The Peasants (Ⅱ)

At noon they hoe up weeds;

Their sweat drips on the soil.

Who knows the rice that feeds

Is the fruit of hard toil!

Food is a necessity for survival. But do you know how much work goes into producing it? The poem The Peasants (II), {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (write) by Li Shen, a Tang Dynasty poet, shows {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (we) the hardship of the peasants.

The first two lines describe a common scene {#blank#}3{#/blank#} peasants are working their lands at noon with the sun {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (hang) high in the sky, sweat dripping. In the last two lines, the poet {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (direct) points out that the rice we eat is the fruit of peasants' hard work.

Simple as the poem is in its language, it is profound in the theme, reminding people {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the significance of treasuring food. According to the FAO, an estimated 1.3 billion tons of food, or one-third of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} total food produced for human consumption, is wasted globally each year. Therefore, it's highly suggested that every grain of rice {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (value). In China, we have adopted a law on food waste {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (offer) legal backing to the country's efforts which not only safeguard food security {#blank#}10{#/blank#} promote the traditional virtue of thrift (节俭) as well.

Next time you want to throw away food, please think twice.

When I was a little boy, the dinner on the eve of the Spring Festival was{#blank#}1{#/blank#}I looked forward to most. It was not only for the delicious food that we seldom got to eat, but also an opportunity to have the family gathered together. I would run {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (happy) with my sister in the house, while my mom was preparing food in the kitchen. She would put some tokens in some dumplings; candies for a sweet life, and peanuts for a long and healthy {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. In the evening, we would sit around the table, toasted each other and enjoyed the homemade dishes, which tasted much better than anything {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (cook) in the restaurant.

However, for the last three years, we {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (eat) out for the Spring Festival family dinner, and we have enjoyed it no less than eating at home.{#blank#}6{#/blank#} I don't understand why some people refuse this change. Can't they admit that the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (prepare) for a dinner is hard work? It is not worth the effort of spending so much time cooking a single meal. We work all year, so why can't one day be about spending time with family and {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (relax). Eating out is a good choice and it has nothing to do {#blank#}9{#/blank#} loss of traditions. We still have the dinner with the same people, just in a different place. The occasion is more {#blank#}10{#/blank#}_(enjoy) without that tiring cooking.

What does traveling mean? Visit, enjoy and discover.

Every year hundreds and thousands of people come to the UK. And London, the capital city {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (be) usually their first stop. What can they see? What can they experience?

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (get) around in London is not difficult. There is the underground train, the oldest in the world, or the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (tradition) double-decker bus (双层公共汽车). A boat trip along the River. Thames takes you {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the Tower of London.

Going around the city center on foot is easy. The maps in the streets will show you {#blank#}5{#/blank#} is around you in five-minute walk. You can {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (amaze) get a great view of the city from meters upon a huge wheel, the London Eye. Look across the river {#blank#}7{#/blank#} you will see the Houses or of Parliament and the famous clock tower, Big Ben.

There are over 240 {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (museum) in the capital, but the two most popular are in South Kensington and cost nothing to get into. In the Natural History Museum, the keyword is Big. Next is the Science Museum. It {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (have) those great British inventions, the history of fight and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (explore) of space.

As a child I once read a story of two men who walked 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada with huge packs,  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}caught my eye, as L, too, dreamed of adventures in the wilderness. I've always remembered that story,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}never believed I would actually make it. It was too far out of my comfort zone.

But then, at the age of 42, I{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(hike) the 88 Temples Trail through Japan There, I experienced how attractive it could be to hike alone.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}impressed me most were the fantastic mountains, grand temples and generous local people.

When I shared my plan {#blank#}5{#/blank#}friends and colleagues, the news was welcomed with mixed{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(react). From some I got enthusiastic approval. But from others there were frowns and question marks. Half a year away from my family was{#blank#}7{#/blank#}challenge for me. Yet it wouldn't defeat me. After all, six months is{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(simple) a short period in a lifetime.{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(work) hard for 20 years in shiny office buildings, I felt the need for more adventure in my life. I hoped to slow down and look within, as well as explore the unfamiliar things. I understood that I needed them both.{#blank#}10{#/blank#}John Muir once said, "Keep close to nature… and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean."
