    In the English Reading Week, one of my classmates recommended a quote to us, which goes like this: “Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you.”

    New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become "Neighborhood Angels (天使)".

    Several days later, my mother said, "Get ready, and we will go." "Where are we going?" I asked my mother. "I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.", she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, "I'll see you outside in the car." She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket.

    I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, "Is this for someone?", as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real "Neighborhood Angel".

    There was something in the elderly woman's grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures.

    It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part - time holiday - season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.

    The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.

    The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.

    Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.

    Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I'd used my impatience to make her life unhappy.

    As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

    We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she'd enjoyed when she was her daughter's age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

Baskin was a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of South Carolina whose parents ran small restaurant. As he was the only college student in his family, his family tried their best to support him. Baskin always worked as a waiter in the restaurant to lighten his parents' burdens. He was so hardworking that many customers praised his hospitable service. His parents also appreciated and trusted him a lot.

It was a busy night at the restaurant. After a few guests walked in and sat down, they ordered a bottle of the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse 2001-a valuable wine worth almost €6,000.

Having to serve another table, Baskin then asked a workmate to fetch the bottle. However, since the employee was new, she accidentally took the wrong bottle of wine. Instead of the wine that was ordered by the customers, she served the Chateau Pichon Longueville Pomerol 2001, which cost about €5,000. As the bottles and names were similar, no one noticed the mistake.

Baskin didn't realize the mistake until the customers wanted to order a second bottle after finishing the first one. He checked the order quickly and understood what was wrong. He cleverly suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened, which could give him time to think about how to solve the problem.

Everything seemed normal, but Baskin was lost in thought. "What should I do to solve this problem?" he asked himself. If he didn't tell the customers the mistake, he could keep the extra €1000 secretly. As he was also the cashier of the restaurant, no one would know what happened. €1000 was the tuition fee for the whole school year and his parents needn't work hard to earn money for him. Or he could use the money to buy his favorite laptop which his parents couldn't afford. This extra money was really a huge temptation to him. But in this way, he would lose his honesty and dignity.

It was a beautiful May morning. As usual, I started my day by sitting outside breathing the fresh air as I read my book and drank my coffee. Afterwards, there were two things I was determined to do. First, make sure my husband got our small Christmas trees down from the attic （阁楼） and, second, take several bags of clothes, blankets and comforters to the donation center. I had been faithful in doing that every year, but for whatever reason. I had delayed this year and the bags were now piling up and overflowing.

After reading for a while, I went into the bedroom to ask my husband to bring the trees down. He was asleep so I figured I'd surprise him and get them down by myself.

I went to the garage to access the attic storage and moved our tall metal ladder into place. I had to move the bags of clothing and blankets out of the way, determined once again to get those to the donation center.

I climbed the ladder, and two steps from the top I was able to reach up and push open the attic door. Then, with my feet on the very last step and part of my upper body in the attic. I saw my trees. I awkwardly raised my leg to climb onto the attic floor. Looking down. and then looking up again. I decided that this was actually too much for me. I should wait for my husband to get them.

As I stepped down, my foot missed the shaky ladder's step. With one foot swinging and the other on the top step, I grabbed （抓住） the attic floorboard and called my husband. Unfortunately, he couldn't hear me. As I went to take another step down, the ladder suddenly came out from under me, loudly crashing onto the concrete garage floor, leaving me hanging from the at tic with sweaty hands. In that second, which seemed like a century, I prayed and then called my husband.

Holding Mom's Hand

Technically speaking, my Mom is old－she is in her 70s now. She once used to be a woman full of life and laughter. All of that changed after my Dad passed away about ten years ago. Although they were not what you would call a "lovey dovey" couple, Mom did take his sudden death quite badly. To make matters worse, my brother decided to relocate to another city, while Mom decided to stay behind with her sister.

Whenever my Mom comes over to stay with me for some time (I live with my husband and his parents), she always demands constant attention from me. She generally gets nostalgic (怀旧的) of the good old times we used to spend together discussing pets, books, cooking, or life in general. Sometimes it turned into a complaining session－"You never spare time for me anymore" or "I have become useless to everyone". I always used to retort (反驳) with "Oh, Mom, please don't start all over again" or sometimes rudely remark, "How can you expect me to do the things we used to do together years ago? There is no time for such things anymore!" Mom would become silent, probably because she had resigned herself to the way things are now. I could sense I had hurt her but there was little I could do, or so I thought at the time.

Then it struck me－I always try to be nice to people at work. I do random acts of kindness for strangers. I sometimes surprise an old friend with a phone call. But what have I done for my Mom? Why is it that I am so reluctant to hold her hands in front of others? Is it because I am embarrassed to be labeled as "mama's girl" at my age? Well, I am no longer young myself. Is it because I have taken my Mom for granted because her days are done?

Today was yet another chaotic day. I was occupied in dealing with my own things, getting ready for work, leaving my Mom to have her breakfast all alone at the table. I had so many things on my mind－the deadline at work, an appointment with my dentist, what to cook for dinner...
