Last summer holiday, I took part in a teaching project and volunteered{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(teach) in a countryside primary school for two weeks.

    When we arrived at the school, though shocked by the poor living conditions, we quickly adapted {#blank#}2{#/blank#} to the life there. My good friend Tom and I were in charge of the third year students, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(consist) of just 18 boys and girls. We not only taught them English and maths, but also organized some after-school {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(activity) for them. Gradually, I found that many of the students were actually quite 6{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(talent). But some had to leave school early, which is{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(large) because their families were under heavy financial pressure, and they had to find a job to support the family.

    As well as giving lessons, we also helped set up a reading room in the school {#blank#}7{#/blank#} students hardly had any access{#blank#}8{#/blank#} good reading materials except textbooks. With the help of school staff and students, we cleaned out an abandoned classroom. When we placed the books students and teachers in my high school {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(donate) onto the shelves, I found the students were more than excited and {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(dive) into reading there.

    Two weeks quickly passed and we had to leave. I did not know how much we had actually taught them, but for me I learned a great deal—cherish what I possess and study harder.

    On May 28th, we observe World Hunger Day. It is an effort to focus attention on {#blank#}1{#/blank#}fact that despite there being enough food globally, some 21,000 people die every day from hunger.

    People do not go hungry because the world does not produce enough food for everyone. According to the world Hunger Education Service, recently the percentage of people {#blank#}2{#/blank#}cannot get enough food chronically（长期地）has reduced from 34% to 15%. The main problem is that many people in the world still do not have resources{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (purchase) or grow enough food.

    Indeed, hunger{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (be) a result of poverty, and also one of its causes. Hunger exists because many countries lack social safety nets; because in many countries women, although they do most of the farming, do not have as much access {#blank#}5{#/blank#} men to training or land.

    Over the past decade, a global push to reduce hunger and extreme poverty{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (mark) some significant successes, partly thanks{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the efforts of many international{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(organization). But on world Hunger Day, let us not forget that with over 815,000 people still{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (live) in daily food insecurity, we still have a long way to go before we can {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(safe) say that no child goes to bed hungry most nights.

    No trip would be complete without experiencing the local food culture. Actually, China has various kinds of delicious food, including a wide variety of local snacks.

    For most of the foreigners I contacted, and myself {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (include), Peking Duck, Mongolian Hot Pot are the favourite Chinese dishes. China is a place {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the food is not only delicious, but the {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(cheap) I've ever found.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} my last night in Beijing before {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (return) to the States, I went to a Peking Duck restaurant that had been suggested for me to try. What a beautiful place! Splendid woodblock prints on the walls, fresh flowers in the vases,  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(attract) silverware (银餐具) and beautiful chopsticks. I was handed {#blank#}7{#/blank#} menu and found most of the prices were especially low for the high quality of the food. The lucky came in whole or half, along with all the little decorations - a little tortilla (玉米粉圆饼) to put the sliced cluck and vegetables in, chopped onion and sauce.

    Anyway, I ordered a whole duck, thinking I'd just take the rest back to my hotel {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(eat) later if I couldn't finish it.{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(believable), in the end there was none of the whole duck {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(leave) on the plate.

    Cold Food Day, which honors Jiezitui, a hermit (隐士) who lived some 2600 years ago, used to be observed {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (wide), but today few Chinese observe it except on and around the mountain on {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the hermit lived.

    Jiezitui served {#blank#}3{#/blank#} an advisor to Chong'er, a prince in the state of Jin. A civil war forced the prince {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (leave) Jin and Jie Zitui followed him. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}, when Chong'er returned and became the ruler of Jin, his followers were rewarded with money, land and official jobs {#blank#}6{#/blank#} Jie Zitui was overlooked.

    So Jie Zitui chose the life of a hermit on Mt. Mian, where he took care of his elderly mother. Chong'er's men set fires on Mt. Mian to drive him out of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} mountain and then reward him. But Jie and his mother refused and were burned to death. Out of {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (sad), Chong'er declared Cold Food Day in honor of him. It {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (celebrate) for centuries in China until {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (replace) by the more popular Tomb Sweeping Festival, which begins the day after.
