"What's your name? " My fifteen-ear-old daughter, Jessica, asked a stranger on the street. Her eyes sparkled with 1 and her face wore a broad smile. I wish she could make it because she has a disability with autistic (自闭症的). I stood nearby, waiting 2 for any potential result. 

To be honest, the 3 nature of hers is a result of her disability. Ever since Jessica was real young, she had 4 right up to strangers on the street and 5 a conversation, never expecting to be refused. Children with autism don't relate well to others. As her mum, my thoughts are 6 . On one hand, I tried my best to prevent her from 7 others. On the other hand, I don't want her to be discouraged. Happily, when Jessica talks with someone, it always 8 me that people patiently answer her, although they must sense she's a bit different. 

What about this time? Would this man respond kindly or just 9 her and walk away? A few minutes later, Jessica skipped to me. Obviously, it was a successful 10 . Jessica shared with me the 11 they had talked about, which would certainly 12 my daughter's day. The man just treated her like an ordinary girl, nothing special from others. 

As we continued on our way, I felt a renewed sense full of 13 for the future. Despite my daughter's problem, an equal 14 the kind people gave her created a moment of 15 interaction.

   A year back I received a full scholarship(全额奖学金) to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, got involved in(参与) various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new chapter(篇章) of my life. I had totally packed two weeks before it was time to leave. 
    Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn't like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was so homesick and I didn't know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a ton of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn't think how lonely I felt. 
    Soon after, I began to limit food, and then I became worse. Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor weighed me, I was crazy about the number of my weight. So I continued to lower my goal, and convinced(坚信) that controlling this number was the solution for my homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies. I quickly started recovery in my mind. 
    How could I do? I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had gotten straight(连续的) A's. That's why I want to share my story—to help other students feel less lonely.

Two weeks earlier,my son,Ben,had got in touch.He'd moved to England with his mum when he was three and it had been 13 years since I'd 1 seen him.So imagine my 2 when he emailed me saying he wanted to come to visit me.

I was 3 !I arrived early at Byron Bay where we were supposed to 4 .The bay was 5 in sunshine,and there was a group of kayakers around 150m off the shore.Getting a little 6 ,I realized one kayak(皮划艇) was in 7 ."Something's not 8 !"I took off my T-shirt and 9 into the water.I saw there were two instructors on board and a man lying across the middle.He was 10 violently.Linking arms with one of the instructors,I helped 11 the young man out of the water.He was unconscious and as I looked at his face,something 12 to me.Those brown eyes were very 13 ."What's his name?"I asked the instructor."Ben,"he replied,and immediately I 14 .That stranger was my son! 

The instructors called an ambulance.15 ,after a brief stay in hospital,Ben was well enough to be allowed to 16 and later the family met up for dinner.We chatted about everything and then Ben 17 to me."I just want to say thank you,"he said."You 18 my life!"

I still can't believe what a 19 it was.I'm just so glad I was there 20 to help my son.

It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little mouths to 1 . My college education, however, didn't help me to 2 a well-paid job. I was working in a woodcutting business for just above the 3 wage. Working outdoors for 8 hours a day had caused my4 to split (裂开) and bleed at their tips in the cold, dry air.

In a small village called Brightville, there lived three friends: Kimberley, John and Alicia. They were all students at Brightville High School, each displaying unique 1 . Kimberley, a hardworking girl, always 2 for excellence. John, with his 3 spirit, always sought new experiences. Alicia was a kind and helpful girl. They shared a common dream of achieving their goals through 4 .

On a sunny day, the three friends 5 at their favorite spot near the village river. They often met there to discuss their dream and 6 each other. Kimberley always stressed the importance of setting goals. John loved exploring new things and finding 7 ways to learn. Alicia, with her caring nature, listened 8 and offered words of encouragement.

One day, they 9 an old abandoned（废弃的）library in the heart of village. Kimberley saw this as a（n）10 for their dream to come true. She suggested turning the library into a learning center for the village.

The three friends spent months cleaning and 11 the library. They reached out to the villagers, and soon, volunteers 12 them to set up the learning center. They created a friendly and 13 environment where students could come to study, read books, and seek help.

News of the learning center spread quickly, 14 students of all ages and backgrounds. The three friends devoted their after-school hours to tutoring the students. They understood that education was about developing curiosity and 15 for learning.

Pleasanton Partnerships in Education Foundation (PPIE) was started in 1987 to raise money by organizing running events for local schools. Based in Pleasanton, California, a suburb of San Francisco, the non-profit organization recently hosted a family-focused fitness event for the community. "Our event helps to bring the community together," said Mindy Louie, events and outreach manager for PPIE. "We have more than 3,000 participants, hard-working volunteers and viewers."

This year's fitness event took place on April 30 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. It featured races of two miles, five kilometers and ten kilometers. A new Kids Challenge consisted of a quarter-mile run to encourage younger children to participate. When asked to describe the run, 11-year-old Jeremy Louie said, "Fun, exciting and enjoyable." Jeremy added that he was happy to help support his school.

PPIE supports all 15 schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District, which include more than 14, 500 students and 800 teachers and staff. The nonprofit organization tries to fund programs affected by budget cuts, while encouraging fitness and athleticism. To date, the PPIE has raised over $1 million for the school district.

A local runners' group called the BURN Youth Development (B. Y. D.) participated in the fundraising. The B.Y.D. has since grown to more than 100 youth members, 30 of whom ran in April's PPIE event. Jerry Wu, the group's founder and lead coach, explained that the B.Y.D. was born to keep kids running. "Watching them running strongly and happily makes me smile every time," Jerry said.

Jerry encourages teamwork and teaches the students valuable running techniques. As a B.Y.D. member, Ollie Gu, an eighth grader, was one of the top finishers in the ten-kilometer run. He completed the race in 40 minutes and 46 seconds and won first place in the 12-to-15 year-old age group. "The race was extremely rewarding," Ollie said. "I'm looking forward to it next year."
