fun. He loved singing and playing cricket (板球) with his friends. One day Tareq's dad told him they would move to New York City. Tareq's dad found a new job there, and he thought life would be better there.

    In his new school, Tateq tried his best to understand his teachers, but it was quite hard. Also, he had few friends.

    Things changed when he started high school. His high school had students from 30 countries and a cricket team. Tareq was excited to join the cricket team. He was happy to be with kids who loved the game as much as he did. He practised before and after school. "Playing with the cricket team was the first time I felt accepted in America," he said. "When you play, it doesn't matter what grade you' re in or what language you speak."

    During his second year in high school, Tareq was named the cricket team' s most valuable player(最有价值球员).

    Tareq will go to university next year. He said, "Most universities don't have a cricket team. But that's OK, because cricket was there for me when I needed it most."

    Mrs Smith is going shopping with her son. They are looking for a present for Mr Smith's birthday. Mrs Smith wants to buy her husband a new camera and Tom wants to buy his father a jumper.

    They drive to the department store on the high street. Mrs Smith uses the lift to go to the Electrical Department on the third floor and Tom goes straight to the Men's Clothing Department on the first floor.

    When Mrs Smith gets to the Electrical Department, she finds that cameras are sold in the Photography Department on the ground floor. So she takes the lift down and asks the sales assistant there for some help. She doesn't know much about cameras and needs some advice. The sales assistant recommends(推荐) an automatic camera by Olympus, but it is too expensive. She asks the assistant if he has anything a little cheaper and he tells her about a special offer on the Pentax range. It still seems expensive, so she thanks the assistant and decides to shop around first.

    Meanwhile, Tom is looking at the jumpers. He only has ￡10, so he can't buy most of them. He sees his mother and they decide to go to the smaller shops round the corner.

    On the morning of the day when he left Compton High School in Los Angeles, 18-year-old Allan Guei asked seven of his classmates to come together. Guei, a star on the basketball team, expressed he was giving away he $40,000 he'd won in a competition and was dividing it among them. The room filled with shouts and cheers. "Everyone went mad with excitement," he says. "They were surprised that I would do something like that for them."

    In November 2000, Guei's family moved from the Ivory Coast to the United States, and he immediately took up basketball." When I first came to California, the Lakers were winning: it was Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal era (时代),"he recalls." I just fell in love with the game."

    A few years later, he was playing for the school. Then, in March, he entered a free-throw competition at the school, and the town saw just how big a team player Guei really is—both on and off the court (球场).

    In the first round, each of the eight contestants (竞争者) took ten shots, and the top four shooters advanced." I was one of the final four, but I really didn't shoot that well," Guei says." I was nervous!"" In the second round, however, he took the winning shot. He went home with the prize of $ 40,000.

    A few months before Guei left school, he was offered a full scholarship (奖学金) to California State University, and he had an idea." I could have kept the prize money, but I was already going to college for free," Guei says. "I know the others were going to have a lot of difficulty paying for school. They needed it for their futures, so I just decided to give it away."

    Now wearing No.25 on Northridge's Matadors basketball team, Guei has little time for anything but training and studying, though he keeps in touch with most of his classmates." I know those kids. Whatever they decide to do in life is going to be something good," he says." It was just the right thing to do."

    As for his own future, Guei is still learning. "I work really hard at everything I do," he says. "But whatever happens in my future, I'm just happy that I was able to help somebody else along the way."
