W: I love the subway.
M: I do, too. Look at that guy over there, he is sitting on two seats.
W: Yes. But if you ask for a seat, they usually will give one to you.
M: Yeah. They are like door keepers.
W: Yes, especially when there are a lot of people behind you but you just can't get through them and get on or get off quickly.
M: Oh, what's even worse is when you trying to get off the train and people who want to get on won't wait until you get off.
W: Oh, look! There is a woman holding a baby on the other end.
M: There are more kind and polite people anyway. I love the subway.
W: I feel warm and happy when I see people help each other.

One day, a teacher entered his classroom and gave his students a surprise test. He walked around the classroom and handed out the question papers with the text facing downwards.
Once he had given them all out, he asked his students to 1the page and begin. To everyone's2 , there were no questions, but just a black dot in the center of the3.
The teacher saw the 4 on everyone's face and said, "I want you to write what you 5there. You have three minutes to finish this." The confused students got started on the 6task. After three minutes, the teacher7all the answer papers and started reading each one of them. All of them, with no8, described the black dot and tried to explain where it was on the paper.
After each paper had been 9, the classroom was silent. The teacher began to 10.I am not going to grade you according to this. I just wanted to give you something to 11.No one wrote about the white part of the paper, Everyone12on the black dot, and the same thing13in our lives, we have a piece of white paper to enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots. Our14is a gift filled with love and care. We always have reasons to celebrate-friends that help us or jobs that support our lives. However, we keep focusing only on the dark spots-the health problems, the lack of money or the bad relationships with other people. The dark spots are really 15, but they are very small. Take your eyes away from the black spots in your life. Enjoy each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a positive life!"

Two years ago, I watched the film Everest, in which adventurers get stuck on the mountain during a snow storm. I immediately knew I had to start climbing. It's not the reaction most people have to that film; maybe I just needed more adventure in my life. But six months later, I climbed my first mountain, Mount Whitney, in California-North America's highest peak (顶峰).
In the summer of 2017, I decided to climb the highest peak in every European country. Growing up in Sweden, I was encouraged by my father to be outdoors all the time, but I wasn't a serious adventurer. I wanted to see if someone ordinary like me could climb mountains.
I didn't do any preparation for the first mountain in Europe, which was Mount Elbrus in Russia. It was exhausting, but I thought I would get fit climbing the rest, and I did.
Climbing mountains is an experience that is hard to put into words. You are in a beautiful environment and, when your each the top, you feel incredible (不可思议的). But you also have to climb down, which is when most accidents happen. I don't climb mountains that I am not ready for, but each one I climb takes me to the next step
I wanted to end the project at home, on Sweden's highest peak (2,097m) .It has two peaks: the north is rocky, and the south is icy. So alongside my camera assistant, I climbed both while wearing a superhero suit. It didn't feel as special as I'd hoped when I reached the top, but when I posted on Inst gram, people started congratulating me, I felt proud.
In total, I spent about €50,000 (378,240yuan), which is double what I had planned, but I eventually climbed 61 mountains in Europe.
You have to work on your weak sides while climbing. I don't like not being in control, but you can not control anything on a mountain. It's made me a better person. When you're on a mountain for hours alone with your thoughts, it's like meditation (冥想). It makes you so much stronger, physically, and mentally.
My goal now is always to have a mountain in my calendar. One day I will climb Mount Qomolangma (known as Everest by the West) when I'm ready for it.
Hardship comes in different shapes and sizes. Losing a job, illness, injuries or the death of a love done. But few things in life areas heartbreaking as feeling cutoff from the people we love. Recently, while "sheltering in place" against Covid-19, I've started reading to my grand kids with Face Time.
Mostly, I read to them because I love doing it. But I also do it for their parents' mental health. Besides having to stay indoors, they have to home school the kids, who can't go to school or to the park or play with their friends.
As am other, I didn't do everything right. Far from it. But when my three children were small, most nights before bed, I would read to them. There is something important-something comforting and healing-about reading to each other. Sometimes the words we read are so powerful that they will never be forgotten. But hearing them read is a different experience.
When we read to ourselves, we see the words with our eyes. But when someone reads to us, we just need to be still and listen. Sometimes, the voice and the love it conveys (传播) mean far more than the words.
Today, I read a tale book my kids loved long ago. Randy, 9 and Wiley, 7, thought it was funny. Elle, who's 5, usually prefers to read to me, but this time she just wanted to talk. Next, Randy played a song for us on his guitar, the very first song he has written. Finally, I Face Timed with Jonah, who is almost a year old. I read a little poem. He liked it so much that he gave me kisses over the phone, then we said goodbye. Now, more than ever, while keeping a safe distance, we all need to hold on to each other.
We all have a first name and a last name, or family name. But for many of us, it doesn't stop there. They mostly come from our real names.
Some of them are obvious (明显的): Tom is short for Thomas; Sam is short for Samuel. Take the name William as an example. It can be shortened to Will, and also Bill. During the Middle Ages, people liked to change letters to make names easier to pronounce. For example, a hard consonant (辅音) like Bis clearer than soft ones like W. Bill sounds much clearer than Will. Interestingly, the people of England even called King Wiliam III, who ruled in the 17th century, "King Billy".
Richard has also been a popular name in England for centuries. It was commonly shortened to Richand Rick to save time. So Rick became Dick. This nickname became so popular that it included in an idiom. "Every Tom, Dick and Harry" means everybody!
England has had eight king Henrys. Yet most of them preferred to be called Harry. It is a tradition that continues today. The British Prince Harry's real name is Henry. I wonder if Harry Potter's real name is Henry.
A. We also have nicknames. B. But how does Bill come from William? C. The most popular name for English kings has been Henry. D. Also, like the name William, people liked to make rhyming names. E. Yet there are some nicknames whose origins are more mysterious. |
Chinese delivery (快递) driver, Gao Zhi xiao, whose photo was put on the cover of Timemagazine in March because of his remarkable sense of commitment.
Ever since COVID-19 brokeout, many restaurants shutdown or only provided takeout services. Millions of peoplehave been staying home to avoid getting infected (感染的). "People choose to order food online or buy fruit andvegetables to cook at home," Gao told Time. As a result, delivery ordersdramatically (显著地) increased; placing a hugeburden (负担) on delivery couriers (派送员). Born into a poor family, Gao started to make a living in.Beijing at age 16. After the novel coronavirus broke out, Gao hesitated (犹豫) for a second to continue working, but then picked up ordersbecause he thought customers might be in need.
Because of the danger ofperson-to-person transmission, Gao must take precautions (预防措施) to avoid spreading viruses during his route around Beijing, including taking a regular health test and spending 20 minutes disinfecting (消毒) his motorcycle and clothes each morning. Besides deliveringgoods, Gao once warm-heartedly cooked for an elderly customer who was livingalone at her home. It is the commitment of ordinary people like Gao who havemade the biggest contributions in the fight against COVID-19.If there's a fire, just call 119.and you know that the firefighters will be there within minutes. If you happen to go out on the road, you'll come across police officers wavingtheir flags to direct the traffic. Similarly, in hospitals, from doctors to nurses, cleaners to security guards, these people still stick to their jobs, doing thesame servies as they ever did. The reason why they are still dedicated (有奉献精神的) is not a desire for compliments, but out of a willingness fortheir duty.
These people, who are orwere dedicating themselves to the job are heroes all the time.
