The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full activity. The season brings along with its strong winds and snow — an environment that's never comfortable to be in.

 This unpleasant and even frightening part of winter can be often seen in literature. In Shakespeare's King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been driven out by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering (遭受痛苦) things that are usually saved for the poorest and most unlucky human beings.

The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being driven out by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare's play, As You Like It(1599), is fitting for this poor old man's situation: "Blow, blow, thou winter wind/Thou art not so unkind/As man's ingratitude (忘恩负义)". Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity (无人性). There aren't many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.

Once winter became less of a danger to human beings, it became more positive in literary works. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature often has something to do with happy Christmas celebrations.

The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast (对比) to the fun going on indoors.

Dickens' A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element (元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal：

"Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce."

It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it.

Although winter still isn't the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it's safe to say that writers have surely "warmed up" since Shakespeare's days.

A new type of train that can work under temperatures as low as -40℃ runs on the line. The new train can stand the coldest weather and provide Braille (盲文). It has become attractive in the world. Many foreigners come to China to experience the new type train. Chinese people use their wisdom and hard work to tell the world that they are going to have a bright future. 

 The greatest wonders of the ancient world art are usually hard to miss. For example, you can't walk past Egypt's pyramids without noticing them. They' re right in your face. But not the Nazca Lines in southern Peru.

 These ancient drawings don't rise before you on huge stones. They' re geoglyphs(地画). They' re seen in the desert sands. There are hundreds of them. Some are so large that the best way to see them is from the window ofa plane. That's how thousands of visitors see them each year.

 Yet these wonders weren't noticed for nearly 1,500 years. A researcher first found some geoglyphs in Nazca(the Nazca Lines) in 1927. But nearly 150 geoglyphs weren't discovered until many years later. It took technology such as drones(无人机) to find them.

 Researchers still have many questions about the geoglyphs. And the answers are unclear. Here's what we do know: The area's pre- Incan Nazca people created the geoglyphs. This was between 500 BCE and 500 CE. How did they make them? By moving away some of the dark rocks that covered the ground. This showed the lighter- colored desert sand below.

 Many of the Nazca Lines show the natural world, like animals and plants. And then there are some that aren't from nature. One example was found in 2019. It's of a strange creature(创造物) with many eyes and mouths. Resenrchers say this shows that the Nazca people may have had a taste for the magical.

 So why were the geoglyphs created in the first place? Researchers think they may have been part of rituals(仪式) for rain and crops. Certain geoglyphs may have shown where the rituals were being held. Others could have led travelers to those places.

 Then again, these are all guesses. Only one thing is clear: The Nazcas found a way to draw lasting lines in the always- changing sands of time.

I was doing the work in the garden yesterday. It was a soft evening and I was   making the most of it when I heard a neighbor's voice coming from the path out of our garden. 

I found there was a man lying on his back on the path with his eyes closed. I   recognized him. I had seen him doing the drunkard's(酒鬼) walk along that path several times. 

I stopped to walk out. " Do you need some help?"I asked. 

He opened his eyes and said, " Probably. " Then he told me because of arthritis(关节炎) he couldn't walk well at the most of times. I thought I should do it when he asked to help him go home where he lived a few hundred metres away. 

I tried to let him walk under his own strength with me guiding him but that   was getting us nowhere. It was easier to carry him, but that would be a real insult(侮辱) to him. So, I held his left hand with my left hand and grabbed his belt with my right hand. Then we started walking slowly. 

On the way he told me his name, what he had worked as, what holidays he had been, how wonderful his granddaughter was, what his wife's name was, and what a hard time she would give him when he got home!

Thank goodness! His wife wasn't in when we walked forty- five minutes back to his home. 

If we wait until we feel good about helping before we help, then people will go unhelped and we will become the ones who end up walking on by. 

①Sometimes you may find it hard to make more progress(进步) in your study. At this time, I think you need to change yourself. Here are some great ways for you to make more progress. 

②First, use notebooks. Take one notebook with you in class and write down what the teacher says. This way will help you remember things well. 

③Then, have a good sleep. Sleep is really important to each of us. Middle school students need to sleep at least(至少) nine hours a night. But do you know how to have a good sleep? First of all, try to keep the same sleeping time every night, even at weekends. Then, drink a glass of milk before you go to bed. I think these are good ways to help you have a good sleep. 

④Next, know when you work best. There are many studies showing advantages(好处) of night- time studying and early- morning studying. If you work late at night, make sure to give yourself some time to sleep in the morning. 

⑤Last, make good use of your learning way. Find out as many learning ways as possible(可能) first, and then try to find which way is appropriate for you and use it often.
